QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Apr 26, 2007 -> 11:01 AM) Erstad has three late-inning tieing or go-ahead RBI's in less than a week. Anderson might not have that in a single year. Cool. He found a hole. Still sucks at baseball.

QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Apr 26, 2007 -> 09:23 AM) Umm...I'm sure with a runner on 3rd with less than two outs or a runner on 2nd with no outs, I would rather have the ball put in play. Striking out once every four at-bats puts ZERO pressure on the defense. If a guy has ZERO power, ZERO discipline, and ZERO line drive ability then you have to reexamine why he's playing. His ability to "put pressure on the defense" with groundouts to the right side is not an adequate reason. Anderson is not perfect, but he could provide the things Erstad doesn't excel at (if he develops like he has in the minors).
-
Striking out is the same as grounding out. Outs=bad---whether or not you ground out a lot or strike out a lot the end result is the same.
-
Anderson could develop that kind of power with adequate playing time.

QUOTE(Middle Buffalo @ Apr 23, 2007 -> 12:06 PM) To be fair to Maxim, Hawk and Santo were ranked by height. Way to stay classy. Hope you don't ever have to go through half the s*** Santo has. f*** off.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 25, 2007 -> 11:00 AM) There's at least one hall-of-famer on that list! You must have missed Jack Wilson and Hiram Bocachica QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 25, 2007 -> 11:02 AM) Is OPS really a great indicator of how valuable a lead off hitter is? How important is slugging PCT when your job is to just get on base and slap hits? A majority of his career has been batting lead off. He has done that to a tune of a .299 avg .354 OBP and .809 OPS (for Craig). I would say thats a pretty good line. Your ability to slug is always important. It doesn't matter what position you bat in the order, the objective is to avoid making outs. If you aren't great at getting on base, you better slug. Also, "slapping hits" is no one's job. I'd say those numbers are incredibly inflated by 2000 and are a horrible indicator of what he can or can't do these days.
-
Here are players with similar or worse OPS from 2001-2006 than Darin Erstad. http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/shareit/aRXn
-
Yes, I know his numbers leading off. They're better than his numbers hitting second, but does it really matter whether he's hitting first or second? No. OVERALL, his OBP is .278. Whether or not that comes from the first position or the second position is irrelevant. He hasn't been as amazing as people are acting. And are people really faulting BA for slipping in that pond in CF last night?

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 25, 2007 -> 10:30 AM) Brian Anderson is not better than him. Erstad has shown he is better defensively, and is producing as a lead off man. False. Whether or not he's produced leading off is irrelevant. Whether he's hitting 1st or 2nd, he's still in front of the 3-4-5 and needs to GET ON BASE, which he hasn't been doing.
-
Batting average is absolutely useless. OPS+ of 78, 88, 75, 95, 89, and 60. That's not very good, in fact it's pretty terrible for a guy that is playing every day in MLB. Is Joe Cowley insane? What has been stellar about Erstad and his .292 SLG?
-
Wrong. He has a six year track record of being pretty god damn terrible at hitting. I could f***ing care less what he did during the Clinton administration.
-
CREDE HAS A HISTORY OF SUCCESS AND DOES NOT HAVE A YOUNG GUY ROTTING ON THE BENCH WHO IS BETTER THAN HIM. Caulfield, stop comparing good baseball players to Erstad. It is not the same thing. Erstad is a whole other beast just because of the situation.
-
How about how he hits in the two hole? Leadoff or second he is still in front of the big guys and needs to get the f***ing job done. And Caulfield, please tell me what makes Ozzie so infallible. If Ozzie wants Erstad to leadoff, it is NOT fine for me. You don't put a terrible hitter in position to get the most AB.
-
The difference between Paulie and Erstad is immeasurable. It's like comparing apples and some fruit no one's ever heard of. I still want to DFA him, good game tonight or not. A sub .600 OPS is horrible, especially for a guy who gets so many AB.
-
Erstad is still terrible on the season. Nice to see him play well, but Anderson needs AB right now and he needs them in CF. Erstad sorely needs to not get 600 PA so we're not paying six million for a lot of grindouts. And Caulfield, this is not little league. We do not need to "set an example" for other players. Also, wasting outs early in games is f***ing stupid. Save that bulls***, overmanaging, "fundamentally sound" baseball for late innings. Doing it early will kill a team, especially ours. We're built for the longball, so we need guys who can actually get on base, not guys who grindout to the right side.
-
This one game has shown me that Erstad is s***. Thank God there's Erstad who has obviously performed better with the same opportunity.
-
Erstad would have at least hit that to the right side! f*** Why isn't he playing, by the way? Just got in.
-
Erstad would be the worst corner OF in the history of the game.
-
Thanks for the reply Addison. Your only response to any of this has been that Ozzie is the manager so he is infallible. Contrary to popular belief, he sucks ass.
-
He's so f***ing terrible. Why on earth isn't BA given a consistent opportunity when he beat the s*** out of Erstad in spring training, Addison? Explain this to me. Also, I'm fairly sure I could outmanage Oswaldo---but next time there's a managerial search that considers anyone who isn't a "baseball guy" (i.e. former player who doesn't know s***), let me know.
-
Are you really that dense Caulfield? I'm sorry if I'm not impressed with Erstad's ability to hustle. BA hustled out a groundball today too, should he get some more pt cause of that? If Pods and Erstad rub off on the rest of the order I'll jump off a f***ing bridge. f*** this manager, and f*** KW for not having the balls to show Ozzie some stats.
-
Anyone else concerned that Erstad will get 600 plate appearances and his option will vest for next season?

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Apr 20, 2007 -> 04:44 PM) TQ, check your inbox in the next couple of days; I have some updates. Spot on per usual, Ribbie. That about sums this discussion up, even with the World Series sentiments aside. He's putting the worst hitter in all of baseball in the position to get the most AB.
