2006 White Sox Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(RME JICO @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 05:18 PM) From the Philadelphia Inquirer: http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/sports/15989138.htm From Dallas Morning News: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dw...de.2d3879a.html If the Phils and Sox were talking about a 3 way deal, that would probably mean the 3rd team would give the sox the players. I don't see Philly a good fit [the Rowand chatter doesn't sound right, esp. for Freddy the sox biggest trading chip] for the sox. But what tradeable assets do the Phillies really have? I could see the Red Sox being a possible 3rd team with Rowand going to Boston. That way, Freddy would be out of the AL. And the sox get Coco Crisp from Boston and a prospect or two from Philly.

What to do with Pods
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 03:44 PM) Why exactly would the Rockies do this move? Pods is a worse option than what they have. Why would they give up someone who throws that kind of heat. The Rockies are always looking for pitching. Realistically, nobody wants Pods. The Rockies are in the market for a CFer who can hit leadoff. Pods isn't perfect but he could be a fit for them. The Rockies have two rooks already to step in to start 07--Jimenez and Corpas. Jimenez is similar to Morillo. To get a leadoff hitter, they may cut ties with a bullpen guy like Morillo. We'll see. QUOTE(spiderman @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 03:51 PM) I don't know that a team like Colorado is going to trade for a guy who's eligible for arbitration...I think the White Sox will just wash their hands of him, and let him go. Pods will be a team's property for two more years when he can become a FA. He has value in the trade market. If the Sox get a deal for Pods done soon, then they don't have to worry about offering him arb. Why let him go when the sox can get something for him?

J.D. Drew?
QUOTE(R.Sweeney @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 03:14 PM) Not sure if KW will let cotts go just yet condering hes still only 26 and Walker is what 34/35 something like that .On the other hand if it means getting a guy like Coco you never know .Personally I would like to see them try to trade someone like Ragowski (since we wont have room for him til hes about 28 anyway) and maybe a lower level pitching prospect . Boston will and should only take someone who can help them win in 2007. They won't go for prospects. The Red sox have some nice young arms that might interest the White sox if Freddy was appealing to them.

What to do with Pods
QUOTE(R.Sweeney @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 03:07 PM) Exactly .Even though Pods had a bad year he will still be pretty a cheap lead off hitter for around about 3m considering what Roberts and pierre will get .Im sure there are alot of teams who would be interested in him . There are more teams in need of a leadoff hitter than there are available. With the free agents probably getting big deals like Matthews, Pierre, Roberts and Soriano, Pods should get a decent return in a trade. Esp. seeing how he won't be expensive.

J.D. Drew?
QUOTE(R.Sweeney @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 03:02 PM) I think Kenny would be very interested its just a matter of would it be a straight up trade or would Boston have to give up a minor along with Coco . This is the kind of trade KW would typically pull off .You know the kind of trade that hardly anyone suspects. I could see the Red sox being interested in Neal Cotts for Crisp. Though I wouldn't give up on Neal just yet. Not unless the sox picked up another LHP like FA Jamie Walker.

J.D. Drew?
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 12:27 PM) If Boston do go out and sign Drew, then the chances of them trading Coco Crisp increase as well, IF the Red Sox have Drew in mind to play CF, which I think they will considering they can just use Willy Mo Pena in RF. Boston likes to cut its losses pretty quick, ala Renteria prior to 06. IMO, Crisp is all but out from Boston. The key is would the sox be interested. Crisp would seem to be a very good fit for the sox. Plug him right into LF, leaving CF for BA and Sweeney. And Crisp could also play Cf and plug ryan into Lf. We'll see.

What to do with Pods
QUOTE(R.Sweeney @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) Wow. Thats some serious heat .I wouldnt mind something like that .Get that kid into spring-training and let Cooper get work with him . No doubt the guy is a bit of a project. But the sox wouldn't need him on the 25 man roster right away. The sox should have their bullpen pretty straightened out by the time spring comes, with a veteran or two to compliment what the sox already have. But to get a guy with that kind of arm, IMO that would be a decent return for Pods. Though I still think the sox could get another prospect as well as Morillo for Pods.

