  1. QUOTE (spiderman @ Jul 15, 2010 -> 03:53 PM)
    Can the White Sox really afford to have 3 starting pitchers (Peavy, Buerhle and a guy like Haren) making 40%+ of the payroll?

    Buehrle is coming off the books after next year, and even if we did want to bring him back (odds are he'd probably sign with STL to end his career anyway), he isn't anywhere near a 14 million dollar investment per year anymore.

    So yeah, contract shouldn't/wouldn't be that big of a deal. The big deal is having the pieces to be able to get him, and we probably don't.

  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 04:59 PM)
    I honestly wish they would have picked Youk for selfish reasons.

    I'd rather have Paulie get the rest and I don't want him giving our juju to anyone else while he is there.

    I'm sure the few batting practice swings and MAYBE the 1 or 2 AB's he'll get during the game is gonna kill him.

  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 04:11 PM)
    This team really does have enough right handed pop though - Konerko, Rios, Quentin, and you can even consider guys like Jones, Ramirez, and possibly Beckham and Viciedo. They have no threat from the left side whatsoever, unless you consider Kotsay, Pierzynski, or Teahen threatening.

    Juan Pierre is one scary SOB from the left side of the plate. I mean, he is a threat to get an extra base hit and drive in a run at least once every 30 AB's or so.

  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 02:59 PM)
    Ortiz is actually have a pretty stellar year. 7th in the AL in OPS, and one of Boston's top two hitters, depending on how you want to value Beltre's 70 point advantage in batting average (while actually having an OBP worse than Ortiz's). David Ortiz is more than deserving of a roster spot.

    Batting .260~, doesn't play a real position, and PK and Youkilis both have better overall numbers. PK and Youkilis are both more deserving than Ortiz, and Swisher for that matter.

  5. McLouth isn't a poor defender. Never deserved the GG, but he can get the job done in CF but would be more than adequate in RF, a lot better than Quentin. Problem is, he's forgotten how to hit.

    Like you said though, if the Braves were just giving him away, I'd have no problem with bringing him and seeing if he can learn how to hit again.

  6. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 11, 2010 -> 10:45 AM)
    I want Paul in there now that Lerew is starting.

    I've never seen a manager give his best players so many days off. You'd almost think Rios and Konerko had some clause in their contract where they need to sit one game every week with the frequency Ozzie rests them.

  7. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 9, 2010 -> 04:35 PM)
    Smoak was an overpay, IMO. Perez or Scheppers would've constituted as a gang rape.

    I was Smoak's biggest fan coming out and I still like him, but he has some huge concerns to answer.

    1.) he can't hit the breaking ball at all. He can mash most fastballs, but that won't matter if he doesn't learn how to hit the breaking ball.

    2.) as fathom pointed out, Smoak is awful as a right handed hitter, so bad that the rangers would rather have Joaguin Arias play 1B for them vs. lefties.

    3.) for someone as good as Lee for a team that is making one of its greatest playoff pushes ever, first dibs on him in FA, and no matter what a guaranteed 2 draft picks... you give up someone with as many question marks as Smoak for him.

  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 02:11 PM)
    Well, I respectfully disagree.

    The guy has been one of the pillars of their franchise.

    They are not going to trade him for some crappy B-level prospect unless he himself asks to be traded to a contender and they accomodate him.

    No one is gonna get him for a s***ty C or B prospect. But they aren't going to get a Hudson, Flowers, or Viciedo for him from any team. No team is stupid enough to give that up for a rental player.

    And if that is the Astros asking price... well, you could see why they are one of the most f***ed organizations in baseball right now whose cornerstones on their team are past their prime and a weak farm system that isn't much better than ours.

  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 02:00 PM)
    Except for that people keep ignoring the fact that the Astros owner has said publicly he will eat more cash on trades in order to acquire better prospects.

    He has finally realized they have to pay the piper and get some good young talent in their system...

    Berkman is an expensive 34 year old 1B/DH who is having a down year and is a FA after this season, only has half of his contract left to pay for, and won't bring back any prospects because he'd make too much in Arbritation for a team to offer it to him.

    Berkman isn't going to cost a lot, no matter how much money the Astros pitch in.

    If the Astros pitch in money for someone, its obviously going to be Oswalt who has a much better chance at bringing in some quality prospects.

  10. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 01:44 PM)
    You know a DFA of Kotsay has zero percent of happening. I still think he's a valuable bench player. He's still a .335 career hitter when he doesn't start.

    I agree with you, but as long as Kotsay is on this roster, we all know Ozzie will misuse him.

  11. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 10, 2010 -> 01:41 PM)
    I expect to hear his name brought up more and more....any indications of what Houston might be looking at for him?

    Not sure, but if we could get him without giving up Hudson, Flowers, or Viciedo, at this point, he'd probably be a good option.

    He's been hitting the ball better lately, and being on a winning team could cause a resurgence for him. Also, he does everything Kotsay currently does for us, but better. And we aren't tied at the hip with him for long as he is a FA after the season.

    But then again, this is the Astros, and they always overvalue their players and ask for the world. That is why Roy Oswalt is still in Houston.

  12. QUOTE (TitoMB @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 06:41 PM)
    "BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK GGGAAAWWWWNNNN!"

    f***ing Chris Berman.

    At this point, Ive been able to blockout Chris Berman... it's the guys like who Joe Morgan who need to leave and stop talking out of their asses. They just talk to hear themselves talk.

  13. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 06:27 PM)
    I wasn't going to even if Paulie won.

    It was about 50-50 for me, but now its for sure, I don't give a f***.

    However, I will still watch the home run derby. I think I will tivo it so I don't have to listen to the god awful announcing they do every year.

  14. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 02:24 PM)
    That's not exactly saying much. There's 160 players in baseball with a higher wOBA than Kotsay.

    If for some reason we could get him for cheap, I'd have no problem with trading for Jones. However, I agree with you for the most part that he is nothing to write home about and give up anything worth a lot of value for.

  15. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 02:00 PM)
    The Sox want Dunn badly and that's the line from ESPN BBTN. Question is how much do the Nats want and are they really that willing to trade a big hitter like Dunn? If Dunn is a FA after this season then I think we should pass on him. Do we need more pitching now? Cliff Lee, who is also a free agent after this season or possibly Roy Ostwalt? Or do we keep our home grown talent Dn Hudson and see what we have. I do not like rapeing the farm system for one year rentals.

    What farm system?
