  1. I'm sure his agent will try any team to get Fred a chance to hit his HR's. But the Sox won't and don't need him.
  2. Sporadic to me means having horrible years for seemingly no reason [no injuries] interspersed with great years, and huge fluctuations in production from year to year. Everett should be like his career avgs of .277, .349 OBP, and .475 SLG. An improvement over what the Sox can put in the DH spot once MAggs goes back to RF. If healthy [playing everyday in LF on his ankle for over a month now], Everett should be a good fit for what the Sox need [LH power, decent OBP, good in the clubhouse]. I don't think Carl's the last bat the Sox should get. [Catalanotto is what the Sox need to get on base for the middle of the order guys] But seeing there are not many other names or options out there, Everett should be OK.
  3. Everett could be called many things but sporadic?! He's more consistent than anything else Maybe Sox fans who think he'll be the savior will be disappointed. But nobody is that delusional around here. Bottom line--he should help. The other guys need to step up more, particularly the #1 and #2 hitters. Everett should be decent enough
  4. Everett has been off the DL for over a month now. He should be coming around. He's been playing LF everyday for a month. At DH, he should be able to rest his ankle and just hit for the Sox. One thing overlooked is how Everett would feel coming back to the Sox. Think how he would feel coming back knowing he's wanted by the Sox organization, where throughout his entire career not much loyalty has been shown him. He knows the Sox want him and think highly of him. He would have to happy with a trade back to the Sox. [He knew the Sox weren't going to bring him back because they would have had to pay him near what he was making in 2003] By all accounts he's a winner and should fit right in with Ozzie's way of thinking. BTW-Carl hit for a .301 avg, a .377 OBP, and a .473 SLG playing all OF for the Sox. With less wear and tear on him playing DH, anything close to what he did last year would help replace some of what Frank was giving the Sox.
  5. Every move is a risk. Yet Everett has proved he's capable of hitting .280+, with LH power, and an above avg. OBP over the years. He's less risky than hoping Gload finds his groove, above what he's done so far [which has been OK, but not enough to be the fulltime DH now] BTW- isn't Carl hitting .250+ now?
  6. The Sox need other players to pick up their games as well, like when Maggs went down. Everett isn't or should be expected to be the savior. But he would improve the club without dramatically altering the clubhouse [such as trading a position player or replacing someone in the everyday lineup]. Ross Gload would probably be sent to AAA. Everett > Gload.
  7. Everett at DH [not in hte OF] will almost certainly be better than Ross Gload. He has the numbers over the course of his career to prove it. Almost all MLB GM's would rather have Everett over Gload. Most pitchers would rather face Gload than Everett. His LH power would be welcome, even if Frank comes back. Carl might not be a cure all but he would improve the Sox. One thing I liked about Carl last year was how he made pitchers work each AB, ala Frank Thomas, fouling off pitches, etc. Most Sox hitters don't work the count, and make the SP's throw a lot of pitches. Carl would improve the Sox in this area.
  8. Everett could help right away at DH. He posts a solid OBP, provides power from the LH side, is a good situational hitter and works hard. This years' numbers aren't indicative of what he can do. With all the time off, he has needed these AB's to get into hitting shape. Is he the best guy out there? No. But he's a good fit, even if he's signed for 2005. Frank's bat cannot be replaced by one guy. It must be a team effort. Getting Everett isn't the end. Another bat at the top should be had. Ross Gload [who Everett should replace] has been decent. but Everett is better than him. Everett should be had for a mid level prospect [someone like Josh Stewart]. More moves still can be made. While I'd like Frank Catalanotto [he could be available, and would be perfect for the bench going into the 2nd half], he might be a few weeks away from being ready after being on the DL.
