  1. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 05:03 PM) I love Hermy; it's good to see him back up with the club, even if it's just for a brief amount of time. If Hermy does well in Sept, I could see him seeing a roster spot if the sox are playing in Oct. Riske hasn't thrown meaningful innings in a while.
  2. The short answer to the original question is No. This team hasn't quit. But no fan can say the Sox players are quitting without knowing anything that is happening in the clubhouse, or what is in the players minds and hearts. But I'll leave that for all you professional shrinks out here posting on Soxtalk
  3. QUOTE(daa84 @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 09:55 PM) dustin hermanson, to this day, is the biggest unsung hero of the 2005 white sox....no he didnt do anything down the stretch and in the postseason, but people forget that this guy had 34 saves, and converted like 24 of his first 25...while shingo had 6....so dustin coulda ended up with 40 saves for us...not to mention not giving up a run in his first 24 innings or something....just saying as far as regular season heroes go from last year...dustins right up there Plus the fact that he tutored Jenks, got him into a closer's mentality. Good to see Hermie back. Now just get some outs.
  4. It's not on the sox site
  5. If Dye can't go, start the best defensive Rfer. If it's Sweeney, which is probable, play him. MAck can't hit LHP anyway.
  6. QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 05:27 AM) I may be off base in all your minds but I can't believe the entire Sox fan base thinks our skipper is terrible. If I got to go to games at the Cell would everybody be grumbling and wanting Oz's head? I can't believe a majority of our fans think he sucks. I think he's a good manager. I think our talent is suspect in many areas. Call me a dumbass but that's my take. Maybe a vocal minority around here think's Ozzie sucks, but I don't. The Sox pitching and inconsistent hitting that's far too dependent on the HR has gotten the sox to this point [which isn't too bad, in line for the wild card]. He may not be the best in game manager. And some of his moves have been questionable. But it's the players performance or lack thereof more than Ozzie's moves that will decide if the sox make the playoffs.
  7. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 01:22 PM) White Sox starters lead MLB in innings pitched. These are the same starters KW was so worried about after last year's workload that he had 6 starters on the roster for a rest. They haven't gotten that rest and have not been very good. Everyone [except Jose] is projected to pitch less innings this yr than last. Jose threw 204 innings and is on par for 205. 2005 innings projected 2006 Jon-221 205 MB-236 216 Freddy-228 213 KW had 6 SP's this yr in case someone went down, not to give guy's a rest. No teams give their SP's a breather during the yr, unless a guy is hurt.
  8. Coming into the KC series I was worried about the sox. KC had just beaten Minny 2 of 3 in Minnesota, where the twins have the best home record in baseball. I'd be very, very surprised if the sox don't win at least 2 of 3 vs Boston QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 03:47 AM) When Konerko stops pulling every pitch no matter how far low and away it is. When Pods is on the bench, and someone else is playing in LF. When BA is our centerfielder and not a platoon mate with a butcher. When we bring back Hrniak to chat with Uribe so we can get him to ditch Profundo, and start squaring the ball up. When we get AJ to hit to all fields again. The game I watched on Sunday, the first four of your list happened [except Hriniak wasn't seen, but the Uribe who doubled hit the ball square].
  9. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 02:24 AM) If only a few Sox players would bring that sort of passion to the game. Which guys on the sox can you name that don't have that passion?! The numbers I bet are very few, if any. Even Freddy who gets p.o.ed at his teammates has passion to win QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 4, 2006 -> 03:04 AM) Isn't it ironic that for all the rest Ozzie has given his regular players, he has given his starting pitchers none? How often do teams skip a guy's spot in the rotation just to give a guy a rest? The SP's have almost certainly pitched fewer innings than last year at this point. I'd be interested in the numbers [though the innings eaten by the bullpen when el Duque threw shouldn't count]. Most guys haven't gone as deep into games this yr. that, IMO, counts as a "rest".
  10. I hope Sweeney sees some action in LF Sat. or Sun. in place of Pods. Pods had hit like .350+ off Hernandez in the past. That O-for couldn't help Pods' case. I could see Ozuna in LF on Sat. vs Perez, though.
  11. No way would I put Charlie into the 07 rotation [after 2 innings of good ball?]. Haeger could be working himself into a long relief role if he keeps throwing well. Contreras is a keeper despite his struggles. Freddy is still the odd man out. With few high quality free agent SP's out there, someone will pay a decent price for one of the sox SP's. But the Sox could and probably would get burned if they tried to trade 2. Few guys out there are better than what the sox currently have.
  12. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 08:06 PM) Sweeney-Anderson-Dye tonight? I'd go for a Iguchi- Sweeney-Dye 1-3.
