  1. I was reading a NY Times article that quoted one of the rioters who said it's what Cruz would want so it's OK. How are these "patriots" going to react when Trump and Cruz can't protect them from prosecution? Which leads to if Trump is planning a pardon dump he's got about 24 hours to do it.

    Student Loan Debt

Where else could an 18 year old kid get a $100,000 loan at single digit interest? That's kind of the balance, make the loans riskier for lenders and the people who do pay will be punished with higher overall interest rates. If there was an easy fix, we'd have done it. I believe there first, tiny step, is offering 15 years of education instead of the current 13. Free associate's degree at community colleges or approved trade/ apprentice/ certificate programs. Each person after graduating from high school receives a $5,000 per year credit to use for job training or college. Use it or lose it might be easier to pass or better is offer a lifetime $10,000 stipend. That way if someone doesn't use it but shifts mid career, it's still there. I'm still not certain about allowing the $5,000 to be applied to a private or elite public university. I'd liked to see them have to accept the $5,000 as full tuition for anyone with less than 60 credit hours.
  3. That's one of the biggest points I try to make in immigration conversations. Why are we more worried about minimum wage workers from Central and South America and not notice the high dollar jobs also being taken?
  4. @WhiteSoxFan1993 some of what you're asking for can be tied into loan forgiveness. I received for example $5,000 for teaching 5 years at a Title 1 school. I believe that program could be improved by offering $1,000 a year beginning the second year and bumping it up regularly so that experienced teachers who remain at those schools would be rewarded. You could tie loan forgiveness with volunteering in adult education programs or other programs.

    Student Loan Debt

I think it does for a lot of people. But tell me this, using the $10,000 number, what changes would you have made? $1,250 per semester doesn't really change schools too much.

    Student Loan Debt

I keep thinking of a hierarchy of fairness that starts with a BA from a state school near your home and ends with a PhD from a private school. I still have some, it's the last of any debt I have. If they forgave $10,000 I would probably buy a new vehicle sooner rather than later. I've been hanging onto some cash waiting to see what happens.

    Student Loan Debt

It seems like I can remember almost everyone here at college at some point.
  8. Yet schools should be teaching cursive and how to do your taxes if you follow Facebook posts. Preparing young people for careers that haven't been invented yet is an interesting dilemma.
  9. It's all that fast food. A bunch of guys eating sliders will strip wallpaper
  10. Thinking about the next four years is there anything that a Biden administration could do that would impact you directly? Stopping the border wall for example is something I believe is right, it really doesn't directly impact me. For you personally, what are you hoping for? That $10,000 or more student loan relief would be really nice. Other than that, it's indirect stuff that I believe will make America better, which makes my life better.
  11. Long story short, when it is your job to enforce Covid safety rules life can get interesting really fast. Fortunately I've worked with most of the coaches involved today for eight years and (believe it or not) I'm regarded as the easy going, easy to work with coach. I'll just say other team's parents can be a problem, especially when there is a rookie coach who needs to find a spine.
  12. San Antonio is using the Alamo Dome for vaccinations.
  13. I believe the best course of action is regular evaluation and change. We're very strict with masks, cleaning, hand sanitizing
  14. So far we have not seen a spread inside any of our schools. We did have a group of science teachers that went to lunch together on a staff development day and all eight tested positive a week later. We are a large district with over 100,000 students utilizing a hybrid schedule and most students have elected virtual learning.
  15. I'm interested in what y'all think. Perhaps the premise is faulty, but assume we have the flexibility to make one or two more roster moves. Do you think making that move now with the perceived need or in season when the need is known is better? I'm not unhappy with going into the season with this lineup and some room to address a need. The downside is those in season trades from the haves to the have nots is costlier.
  16. The superintendent for our school district just sent out an appeal for parents to keep their kids home for the next two weeks are we are experiencing another surge. He was really clear that we are open for students and if your child needs to be at school we're open and here, but if they can be successful at home, keep them home.
  17. And anyone that is in a situation with multiple specialists may receive conflicting advice from their doctors. My cardiologist told me fight to be first. My oncologist was much more cautious.
  18. Exactly. And to be fair, they are the general public and probably among the last to get it anyway. I'm in a situation with an underlying medical condition where they know the vaccine will not be as effective for me as others. Plus, there is also a slightly heightened risk of an adverse reaction. Do I elbow my way to the front as a teacher and in theory get the vaccine instead of someone who we know it was have greater efficiency.
  19. I'm certain there is overlap but I understand people not buying a 2021 F150 because it's the first model year and I understand people being cautious about what they inject into their bodies. I'm not waiting but I know a couple people who are planning on waiting a couple months before getting the vaccine. Young, healthy, isolated work from home lifestyle living in a rural area and it doesn't seem totally crazy. It blows my mind that doctors and nurses are refusing. Which then circles back to my friends deciding to wait.
  20. Let's hope he gets plenty of opportunities this year. I'm ok with starting the season with this roster, but it's going to be cheaper now to address the other needs now rather than at the deadline.
  21. So basically you are a threat to America as it currently exists.
  22. Should Twitter be allowed to facilitate these illegal acts?
  23. I can't speak from personal experience with GOP candidates but I can from multiple democratic campaign dating back to 1977. If we are speaking about political campaigns to get elected, the nature of the industry takes hold and I don't believe either party has a moral high ground to stand on. I've been involved in exactly one candidate's campaign I believed was 100% honest and would rather lose than violate any ethics. The rest justify their actions by the other guy does it. It's a nasty, dirty, process to get elected and I don't envy anyone that enters the arena. And the more local the race, the more entrenched a party is, the uglier it gets. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I never worked in Chicago but the Rio Grande Valley in Texas is 90% or more Democrat. Primaries involved some of the dirtiest, rule breaking, shit you would ever believe. I believe there are good, decent, humans with D and R next to their names. I think socialism is a bad path for America but I don't think you're a bad person or unethical for believing those principals. Likewise a prolific poster here identified as a Republican a few years back. If I lived in his town when he was running for school board I would have knocked on a lot of doors to see him elected. I would have donated to his campaign but he didn't accept outside money. We shared a vision of America, we just disagreed on the path to get there. Much like your vision of Socialism gets us to an America where I'm certain we both would be happy. I believe in freedom of some speech, but not actions. I believe in freedom of thought, but not actions.
  24. And as always in America the rich will skate on by and the poor idiots on the floor of the capital will pay. It pisses me off.
  25. Before this spins out of control, are you suggesting that democrats never break any rules? That for example the Chicago Political Machine is totally clean and by the rules?