J.D. Drew?
QUOTE(BobDylan @ Nov 12, 2006 -> 10:57 AM) And when Omar retires the Sox have SS options where? The sox would be in the same boat if they keep Uribe for '07 and decline his '08 option. But if they rade for Omar, the sox could re-sign him for '08. The chances they would pick up Juan's 08 option--slim and none. As far as going after Drew, no. He'll ask for and get over $12 mill a yr for 3 yrs. And reading an LA article, Drew is the kind of guy who takes it far too easy on the field. After having to "baby" Pods for much of the last 2 yrs because of his legs/ groin, the sox shouldn't go after an injury risk who won't give 110% on the field. This isn't saying Pods didn't give his all. Just that the sox should get a guy with a clean history on his legs who can run with abandon--ala Figgins, crisp.

What to do with Pods
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Sox have control over Pods and is eligible for arbitration. That means they can trade him without signing him to a deal. The team that deals for him can take him to arb. or sign a new deal. With that in mind, the sox should find a few trading partners for Pods. Guys like Roberts and Pierre will be getting big deals. Pods should be a bargain for a mid salary team that thinks it has a shot at the playoffs. One possible destination is Colorado. Looking at what they have available in the minors--and that Colorado won't and shouldn't part with their best pitching prospects, one guy is very intriguing. 23 yr old Juan Morillo. He's been a SP with only 1 pitch--a 100 mph heater. Put him in AAA and work out of the bullpen, and the sox have a guy who can be called up mid year. Here's his writeup from BA's 2006 Prospect Handbook: The Rockies #7 prospect--"Morillo fires easy, effortless gas, and the White Sox reportedly clocked him at 104 mph in 2004. He regularly pops 100 mph and pitches at 95-97. Durable and resilient, he never has missed a start as a pro. He may light up radar guns but Morillo is primarily a one-pitch pitcher. He still needs to learn to command his fastball and improve his secondary pitches. He has a hard slider and a changeup, but he doesn't have enough command to throw them with confidence. His slider reaches the upper 80's but he'll try to throw it too hard and lose break. He led the California league in walks and even when he throws strikes he often leaves pitches up in the zone. Because he has one reliable pitch, several scouts see Morillo moving to the bullpen where he could develop into a big league closer. He'll stay in the rotation in AA in 2006." If he's moved to the pen, he should regularly throw close to 100mph. And if he can at least get one more pitch over for strikes, he could be a lights out bullpen guy. While he's a risk, the sox should be able to get a low level prospect along with Morillo for Pods. Thoughts? Any other possible destinations for Pods?

2006 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 11, 2006 -> 02:03 PM) Glavine is probably not much better than Humber or Pelfrey at this point. The Mets need a sure thing, a guy who can go 6, 7 innings virtually each time out from a veteran. Pelfrey and Humber can't give them that. Yet. With their offense set, they need to fix their SP.

2006 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 11, 2006 -> 02:00 AM) Tom Glavine rejected his player option for the Mets (7.5 million), and the team is expected to decline the option for him (14 million) as well. It's possible New York finds a medium between both amounts, but according to Mets message boards I've read, opinion is the preference is reuniting with Atlanta. That Mets rotation is looking rather fugly for next season. Fans on their MLB message board are discussing the possibility of Zito/Duque/Meche/Maine/ and one of Perez or Pelfrey. Mark Mulder was even mentioned. That's not a World Series team. Zito may not even happen if the Yankees or Texas step in. Of course, there ARE several pitchers available on the South Side Minaya may be interested in.... After losing Glavine, the mets seem like the team the sox can get the most from for Freddy.

