sox in run for soriano
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 09:15 PM) It'd be nice if we could pick up Soriano and then trade him for pieces, but there's no way we could do it, I don't think, without wounding our team. We'd have to give him up, and Pods/McCarthy might have a lot to do with it; if not them, then McCarthy and a bunch of prospects. What would we get trading to Seattle -- Ichiro? It'd be awesome, but I doubt it. No way is BMac being moved. At worst, Freddy would be involved as he can't hit 90 mph. Yesterday he got very lucky the Rangers hit the ball at people, and had solid defense behind him. Freddy and a few prospects [say a SP like Haeger or Phillips and a bullpen arm, say Adam Russell or Lucas Harrell]. My guess is the sox could turn around and deal Soriano for bullpen help. Sea. is most aggressively going after Alphonso. KW would ask for Rafael Soriano and a prospect or two in return

sox in run for soriano
Not sure if this was posted anywhere else, but Kenny was on am 1000 before the game [around 12:35-12:55pm] and basically mentioned Alphonso Soriano. In essence KW said that he could very well make a trade for an impact guy to prevent competitors from getting him and then turn around and trade him for more than he's worth. This is Soriano in a nut shell. With Det, NYY looking to land him, getting him and then dealing him to a NL team or to a team like Sea that are a long shot to make the playoffs, the sox could fill holes and keep the main competition weaker.

sox in run for soriano
A three team with the sox, M's and Nats, revolving around the key players Freddy for us, the two Soriano's, with the M's Soriano coming here? The Nats don't seem to be rebuilding with prospects but rather proven players. Add in a prospect from Sea. and the sox going to the nats, I could see a deal going forth.

sox in run for soriano
QUOTE(Maverick0984 @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 01:24 PM) Soriano is a selfish assclown though...generally kenny stays away from them The sox have been mentioned over the yrs as interested in him. BTW-what and how do you know that about Rafael or are you talking about Alphonso? QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 01:23 PM) Phil Rogers said this in his latest piece; Though he's coming back from injury, he's throwing great. Sea. may think he's at his peak and deal him before he gets hurt. Sea. could move Ibanez to DH. The Nats could use arms like Phillips, Haeger, Tracey etc.

sox in run for soriano
Rosenthal seemed to suggest that the mariners were the most aggressive in pursuing Soriano. A three way with some bullpen help--Mateo, Rafael Soriano-- coming the sox way?

Carl Crawford
QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 04:16 PM) Bruce Levine was on Carmen and Silvy last night saying he thinks KW is going to try and trade for Carl Crawford...but of course didn't go into any detail. Of course TIFWIW since it was Levineline saying it. If Kenny makes any kind of big deal involving the Sox top prospects, he'll want a young impact guy who's locked up for a few yrs [ala Crawford, Willis]. It's a long shot to get one of those deals done but it's worth a shot One thing is for sure, the sox seem intent on upgrading their lineup in at least one position--LF. But there are few guys who can play good defense, lead off and steal bases who play LF.

Jason Stark on Javier Vazquez/Freddy Garcia
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 02:49 PM) Looks like KW wants that young pitching prospect to be included as well. I ask for Humber. Pelfrey is way too unrealistic. Humber's a bit of a boom or bust with his injury problems. But if Minaya has problems making a deal elsewhere, maybe he'll come back to us. There should be other possibilites as the deadline approaches though. I'd ask for Humber as well. Pelfrey's the Mets new stud. BTW, Humber's done well in his first 5 starts back.

Carl Crawford
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 02:48 PM) I actually think Ryan Sweeney would be a must inclusion if I'm the Tampa Bay Brass. The problems of Young and Dukes have been well documented. Like iamshack said they are starting to view Gomes as a DH, which long - term makes the most sense. Baldelli is also not a good bet to stay healthy throughout the length of his contract. So I could see them being interested in a guy like Sweeney. It looks like Upton may be up soon with the big club; So maybe you wouldn't have to involve Fields in the deal. Tampa Bay want good young pitching though. They're on the right track with the young players they've brought in like Navarro, and that should continue. But if they ask for B-Mac, I look elsewhere. We control B-Mac's rights for about another 4 and a bit seasons, most of that will be pretty cheap. And that's crucial with our payroll, offering you the flexibility to make moves to upgrade the teams elsewhere. If you can get away with a Broadway, Sweeney + more prospects deal for Crawford, by all means do it. Whether the D-Rays would do that, when they rejected Ervin Santana, unfortunately I don't think so. Upton could come up at SS when Lugo is dealt. 29 errors at 3B? Good grief. That doesn't seem his spot either Sweeney IMO is untouchable as viewed by the sox brass. If the sox haven't given up on him yet w/ his lack of power I don't see them giving up now. BMac's not going anywhere. But any other pitching prospect could be dealt.

