  1. QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 1, 2005 -> 09:42 AM) Just figure 3% of your current home value + .05, escrow that and you should be fine. A little higher in Texas. We have no state income tax, so our property taxes are slightly higher than some other states.
  2. Thanks for the link. Interesting article.
  3. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Nov 1, 2005 -> 09:17 AM) Yea, Tex, I about pooped my pants when I got the SCHOOL portion of my tax bill. I need to come up with some serious cash before January, or my payments on my house are about to go up 50%. Property taxes are the cruelest tax. With income tax, when you make more, you pay more. Property taxes are tied to your home value. So being property rich and income poor becomes a disastrous combination.
  4. Texas created Regional resource centers to share high dollar resources. This has been a boom to smaller, poorer school districts. It is also a step towards eliminating the worse aspect of school financing, using property taxes. This assures the poor receive less resources than the rich. Not equal.
  5. The usual suspects. I am wondering if at some point Frank gets bumped to DH.

    thanks for posting the link.
  7. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 10:51 PM) I've always wanted to know this but if your Paul Konerko what the hell is the difference between 48 and 50 million dollars? Perhaps the difference between being the 5th highest paid first baseman and the 9th highest paid first baseman. Hang around enough pro athletes and to a man they know how they rank by salary. Same as most people. What is the difference between $45,000 and $47,000? If the guy in the next cubicle, doing the same job as you, only not as well, is making more, most people are pissed and want a raise to at least match. Don't you think a competitive athlete wants to be the highest paid at his position? Y2HH, the deferred money becomes a problem once you factor in inflation, interest, and investments. If I gave you $2,000 in 1975, you could go out and buy yourself a nice new car. If I gave you that same $2,000 in 2000, you could make a down payment.
  8. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 28, 2005 -> 02:53 PM) Here's the thing - first of all, the leftists have been creaming their pants for this. They have wanted something to stain the Bush White House since about, oh, January, 2001. Kap that's pure hyperbole The left doesn't want bad to befall America any more than the right. Both sides want honest government without scandal. And SS, comparing getting a blow job in the WS to this pales in comparison. Look at the root events. Was America harmed when Monica serviced the first member? Was America harmed with the leak? When Americans defend bad government because it is *our* side, we have entered partisan politics and moved ourselves one step closer to a really bad, corrupt, government. In a perfect world, it would be the Dems that lead the charge at Clinton, and the GOPers the most pissed at this. I see the same thing with parents. When I was growing up parents would be pissed when kids misbehaved. "You are embarrassing me as your mom". Now they defend the bad behavior and blame someone else. If the citizens would rise up and clean up their own parties first, we'd all be better off. We need the Hammer in '08
  9. More linked here for you reading pleasure. A couple key quotes IMHO Nasty downward cycle. The lack of development increases your property value. You have to sell to a developer to pay your taxes, and the very views that raised your values, gets worse.
  10. Basically Rush and Hannity said the same thing as FlaSoxxJim. GOPers got their marching orders, go git 'em, get galvanized

    QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 10:14 PM) 2.35-2.45 in pa (depending on proximity to city) Isn't that also your GPA?
  13. When Jas photo*chopped* a Rally Crede and within a couple hours, 50 people had a Rally Crede avatar, then the real Crede hits a walkoff that night . . . Scary and funny.
  14. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 11:03 PM) I don't think there is such thing as "clean" program on that level. Coach Carr just hasn't got caught yet. By saying on that level, do you mean Div 1, or do you mean a competitive top 50 type program? I think there are some very squeaky clean Div 1 programs, but as you move up higher and higher in the polls, you find teams and programs that get closer and closer to the "line". Once you are walking the tightrope, you will sometimes fall over the line. What gets interesting isn't in the rules violations, and such stuff, but in the quality of the individuals you are recruiting. Everyone wants the academic all-American with a 3.5 gpa and a huge SAT score who brings the homeless dinner. Those are tough to win with everyone going after them. How far down the character slide to you want to go. That is where the DUI, date rape, thug mentality comes into a program. Desperate coaches, wanting to keep their $400,000 and up gigs, start to cut corners. It isn't really breaking any NCAA rules, but it does lead to an embarrassing program when the players are featured on the back page and the front page of the local newspaper. BTW, the above comments do not apply to the Texas Longhorn program that always gets the finest student athletes who would never embarrass the University.

    QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 10:30 PM) I dont' know about funny...but right now I'm confused as all Hell. From the Ripley's Believe it or Not file . . . PA was one of the funniest guys around here as voted by soxtalk members. That's when he was in Texas. Penn seems to have taken his humor sometimes.
  17. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 06:22 PM) This should be an automatic ban. Agreed. I'm an idiot.

  19. I sat directly across from the Crawford boxes at a game this year. TV does not do justice to how far that ball would have gone if the walls didn't get in the way. I remember being at Comisky for one of Kittle's roof shots. It is so awesome to see baseballs crushed like that. I think Luzinski may have also hit one that game. But it was Kittle's that I remember the most.
  20. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 29, 2005 -> 06:42 PM) Where did this Iowa State team come from. Crushed Texas A&M at home. Oh, and #100 Oklahoma State 28, #2 Texas 9 ' Scary moment for UT fans. How is this stat? UT has outscored Oklahoma State 118-0 in the second half, these past three seasons.

  23. QUOTE(JHBowden @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 10:50 AM) cerbaho-- The problem with increasing the existing wage floor is that it will put people out of work. That's life, no matter how much love and good intentions one has for low-wage earners. You are assuming that corporations currently have, on their payrolls, people whose job is not essential. People who can be laid off if their pay is increased $40 per week. Not in any companies I have worked for in the past 20 years. Lean is the mode of business. What will happen is middle earners will be squeezed. The top execs will get their piece of the pie but the level or two above minimum will stagnate until the effects of the minimum wage is absorbed. The above was not based on college economic courses, just based on years as a business owner, corporate salaryman, and middle manager.

    QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 03:27 PM) And mainstream Christians speak out against those wackos, even prosecute them. By Christians, do you mean the American people, government, etc? Wouldn't that be everyone, including Athiests, Jews, Muslims, Agnostics, etc.? Who is speaking for all the mainstream Christians? The Vatican? Salt Lake City? You and I? I agree that there are some evil people in this world. I think they come in all stripes, colors, credes, and religions. I would also agree that not all wars are fought by nations, some are fought for a belief system. I'm not so certain I would condemn an entire religion of millions of people on the works of far less than 1%. I further have a hard time believing every ball player that thanks God for a homerun is motivated by his religion or every murderer who praises Allah or God is motivated by his religion. Just evoking the name isn't enough for me.
