UNLV is pretty terrible. Illinois starting to make stupid decisions with the ball. You can tell they know they're the better, more talented team, which sets them up perfectly to let them back in the game and lose in the 2nd half.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 08:10 PM) I don't remember Deng being this consistent on his threes, or from 15+ feet for that matter. He's actually had a worse year than last year, which is amazing to me. Hit .466 last year on total fg's, versus .454 this year, and 386 versus .338 on 3's. About the same number of attempts. Maybe it's just the types of shots he hits and when he hits them. I was also surprised that he's only 25. Seems like he's been around for a while now. This team is gonna be fun to watch for a number of years. And the Scalabrine chants start. Man there's a ton of Bulls fans out there.

For as good as Rose has been this year, if Deng wasn't as consistent this year as he has been, this team is nowhere near as good. He's just deadly with the jump shot.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 11:15 PM) Pearl was definitely in the wrong regarding the Illinois situation. It was a low thing to do. But it was 20+ years ago. Let it go. It didn't affect the program like most Illinois fans claim it did. Illinois fans are pissed b/c they think the program would have been "Duke-esque" over the last 20 years if they hadn't gone on probation due to the NCAA investigation that stemmed from Pearl's allegations. Literally, I have been told by Illinois fans that you guys would have been as good as Duke if Pearl hadn't brought on the NCAA investigation. Well, guess what? If Illinois hadn't been cheating, they wouldn't have gotten in trouble. Pearl should not have brought light onto the program with the Deon Thomas accusations, but Illinois was still committing multiple NCAA violations and it's their fault for that. They deserved what they got. I do agree with you on one thing. Pearl should be suspended from coaching for at least a year (maybe two) for his violations. You need to read up on your history and ignore the extreme Illinois fans. The entire thing was fabricated by Pearl. No cheating was ever found. And it did screw Illinois for a number of years. I wouldn't claim they would be on equal footing as the Duke program, but they had a chance to make a lot of noise in the 90's but couldn't. They had to wait until the early 00's to make their run. The fact that he was ignored by all of D1 for 20 years should tell you something about him. He should be banned from ever coaching again. How you can employ someone who not only cheated, but lied about cheating, and then lied about lying about cheating? Why do you think they put tennessee as the 8-9 game? Does the NCAA really want to celebrate a cheater like that? Nope.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 04:10 PM) My point is this: everybody is sucking Hill's dick for the "amazing" editorial he wrote and is giving him credit for being a success. Doesn't Rose get credit for being a success coming from vastly more difficult circumstances? And Grant Hill comes across as a prick Duke elitist in that editorial too. I'm not sure why nobody is pointing that out. Does he make vaild points? Absolutely. Did he win every game he played in college against the fab 5? Of course. But he come across as an asshole in that piece. Indeed. Why? Because he articulated a good response? Does he come off as "too smart" for a black guy or something? I don't get it. I thought he could have taken more shots at Rose but he didn't. If someone called out me and my family, basically saying that I don't deserve praise for what I've done in my life (despite my clear success), I wouldn't have been as restrained as Hill was. And how is Rose being ignored here? He was the focal point of a documentary celebrating the Fab 5 what they did to the college basketball world (and basketball generally). I hate Duke and Duke alums, but I thought his response was not only well written but a necessary rebuttal.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 11:56 AM) Interesting choice of dates...because 20 years ago was 1991, perhaps the single greatest moment of Cable News...CNN's broadcasts from Baghdad. Maybe it started ok, but the problem is the various networks have become entertainment networks, not news networks. They're basically 24/7 now, which means they have a ton of time to fill, and they normally fill it by having worthless debate about worthless topics that are clearly geared towards their selective audiences.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 08:31 AM) I really liked this post. I was actually tempted to turn on CNN while eating breakfast this morning to see if the reactor had been evacuated (it was, temporarily during the night), but then I thought I was probably going to learn more coming to Soxtalk and turning on NPR on the way in. I was right. I've been saying for years that cable "news" has been one of the worst things to happen to the world in the last 15-20 years.