Barry Rozner makes no sense
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 01:45 PM) I saw that earlier. Usually Rozner makes a lot of sense, but I thought this was crazy also. Rozner does have really good White Sox sources though. It may be an indication of the White Sox growing dissatisfaction with Pods. If any position player is moved [which is highly doubtful] my bet would be Pods. But it would depend on the sox getting a player who could do what Pods can do only better. Gonzalez isn't close to what the sox need.

Carl Crawford
I'm going to bump this thread a bit. Crawford's name has been mentioned by various teams, Ana in particular as teams look to upgrade this yr at the deadline. The sox may not be able to add the pitching. So why not look to upgrade the defense and offense? With Pods basically needing a platoon and even has been replaced in the field with MAck, a shakeup at the top could let the players know KW and Ozzie are serious. When Pods needs to share time with Pablo Ozuna, its time to upgrade in LF. Plus, Crawford plays with the intangibles Ozzie seems to love--speed, bunting [Carl's regarded as one of the best bunters in the game], stellar defense, avg. Getting Crawford would set the sox offense and defense up for yrs to come. Trading the top prospects in the system makes sense for a 24 yr old with Crawford's talent. TB needs starting pitching. But they also need some power bats. They don't need an ace with Kazmir. They need dependable SP for sure. The key is what would it take to get him. Few teams will part with a young "ace" to get Crawford. Most teams will hold onto those, and would rather deal a bat. The price may be steep--Fields [upton has been tried at 3b, but his power numbers aren't there; also, Fields could DH or play 1b; the key for TB is getting the best hitter available. Fields is one of those and plays a premium position]; Lance Broadway; Haeger; Phillips; and one of either Lucas Harrell or Adam Russell. If the sox unload top prospects, it shoudn't be for rental players. It should be for a guy who fits in with the long term makeup of the club, who can also help in the short term. Pods could be dealt once the Sox acquired Crawford, for a prospect or two. ATL needs both a LFer and a leadoff man, and could be a partner. Langerhans and Thorman aren't cutting it

Backup Catchers
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 12:40 AM) Torrealba would be ideal, because IIRC the Rockies have a catcher who's just raking down at AAA, so hence it would probably be a good time for them to move him. Torrealba has some nice splits vs LHP, this yr in 37 abs--.297/.350/.514 and the last 3 yrs--.276/.344/.512 Wouldn't AJ have some insight into Yorvit from his SF days?

Tom Gordon on the block?
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 10:48 PM) I'm going to bump this with no update on the situation, just due to a thought I had. This Sox team is composed mainly of guys with World Series rings, largely from the group last year. It also appears that there is a little less motivation and a little less hunger and fire in this team than last year. Obviously there are some who weren't on last year's team(Thome, Vazquez, Thornton, Cintron, Mackowiak, Riske, and not much more after that), but by and large this is last year's team. With that in mind, consider that Tom Gordon is a 38-year old pitcher who's had a very long and very successful career in the majors, and it's close to being over. He's still a very solid reliever with excellent stuff, which makes him more attractive, considering his stuff will probably not degrade a ton over the next two years, barring injuries, so it would be a decent long-term investment. And even though he's been on quite a few winning teams, he has no World Series ring. With all that in consideration, I would have to imagine that he probably wants a ring quite badly before he hangs up the cleats. The bullpen is without much guidance at all, other than what they went through last year, and he'd help to provide it with some leadership. It's also the type of big, yet not earth-shattering move that may help start some good baseball over a period of time. Just throwing it out there, because I think Tom Gordon would be a huge addition to the team, both mentally and personel wise. Of course, if the cost is Fields or Sweeney, you'd try and offer them a package of perhaps Tracey and Broadway. If that wouldn't work, I'd probably try and work on Garcia for Gordon straight up(and while I understand Garcia is in his prime, and is signed to a relatively large deal, he could be attractive to the Phillies due to his contract being affordable, and any potential value he may have this year or next could be used to net some prospects for them). You would be getting the bad end of the deal, all things considered, but that would definately be a huge wake-up call to the team. The sox aren't going into the trade deadline this yr thinking "let's not mess with team chemistry", or "we have all the pieces we need, we can stand pat". A deal for Gordon, or any other big upgrade, though may require someone off the current sox 25 man roster. That certainly would be a wake up call.