  9. with the type of foot injury Frank has, he shouldn't be hobbling around the dugout. He needs to be off his foot as much as possible. His injury is different than Jose's and Maggs'. They could walk around a little and not aggravate their injuries. Frank can't. With his weight, the more he's on his feet the more time he could be lost for. Jose should have kept this private [unless he has his medical degree and knows a 275 lb man walking around on a broken foot is OK]. End of story
  10. Another interesting name is Frank Catalanatto from Tor. He should be back from the DL soon for a hamstring injury. But he absolutely kills RHP [a .360+ avg this year] and is very versatile. He could DH until he was completely healthy, and play LF [Lee at DH], 2B, 1B, RF. Catalanotto could give people breathers or he could be DH. A solid #2 hitter who can get on base for MAggs, Lee, PK and Jose. While he doesn't hit much vs. LHP, the Sox have enough RH hitters to compensate. Have the Sox deal for him and Gregg Zaun. Both shouldn't cost too much in terms of talent. And both are FA's next year.
  11. Young is just an example. If PK has a better glove than the guy the Sox acquired, he'd stay at 1B. I'm not sure of Young's glove. But his bat would be nice, at DH or at 1B.
  12. The Sox are more likely to get a DH type who could play another position rather than move Paulie. Like you said though, they should keep all options open, esp, when trying to replace a guy like Frank.
  13. You're right, it's not really OF help the sox need. If Frank is gone for most of the year, the sox need a solid hitter no matter his position [i'm on the Kendall bandwagon myself]. Beltran would be the top of the order guy, who happens to play CF. That would put Maggs at DH, to help his knee heal fully. Or Lee could DH and Rowand play LF. Whoever the Sox get, Rowand will be playing fulltime. He wouldn't be benched like in years past.
  14. If Frank is out for a long time, looking for a solid 1B might not be a bad idea. Then Paulie could DH as well. Olerud might not be the guy, but someone else could be had. Dmitri Young from Det. wouldn't be a bad idea. Though Det. isn't likely to make wholesale trades when they are so close to .500.
  15. If the Sox go after Beltran, Rowand could play RF and have Maggs DH. While it may cost the Sox a few prospects, they'd get 2 compensation draft picks to help restock the system. It would be interesting to see what Hou. would be looking for in terms of minor leaguers. Probably a top OFer, and a SP. You cna never have too many arms. But I don't see Hou. dropping off the face of the earth in only 2 weeks time.
  16. Getting Nomar as a DH wouldn't be that bad. Esp. if Frank is gone for most of the year. No way would Nomar take over for Jose at SS. While it's probably not much to it, stranger things have happened.
  17. Getting another bat should be a priority. Losing an everyday player hurts more than losing a reliever or a SP. Would getting a 6th inning reliever set the sox up for the playoffs? Hardly. Seeing how the sox did with Magglio out should show everyone how big a loss Frank is. Some outside help is needed to replace Frank's high OBP. The Sox needed help before Frank got hurt and now it's a critical need.
  18. I would have taken a one legged Joe Borchard over a healthy Benard this spring. I don't think a beefed up Santiago in his late 30's and him having been in SF the last few years are unrelated.
  19. The Twins and Sox have legitimate shots at the wildcard. Esp. w/ the Royals in selloff mode and Det. should fall back down to earth in the 2nd half. Cle. should be tougher though. The Sox have more games vs Det., and Minn. has more with Clev. Teams in the East and west have three teams to contend with.
  20. My bad. I thought you were suggesting him. Benito and the 'roid allegations just don't sit well with me.
  21. No Benito. He's horrible and he's signed for 2 years. The sox should go after Kendall. With Frank out for awhile [probably] the Sox need an OBP guy to help offset Frank.
  22. Garland finished 2003 strong, with a little over 3.00 ERA in his last 20 starts. Jon is throwing the ball nice and easy, hitting his spots. Maybe that is part of the problem with him. Because when he's on he makes getting outs look so easy. People expect SP's to light up the radar gun, and get 10 K's a game. That's not Jon's game. He has better success when he's getting GB's and pop ups.
  23. The sox getting Kendall does seem like a possibility. Here's a link from today's Jayson Stark, ESPN column. The Pitt. GM reportedly wants Kendalls contract off the books and soon. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor...yson&id=1836921 If the Marlins are going after Kendall, the Sox certainly can. Esp. if Pitt takes on 30-% of his contract. Which would get Kendall's salary down under $8 mill a year for the next three years. If Pitt took on 40% then it would be under $7 mill a year.