  13. QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 31, 2006 -> 09:44 PM) I say play Pods every day and upgrade this offseason. We can't win a pennant with the other options out there. We're still in the race with a month to go. Those other guys are all scrubs. You've got to play Pods. The other guys are not MLB starters. Pods might need some time off. If not for him personally to regroup, to put someone else in who can help the sox win. The way Pods is going, he's doing more harm than good. If he's not in for his speed and offense, his glove won't keep him around. Give him a few days off, try Iguchi in leadoff, and give Sweeney a shot in the #2 hole vs RHP
  14. QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 08:07 PM) I'm a little torn. I'm happy to see these dudes up (and very excited in Sweeney's case- starting his clock already signals that he might very well be in the plans for next season) but I really would have liked them to get some playoff experience in AAA. IIRC, none of them have been on any highly successful teams since entering professional baseball. IMO, playing in a major league pennant race will give them >>>> better experience than playing in a AAA race. Shows them how they need to prepare for games, approach wins, losses, good/ bad outings, etc. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 1, 2006 -> 08:32 PM) I think Sweeney won't see much playing time. I am looking forward to seeing him though. I also am looking forward to seeing Stewart play although I don't think the plan is to play any of these guys much. If Logan or Haeger pitch a lot, it means something has gone very wrong. If Sweeney hits from day 1, he could see a decent amount of PT. Logan will be tried as the LOGGY to start. But he could see important innings if he does well in short stints. Haeger will be the long man in the pen if guys can't last to the 6th, or for mop up innings with the sox up big [hopefully]. He shouldn't see much time
  15. No. Just a team looking to get the best deal possible for their players. Best guess is that Detroit is offering the best available players in return for Hendry's scrubs.
  16. This is a big game to get to stay 1 1/2 up. Minny is almost a lock to win with Santana pitching. But they'll have a hard time this weekend in NY. I think Javy will do well. He can get the young DRays to swing at his pitches. I look for Javy to go 7 + innings, with over 8 K's, more than keeping the sox in the game. It's the offense that needs to get him some runs.
  17. no. Wells looks like the LH version of Russ Ortiz. No help for the rotation or the bullpen. Boone Logan would be a better fit than Wells for Sept.
  18. Let's hope Jon steps it up again. He does and the sox win.
  19. The white sox wouldn't hide Contreras being hurt. But Jose probably would. The sox could stick in Bmac. A healthy BMac >> than an injured Contreras. I don't think he's hurt enough not to pitch. He's thrown a lot of pitches since going on the DL. It's the damn different arm angles he's throwing each pitch. Unless he's trying to compensate for an injury---I wouldn't be surprised if it was the case with him trying to suck it up and win another title.
  20. Has anyone talked about who to bring up if Thome is out for a while? My guess would be Sweeney for RF, and Dye to DH. Sweeney might not play everyday, Mack would see some RF. But Sweeney could get a lot of AB's.
  21. I think the Sox will break out of their "slump" [facing Santana, Verlander--who threw a lot better than he had previously vs. the Sox--and Rogers will make a lot of hitters look flat and lifeless]. Minor has been off and on, and throws a lot of pitches--barely able to reach the 6th in under 100 pitches. If Freddy can keep the Tigers under 4 runs and go 7 innings, the sox should be able to get the lead to Big Bobby in the 9th. Let's see Bobby throw with a lead in the 9th tonight!
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 09:48 PM) Who's out there? Usually I'd agree with you that it's easy to find that righty platoon outfielder, but judging by this year, it seems like it's impossible to find that type of player. I'm actually coming around to the idea of getting Mathews Jr. to play LF next season (and then move to RF in 2008). It depends on what the sox want to do at leadoff. Coco Crisp could be had for Freddy. Or the sox might go for a SS to leadoff--though few fit that bill that teams want to part with.
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 09:30 PM) Byres isn't a great defensive player, but he's at least serviceable out there. That's a lot more than you can say about Ozuna and Pods. However, I don't think he'll be as cheap of an option as many people think. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a 2 yr, 9 million dollar contract this offseason. The difference in defense is too slight for the money he'd make [$2.2 mill this yr and likely to get more as a FA]. The sox would be better off letting Sweeney progress in LF than spend money on a guy like Byrnes who may hurt the sox w/ his glove more than he'd help hit vs LHP.
  24. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 09:17 PM) He'd easily be our 2nd best overall outfielder this season. He has the type of energy that this team is lacking this season (besides Ozuna). Energy is one thing. Talent is another. Byrnes is a hack defensive OFer, that turns routine plays into highlight reel catches. I'm not sure he's better than Ozuna in LF. People rightfully complain about the Sox OF defense. Byrnes won't help.
  25. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 22, 2006 -> 09:13 PM) Heres a question. Where in the lineup would sweeney be most effective? 2-hole? In a perfect world, 8 or 9. The Sox might need him at 1, so as not to disrupt the other hitters. Yet I don't see Sweeney getting many starts, unless Pods is 0 for the rest of August. More likely Ryan would be a late inning defensive replacement in LF, spot start in CF.