Fields and Sweeney not available
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 06:36 PM) It's harder to find thirdbasemen who can hit than it is finding outfielders (specifically corner OFers) who can hit. You move him to LF, you're making a concession that he isn't all that great defensively at third (even if Crede is there), thus, his trade value is going to fall. Fields is a good enough athlete to make the move over winter. If he plays LF in a winter league, and all throughout Spring Training, I think he'll be okay out there. Teams move players/ prospects a lot, esp. when there are other players at certain positions. You look at some all stars like Chipper Jones, Miguel Cabrera and Arod as a few examples. If someone is blocking the players' path, and another spot in the field is open, IMO, that won't hurt the player's value who is moved. Most GM's would understand moving Fields with Crede set at 3rd. Would Fields come in and supplant the .300 hitting gold glove caliber playing Crede? Not a chance right away. IMO, if Fields can play a corner OF spot , that would enhance his value not diminish it. That would give a team options for 2-3 spots to get fields' bat in the lineup. QUOTE(soxpride77 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 08:26 PM) I still disagree, there are scouts at all those minor league games writing up scouting reports. Evreyone knows through those if he is a liability or not. I am just saying that if we plan on keeping him and Crede, then why not see how Fields does out in the outfield? IF Fields doesn't play the OF in the minors, such as this yr in Charlotte, that would seem to suggest the Sox would move him. Who cares if he makes a few errors in left or right if the sox plan on keeping him? If the sox are that high on him, who cares if his batting avg dips a bit as he adjusts to the OF? If they don't want his value to diminish, they'd keep him at 3b. Another thing to consider, Fields still needs time playing 3b. So if the sox don't play him elsewhere, they still may keep him.

Fields and Sweeney not available
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 02:14 PM) I'm kind of shocked that KW would annoint Fields a major league all star before he has ever played 1 major league game. IIRC, KW also said the same thing about Chris Young publicly.

Fields and Sweeney not available
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 12:33 PM) However, guys like Charlie Haeger, Wes Whisler, Ray Liotta, Heath Phillips, etc. should be on their toes. Add in Broadway maybe and see if the Sox minor league pitchers match up with any teams that have bullpen guys available. Philly may.

Fields and Sweeney not available
Here's another snippet from Kenny Williams in the Tribune: "No one in the American League is interested in helping us," said Williams, estimating there are no more than six or seven teams that might be willing to deal with the Sox. "So you've effectively reduced it to a handful of teams, so now you have to deal with teams that are in contention. So now you have to give to those teams who need help now. I'm not interested in trading anyone off my major-league club. "So the talk is about prospects. Well, teams in contention don't want or need prospects because they're trying to win now." That virtually leaves Williams with the possibility of exploring three- and four-teams deals, "but really, only through the National League." ----So, with no one on the major league roster available, and Sweeney and Fields, the sox must find a fit with the few teams in the NL who must choose between the sox other prospects.

Fields and Sweeney not available
Then Fields should be tried in the OF then, right? He's certainly not going to replace Crede at 3b. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 11:00 AM) You can probably scrap the Linebrink talks then; IMO, a trade for Linebrink would start with Freddy anyway.

7/18 Games
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 11:01 AM) You only had to look at the Warthog rotation to start the season with Harrell, Russell, Whisler and Egbert to see that SP depth in our minor league system certainly isn't a problem at all, even without the likes of Gonzalez and Haigwood no longer there. I was also looking at bullpen guys in Kanny and W/S. Guys like Jason Rice [66k's/ 22 BB in 55 ip, .188 baa], Oneli Perez [moved to w/s after having 42 k's/ 8 bb's, .172 baa in 36 1/3 ip in Kanny], Jay Marshall [32 k's/ 7 bb's, .211 baa in 41 2/3 ip], and Fernando Hernandez jr. [52 k's, 21 bb's, .226 baa in 43 ip] are posting some impressive numbers. Don't know much about them.

