The Republican Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 03:32 PM) Is there some kind of ongoing budget battle? This could be a PR move to get more resources/officers. Oh I'm sure it's a cost cutting measure and the "we can devote more cops to 'future crime'" is the PR cover. It's just incredibly sad that the CPD is basically throwing up its hands and saying "yeah, we can't do anything for you anyway, so what's the point in talking to you face to face?"

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 03:29 PM) IIRC there was a case in California several years ago where the police took an inordinate amount of time to respond to a call, the woman was raped and I think killed, but there was no finding against the police department. maybe this is what I was thinking of? similar, but I think there's another one out there http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/28/politics...cotus.html?_r=0 pretty sure this is the one I was thinking of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_v._District_of_Columbia Wow. Not a special relationship? Who the hell do they work for?!?

I'd argue the difference here is that their decision to no longer respond to the calls AT ALL, as a matter of procedure, is willful, which gets you past the immunity protections the city has.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/02/04/chi...some-911-calls/ So the Chicago Police won't come help you if your s*** gets stolen and the robbers are gone. I can't wait until this stupid City gets sued after someone gets killed/raped/assaulted when they report a crime, the police fail to show up, and the robber/criminal sticks around knowing the police won't show up. What a stupid, idiotic decision. And you people want to take away a persons ability to protect themselves? And really, isn't this giving criminals free reign? There's no fear that the cops will show up now.

ok, perhaps i'm wrong. I didn't see it on any news coverage this morning on TV and it's not on cnn.com right now.

Something tells me that if a Republican administration (and a President with a last name rhyming with "push") concluded this, the media would have caved in on themselves. But Obama? Nothing to see here, move along. http://openchannel.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/...-americans?lite

Getting to be tax season, whatcha doing?
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 10:30 AM) $3 or $4k I think. It was worth it imo just to get the project done as quickly as possible. Ours was a full tear-out with updating the electrical and plumbing, removing a soffit and adding an island. As it was, we had to wait about 6 weeks without a kitchen while the counter tops were being made (they take final measurements after cabinets are installed to ensure an accurate fit, and then manufacturing is 4-5 weeks iirc). Compare that to the full bathroom gut-and-remodel I'm doing myself that I started in late October and still isn't finished... If you aren't getting new cabinets, that's a different story. You could leave your fully functional kitchen in place while they cut/fabricate your countertops and replace those in a weekend. Backsplash is really easy and we did that ourselves, 3-4 hours to tile, 1-2 hours to grout and clean the next day (Lowes and Hobo have good selection for that sort of stuff, HD and Menards suck and even the tile stores were limited for nice, not-$50-a-sq-ft glass tiles). Same with refinishing cabinets (did that for the bathroom). Yeah timing is a big factor. I'm on about 8 months for my basement remodel. Having a kid in the middle didn't help, but it's still taken a lot longer than I expected. My wife would not want to go 6 months with a half torn up kitchen (even if somewhat functional).

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 5, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) we used this place in darien (75th & lemont) and were very happy with the results: http://www.showcasekb.com/ i could pm you a before/after picture if you want How much of the total charge was for the labor? I'm debating whether to try and do the work myself. I'm not changing the footprint of the kitchen. I just need to replace a lot of the finishing details - countertop, backsplash, appliances, etc. I MIGHT get new cabinets, but I'm going to see how it looks if I just change out the doors instead to give it a new look.

The Wussification of America
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 04:17 PM) do tens of millions of people own firearms with magazines larger than 10 rounds? True. I guess i'm reading into the argument your guys' want of a handgun ban, or in Balta's case, an entire gun ban.

The Wussification of America
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 04:15 PM) Your sole example of a negative impact upon you was that it's more fun at the shooting range to have a large magazine. You're willing to trade the life of a single 9 year old girl for that? Yep! Freedom's cost a helluva lot more than one 9 year old girl.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 04:10 PM) Back in the day I was kind of a John Bender. I disagree with the current interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. And I believe that one day my interpretation will be correct. We arent arguing in front of the Supreme Court, this is just merely opinion. Well good for you, but what you think doesn't really mean much when we're talking gun control legislation that people want to enact today, under current law.

The Wussification of America
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 04:09 PM) Great. So if I can cite specific examples of people who'd be alive today if those had been banned, and no one can cite an actual situation other than "it's fun!" for why they should be legal, they should be banned? The arizona shooting spree is a great one. The shooter was stopped when he stopped to reload. That gave the people nearby their chance to go at him. The 9 year old girl was one of the last ones hit before he had to reload. Creating legislation that would negatively impact tens of millions of people for the sake of literally a single digit number of people is pretty much the definition of failing the strict scrutiny test.

The Wussification of America
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 03:36 PM) Just to note again...this entire topic came up because I asked if you'd had any situation where you used 10+ shots. First off, my scenario would be that when I go to the range I'd rather not change clips multiple times. So there's your scenario. Second, this is not OUR burden here, it's yours. Like it or not, guns are a constitutionally protected right, so you need to provide a pretty good reason, narrowly tailored, to curb that right. Your fear of being a victim of cross-fire in a fantasy world where every gun owner is a Rambo wannabe doesn't work.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is kids (I think you've said before you guys are close to starting a family). If your commute suddenly increased by an hour each way, that's less time with the little one. They go to bed early, so if you're stuck commuting home until 7 you don't get much time with him/her. Something to consider anyways.

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Feb 4, 2013 -> 09:25 AM) Is it absurd to not enjoy being lectured about bravery by a lawyer? I'm sorry, but to me, lawyers define gutlessness and cowardice. You and Balta have prejudices against gun owners, I have them against lawyers. So I told him what I thought about him talking about what makes a real man. Because that is something he knows nothing about. What's your beef with lawyers? I'm a lawyer. I'm a gun owner/user/supporter. Am I like, half a limp dick then?

2012-2013 NCAA Basketball thread
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 3, 2013 -> 04:42 PM) Thank god the NHL lockout ended, cause I'm done watching Illini b-ball for the year. Stopped watching about the same time last year and it did me well. Enjoy your bye on Thursday Hoosier fans. Yep, I have officially hit this point too. f*** this team, and I hope to god we didn't hire Tim Beckman 2.0 to run the basketball program. My favorite part of the game was when Joseph Bertrand had three straight drives (and 6 straight points), without much resistance from Wisconsin, to get a little momentum and get the game down to a couple of possessions. So what does Groce/Brandon Paul do on the next three possessions? Turnover by Paul dribbling the basketball, terrible three pointer by Paul within about 8 seconds of the shot clock, and then a turnover by Abrams for a travel (might have been within 4-5 possessions, I can't remember. But those three stood out). They never went back to Bertrand. It was like, hey guys, here's an obvious thing to do that's working. Let's not do it again, ok?The announcer even pointed it out. Just terrible.

Financial News
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Feb 1, 2013 -> 01:29 PM) Unemployment went up, GDP direction went negative again, something like 8.5 million people have just dropped out of the labor force since Obama's first term because they can't find a job, the economy has more new entrants in the work force than jobs created each month, and we are about to add another 13 million (11 million new citizens and about 2 million in additional guest worker visas) to the labor force. An usual recipe for an economic recovery from Obama. Feel better though, Obama ended his oh-so-successful jobs commission.

An armed guard at a school stopped a shooter. WE MUST BAN ALL WEAPONS. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/world/5574244...e-says.html.csp On that note, I was flipping through the channels the other night and stumbled upon Bill Maher and a panel discussing the gun control issue. I learned a new fact - the call for armed guards in schools isn't new, and actually was started by....a democrat! Bill Clinton.