Moises Alou....a solution
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 09:29 PM) If KW could be convinced he was healthy, I'd have no problem with that...but I'm just not sure he could convince people that he'd stay healthy. And I'm also not sure he has enough of that speed that Ozzie/so many folks here want. Stewart doesn't have the speed. But he is the type of versatile hitter the sox could use.

Moises Alou....a solution
QUOTE(kane0730 @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 09:18 PM) This is the first time I've heard his name, and I love the idea. If healthy, there's our leadoff and starting LF. For the risk/ reward , Stewart is a much better option than most names being floated about. But the sox would have to have other deals lined up as well. Particularly a SS who could hit near the top of the order
-
Moises Alou....a solution
I'd rather the sox take a flier on Shannon Stewart if the prognosis for his foot is decent. He'd be a short timer.

Sheffield Traded to Tigers..
Looks good on paper for the Tigers. But it won't help much in the short term. And a bad deal in the long term.

Mets looking to deal Milledge/Heilman?
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 8, 2006 -> 05:12 PM) You're looking at this short sighted bud. It's actually very possible by trading for Vazquez we made ourselves better for the future as well. We'll see what happens with Vaz but at least it looks like he turned some type of corner, hopefully he can be an above average starter next season. But that's not really what I'm talking about when I say that trade could have made us better for the future. There is a pretty decent possibility I'd say that we could get a better package for one of our starters right now than what the DBacks got for Vaz. Obviously we dont know yet what Kenny is going to get back in return but if we could land a package like Milledge and Pelfrey/Humber(not saying we're going to get that but there is a decent shot we can get a package like that) then all the sudden we've landed two elite prospects while giving up one for Vaz. By adding this depth to the rotation, Kenny has made this team better for the present and the future. Good point. While getting two elite guys like Milledge and Pelfrey is a little far fetched, the sox should be able to trade Freddy for a return at least equal to what it took to get Vaz. Whether it's adding a bullpen arm for 2007, or getting prospects, they should be of value to that of Young and Vizcaino. In this climate for SP, even us armchair GM's could get that kind of return for Freddy. If VAz, at worst, continues eating innings for the sox in 07 and 08, along with the talent the sox will get trading Freddy, that should be equal to Young, Viz, El Duque and Freddy. But if Vaz posts a sub 4.00 ERA for the next two yrs, the sox should get the far better end of the deal.
-
Moises Alou....a solution
No to Alou. The sox need to get more athletic. They don't need to turn into the SF Giants of the AL. IIRC, Alou was one of the leaders on the cubs who'd be glad not to play once the cubs were eliminated from the playoff race in September, laughing about it with the media. Doesn't sound like an Ozzie guy.

Mets looking to deal Milledge/Heilman?
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 06:45 AM) What Detroit is doing right now is exactly what Williams should have done last offseason: shop pitchers at peak value in a market where quality starting pitchers aren't readily available. I'll continue saying it -- not trading any SP last year after obtaining Vazquez was a HUGGGEEE mistake. Aside from McCarthy, whom was expected to replace the departed pitcher. Any reasonable person would have guessed reaching the levels of which Buehrle/Contreras/Garland/Garcia reached would have been unlikely to occur again. It's almost as if Dombrowski is learning from our mistakes. One of the 4 SP's left from 2005 could have easily gone down to injury. Keeping BMac around was the sound insurance policy. You say it was a huuuuge mistake, who or what holes did you expect to fill with a trade? For prospects, coming off a WS win?! I doubt it. For an upgrade at one of the 8 positions?! Keeping all the SP's minus El Duque was the move at the time. In hindsight, knowing the sox didn't repeat, yes someone could have been moved. But not at the time. And a SP will still have very good value this offseason. It's not like the sox can only get AAAA fodder for a guy like Garcia. They should be able to get a teams 2 top 10 prospects and payroll relief. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 7, 2006 -> 04:52 AM) Humber would immediately become the Sox' best pitching prospect (quite obviously), but he left the AFL due to shoulder soreness. The injury troubles certainly have to be taken into consideration when talking about Humber. Again, when talking about Pelfrey, that's a different beast. I'd trade Garcia and even throw in some cash to get Pelfrey with the Sox. He's arguably the best pitching prospect in all of baseball right now, and I'd advocate giving up a lot for him. Pelfrey isn't going anywhere. Humber is probably too big a risk now. But the sox could realistically expect to get Carlos Gomez and a 17 yr old SP who dominated the SAL and ended up in high A, Deolis Guerra from the mets for Freddy. Get a top pitching prospect from the lower levels of the minors. The guys in AAA near ready for the bigs are too valuable for any teams to give up.