7/18 Games
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 19, 2006 -> 05:07 AM) B-Ham won 7-4. Russell in his 1st start, 6.2IP, 7H, 3ER, 2BB's and 7K's. Collaro 3 for 4 with 3 RBI's. Lopez and Nanita had 2 hits each. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...mobaax_biraax_1 Winston - Salem won 4-0. Egbert pitched 6 shutout innings with 5K's. ERA down to 2.96 now. Him and Whisler could be up at AA with Harrell and Russell as well. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/mil...wswafa_lynafa_1 The sox have a lot of arms coming on soon that should help the big league club. Trades no doubt will thin out some of the arms but the strong pitching is a nice luxury to have

Freddy throwing harder?
I didn't see that Freddy's velocity was up in the Yankees game. I expected him to be at his best in his first start after the all-star break. This was the longest rest he's had all yr and should have been pitching w/ some extra "giddyyap". It's a good sign, whether he stays or is traded. It means he's probably healthy

ESPN Report: Kenny Looking at Scott Linebrink
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 06:00 PM) He's actually mentioned in the rumor, unlike Mackowiak or Fields. I don't know why they'd want to get rid of him. And what exactly is Pods doing well in LF? His defense is terrible. CAmeron may be mentioned, but he's hitting well, and with some pop. CF is the least of SD's problems. Who'll replace Cameron in Cf for SD? They have Giles in RF, CAmeron in CF, Roberts in LF, and Eric Young. Nothing in house or in the minors. Pods may be not be the best fielder. But Cameron isn't going to replace him, nor will BA slide over from CF. Who'll hit leadoff? The Sox may need a backup OFer who can hit from the right side, so Ozuna doesn't have to play LF. But Cameron isn't it. I think POds will play more vs LHP as the season wears on. IMO, Ozzie is saving Pods by not playing much vs LHP right now.

ESPN Report: Kenny Looking at Scott Linebrink
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 06:00 PM) Isn't Cameron a FA-to-be or does he have years left on his contract? A free agent to be, I believe

ESPN Report: Kenny Looking at Scott Linebrink
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 04:05 PM) If the Padres wanted Mackowiak half as badly as you seem to want to get rid of him, they'd have mentioned him somewhere in one of these rumors. They don't want him, give it up. If it would keep Fields from being dealt, so be it. BTW, Fields has not been mentioned in any of these rumors either. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 05:28 PM) s***, if we got Cameron, I'd let him or BA play RF and move Dye to LF because he is sloooooow. Then let Iguchi lead off. Cameron makes little sense for the Sox, with BA coming on and Pods doing well in LF. And why exactly would SD get rid of him in the first place?
-
Would you trade Freddy?
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 03:04 PM) I think Haeger should be considered more than just a spare minor league part. Just by considering his minor league numbers (and that some people say he could be in a lot of teams' rotations), he should have a little more value than just being a throw-in. When I'm talking "spare parts" i mean guys who don't really fit with the sox but have decent upside. Haeger and his knuckleball are more valuable to other teams. As far as what teams may overpay for Freddy [or meet the sox request for top talent], SD was looking into JEff Weaver, and have been mentioned as interested in Rodrigo Lopez. If they could get better than those two in Freddy, they may bite. SD would move Clay Hensley to relief or back to AAA as his ERA has steadily been climbing the last month or so. Having PEavy, Chris Young, Freddy and Woody Williams in a short series would be solid.
-
Would you trade Freddy?
San Diego could make sense for Freddy. They should be willing to part with Linebrink in order to a get a solid guy like Freddy [who will do better in the weaker NL, facing weak #8 hitters and the pitcher]. If SD can't get more offense, better to stock up on pitching. Would KW do a deal of Freddy and a spare minor league part [Phillips, or Haeger] for Linebrink and a prospect? That deal would strengthen the rotation by putting a fresh BMac in the rotation, and the bullpen. Tracey could likely take over the long relief role/ short set up that BMac held.