QUOTE (hitlesswonder @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 03:02 PM) I agree. I do not understand why anyone thinks Illinois is talented team anymore. They aren't. They have proven over the course of two seasons they aren't. I understand that on paper one could see a team with some tall seniors, a PG that put up a a bunch of assists and a couple of talented sophomores and think that they might do something. But that would be before the season started. At this point, we have lots of evidence that they are not a talented team. I think they'll play like they have all season, and lose to UNLV (they don't have the ball skills to handle the pressure). I can't really disagree with what you're saying, but if you watched that team all season you would have seen 20-25 minutes bursts where this team showed that it could beat anyone in the country. They played really well against Texas but lost in overtime. They beat a good Wisconsin team at home. They nearly upset Ohio State and Purdue after playing brilliantly in the first half of each game. The problem is they haven't had many complete games this year. I'd like to say that maybe there's a chance that they can turn it around, but really if that were the case they would have done so against Michigan. But they didn't. They yet again played a great first half and then pissed the game away. I could see them playing well against UNLV and losing, or playing well, winning, and then doing the same against Kansas. There's no doubt that the team has the talent to play with anyone. Unfortunately it's just talent to beat anyone in 20 minutes, not 40. What a way for these seniors to go out though. Beat Kruger and then Self. Even if they lost after that this season would be a huge success IMO. My goal for them in the beginning was the second weekend of the tournament. My homerism is going to hope that it happens (while realizing it won't).

Illinois enacts Internet sales tax law
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 04:41 PM) Yeah, until the world economy crashed, it wasn't as big of a concern that the existence of e-commerce allowed out-of-state companies to gain a competitive advantage by not having to collect sales taxes and by virtue of the fact that no one reports them or probably even know that they're supposed to. But now it is an issue and Illinois is looking to close pretty blatant tax evasion problems. I don't buy the competitive advantage argument. It's not a bad thing. Online businesses need those. Maybe not the amazons or ebays of the world, but the other "mom and pop" sites that can still provide goods that are otherwise unavailable. I'm tired of shopping at Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc. I much prefer to shop at localized sites (or sellers within online sites like amazon) that can provide different products at competitive prices. That's the only real competition these days to the big box stores. And the one advantage they had has been taken away. You like to preach about the rich getting richer at the expense of the poor. That's basically what's happening here with big box stores.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 08:40 AM) Most people don't? I didn't realize that. Pretty sure you could watch your team's games online though. However I do like that all games are televised and you can watch whatever you want. I know they do a good job flipping you around, but having complete control over that without having to buy the package is awesome. The option of watching it on my phone this year is going to be great.

Illinois enacts Internet sales tax law
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 04:34 PM) Illinois made a poor decision by inventing the internet and having pretty much everyone avoid paying the appropriate sales taxes? It's a tax that hasn't been an issue until now, when the state is seeking any and all available sources of money.

Illinois enacts Internet sales tax law
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 04:23 PM) Illinois should gut corporate taxes, gut environmental legislation, gut workplace safety rules and union rights and keep cutting public services (especially education!). Before long, we'll be right there, competing with the likes of Mississippi and Arkansas for the best businesses in the country! I don't think we're all that far ahead frankly, and we have a higher cost of living too.

Illinois enacts Internet sales tax law
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 04:17 PM) Anyway...All I'm trying to say is that you can justly criticize the IL government here, but if you're going to do that, I think Amazon deserves a similar amount of criticism. Both of them made choices that hurt Amazon's affiliates, but they did that because the current situation is not a good one for the state of IL. Does Amazon have any responsibility to those affiliates? Is that what you're arguing? Is this Obama's "the rich have the responsibility to help everyone else" line? I don't fault Amazon for making a business decision. I fault the state of Illinois for making a poor decision to try and cover past poor decisions.

TSA - Going too Far?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 03:10 PM) That's a different argument and one we had earlier in this thread. If the systems can't work properly, then I do have to switch sides on that part of the argument. But you don't get to bash the government for using things that are unsafe if the manufacturer and the initial tests said that they were safe. That's on the people who built the things. The distinction IMO is that the government justified the use of the machine, in part, on their safety. I think the government (TSA specifically) opened itself up to criticism for doing that.

TSA - Going too Far?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 03:04 PM) Following that logic, if the scanners were up to specs, then you'd have no problem requiring their use, right? Um, no. The logic is that the government shouldn't be requiring these things in the first place. Security theater has been my cry for a good long while now.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 02:53 PM) That'd be an awful model for a government to follow. Not surprising that you'd think that. Why should the government run a surplus (except minimally to pay down the country's debt)?

TSA - Going too Far?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 02:54 PM) There's zero case where you guys will accept the existence of any sort of corporate responsibility for anything. That's what I take from this case. In this case I have no problem pointing the finger at the private company as well. The problem, of course, is that the private company is merely providing the product, not requiring people to us it.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 02:41 PM) Yes. Government and private enterprise are different structures serving vastly different goals. Even a not-for-profit makes a poor comparison to government. I'd argue the not-for-profit model of not spending more than you have is one to follow.
