QUOTE (southside hitman @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 12:42 PM) Suck it Beane! *Rick Hahn laughs maniacally* Now Elmore is going to hit .330/.400/.600 with 40 jacks and Beane will laugh at Hahn.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 11:31 AM) Isn't Trey Michalczewski a legitimate prospect? Guess it depends on what you mean. He's extremely talented and could develop into a really good ball player down the road, but he's 19 years old (today...happy birthday Trey) and struggled in Bristol last year. They may start him to Kanny depending on how he looks this spring, but there's no need to rush guys.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 11:31 AM) He certainly can't be up for best actor for his portrayal of a major league baseball player. I don't know, he's done a hell of a Cerrano impression swinging at curve balls.

As flavum noted with his edit, there's no PTBNL, it's just cash considerations.

The Sox were going to be getting Scott Williamson from the Red Sox as well. This thread is amazing in retrospect http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13181

QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 10:42 AM) What is that and where can I find it? FanGraphs has it, it's just a little bit lower. Here's a brief write-up on it with more detailed explanations (including the math behind it) down below. http://www.fangraphs.com/library/pitching/siera/3 I'll link Sale's page because he's awesome: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playe...&position=P SIERA is listed under the heading batted ball, but it's actually separate from the batted ball statistics. It's listed alongside tERA (which also takes into account batted balls, but does not appear to be anywhere nearly as accurate), xFIP-, and xFIP.

2014-2015 NFL Football thread

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 10:14 AM) Agreed. And I think it's unfortunate, in a way, because you know that some people will make this into a sexuality issue rather than a talent issue. I still think he can have a spot on a NFL team, but he's not even a mid-round pick at this point. If he can increase his bench and speed by his pro day while looking better as an edge, stand up rusher, he might have a chance to go in round 4-6, but that's not a lot of time to increase a lot of bench reps. -
Actually, maybe we should be paying more attention to SIERA, as it does actually take into accounts balls in play to try and determine talent level.

QUOTE (Boogua @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 09:36 AM) I'm starting to wonder where Sam goes in the draft, if he even gets drafted. He had an awful combine. He needs to improve his numbers quite a bit during his pro day or he might be looked at as an undrafted FA special teams type guy. With how poor the combine was and his lack of experience as a stand up pass rusher, I'd put him in the 7th/UDFA right now. -
QUOTE (KG#1 @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 07:38 AM) Not sure if this was posted elsewhere, but thought it was funny... I did not know that the White Sox have a pitcher named John Dank. That's still awesome.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 08:47 PM) Claiming ex-Royals? A few posters will be very happy! On the one hand: "Why do we keep bringing Royals onto the team, they suck!" On the other: "We should bring in this guy from the Royals."

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 08:31 AM) Ha. You sound so Hawk in this post. I love it. I tell hyuh what, Stone Pony. That there Adam Eaton is one hellofa spark plug at the top of the order. Except Hawk likes to talk about getting the runner over, and f*** that. Hitting behind the runner and bunting and all that BS. Just get on base.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 08:22 PM) I have no doubt that std dev will be high as the variability is high in many of the factors. I would love to see an r2 of at least 60 but I'm not confident. I'd be surprised to even see 40. I ran a very basic regression looking at runs scored for teams over like a 2 year period of time just to see which numbers correlated more heavily with it, but it was very poorly done. My conclusions at the time were that stolen bases and batting average showed nothing conclusive at all about runs scored, while OBP was the most highly correlated at around 37-40%, something like that. Still not a significant figure, which tells you that it's more than just getting on base because so much of baseball is contextually based and luck plays such a large factor, but being that high tells you it's the most important aspect of scoring runs at the very least.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 08:24 AM) Only because it receives more at-bats on the season than the 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 spots in the lineup. Beyond that, I am of the mind that almost every at-bat is in a vacuum. Yes, Hawk Harrelson got into a lot of Sox fans' minds with the Tadahito Iguchi swoonfest in 2005, but the only reason the 2 spot is more important than any behind it is simply because there's more at-bats to be had. That's part of it, but it's also a spot that meshes together the sparkplug at the top of the order that you want to get on base pretty much at all costs and the big hitters of the middle of the lineup who you want to drive in the runs. So, ideally, you want a guy that does a bit of both, and Garcia is definitely capable of that.

The Sox had an agreement lined up with Juan Gonzalez to play RF had the Magglio trade gone through. That's a guy that I don't think even Herm Schneider could have kept healthy due to the ravages that steroids took on his body. He was signed by KC, barely played, and was only moderately effective. I then recall seeing his one and only AB in 2005 against Minnesota. He hit a weak ground ball and was immediately in pain, as, if I recall correctly, his hamstring tore itself clean off the bone.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 27, 2014 -> 07:42 AM) Two hole gets tons more run producing opportunities than people think. It's arguably more important than the 3 hole in terms of raw ABs with runners in scoring position. The problem is, of course, that we need OBP at the top, and Avi is a hacker. I really really really hope he learns to recognize balls and strikes, because those little pop ups aren;t going to keep falling for singles forever. I'd like to see the overall numbers on that, just to see which is which. The 2 hole is one of the most important spots in the lineup, and I know you wouldn't disagree with that, but you also want to see a guy who can draw a walk there. I think Garcia hitting there might be the best of a bad situation, but he would ideally hit about 6th. I really hope Semien can be at least a .260/.340/.410 kind of player at the big league level because that would slot in really well at the 2 hole.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) Don't want PED users on this team. Keep Cervelli as far away as possible. I didn't think Pablo Ozuna was such a bad guy. It would also mean getting rid of Flowers, but I don't think many would mind that. I just don't care for Cervelli because he's not that good.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) Fangraphs is a great sortable resource. I think I found all the data I need to start. Thanks for showing it. I'll run a few models and post the results. I'm incredibly interested in seeing the R-squared and standard deviation of these results.

Hey it actually worked with Dakota and Carolina!

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 03:56 PM) Correct! Those are Chris Sale's numbers as a starter, his RP numbers removed. That's what makes that line incredible -- it's WAY easier to pitch well one inning at a time. Well, then it's worth pointing out just his 2013 too 9.49 K/9 1.93 BB/9 46.6% GB% That is a K/BB of almost 5. The only problem thus far has been that his flyballs have a tendency to leave the yard a bit more often than others.

Who is Your Favorite Sox Player Playing for Other Team?

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Feb 25, 2014 -> 09:39 PM) Nick Swisher?!?!?!?!?!?! And Cabrera?!?!?!?!?!?! I ought to report this post LOL, just being a clown. Those guys suck -
I'm always hopeful for something nice, but how do we know it's not for a bag of balls?
-
For others, if you want to mess around, this is all of the numbers, sorted by K/9 with BB/9 and GB% right next to them. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...&sort=9%2cd And one of my favorite pitchers ever is #2 on that list. I'm hoping Billy Wagner gets elected, but I think people forget how truly dominant he really was.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 02:30 PM) Also, guess who this is: 9.26 K/9 2.13 BB/9 45.7% GB I can't find numbers that match that exactly, but it's incredibly similar to Sale's career numbers. I'm honestly not sure Sox fans appreciate just how talented Chris Sale is. If he stays healthy - and I can't knock on enough wood - he should end up with multiple Cy Youngs.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 02:30 PM) Also, guess who this is: 9.26 K/9 2.13 BB/9 45.7% GB I saw a few of them, but I initially just looked at the 2000s. My initial guess is Joe Nathan. EDIT: Nope, way too many flyballs for that ground ball, but it wasn't a bad guess.