White Sox Sign Outfielder Luis Terrero
IMO, Terrero is a guy more likely to stick than be some AAAA fodder to fill a roster space. Seeing how much the sox have seen him in Spring with the D-backs, the sox scouts likely see something in him that could help them in 2007. Here was his write up in BA's 2004 Prospect Handbook: "Terrero's been a tease for most of his career. He ranked #1 in the organization 2 yrs a go and shows flashes of all 5 tools, but can't stay healthy. His thin yet sculpted physique is so tight that it constantly breaks down. He has missed time with ribcage, ankle, groin, hamstring and hamate injuries during the last 3 seasons, then was hospitalized when a blood clot led to swelling in his left arm. On the positive side, he hit for the cycle twice in 2002, then cranked a walk off homer and three run bomb in back to back spring training games and tied for the minor league lead in triples in 2003. Long limbs and good wheels allow Terrero to cover ground quickly in the OF, where he shows a plus-plus arm and on the basepaths. He runs into a lot of outs and barely breaks even stealing bases. He's also over aggressive at the plate. He displays power to all fields but has difficulty laying off bad pitches and racks up too many K's. For all his talent, Terrero has never shown consistent production. Some fear he could turn into another Ruben Rivera." No doubt the spring training games got the sox attention.

White Sox Sign Outfielder Luis Terrero
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 4, 2006 -> 05:16 AM) Please. Mack is very underrated here and it's too bad Ozzie's misuse of him makes people want him off the team or think can be replaced rather easily. Mack isn't worth the $2.75 mill he'll make in 2007. Esp. when the sox can use that money towards upgrading at SS, LF or CF, and the bullpen. IMO, a 4th OFer /late inning defensive replacement for 3 OF spots, who can excel on defense, steal some bases, hit LHP, play small ball, is more valuable to the 2007 sox than Mack when you take into account salary. We all bought into the "MAck can play 3b, 2b, and all 3 OF spots". We do have to remember that was with the Pirates, and in the NL. Seeing how little of those spots he played in 2006, Ozzie and staff must not have been very impressed with him at any place other than LF.

Let's Rekindle the Crawford Talks
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Nov 3, 2006 -> 04:33 PM) Yes they should, because he can play 3B, 2B, the corner outfield spots and is a LHB. Ozzie players that give him flexibility (see: Cintron, Ozuna, even Gload). The only spot Mack played with any regularity was LF and CF. They had the chance to play him at 3b and 2b but went to Cintron instead. Seeing how he won't be playing much CF, Mack's value is far less. He made sense for a team trying to repeat as WS champs. But my take is the sox will go with a glove first 4th OFer, who can make near the minimum [ala Terrero]. That way, the sox can upgrade a starter at SS, LF or CF with the salary difference. Cintron showed he can play 3 spots. The sox will probably pay him his $2 + mill salary. But Mack should be dealt, probably to a NL team who can use him at the spots he played in Pittsburgh [seeing how bad the Pirates had been, that's probably the reason he played so many spots---the other guys were horrible].
-
Let's Rekindle the Crawford Talks
The sox shouldn't and won't pay $2.75 mill to a 4th OFer. Esp one that can't play CF. Mack will probably be traded. With Sweeney around to fill in if someone goes down, Mack is expendable. Cintron is more valuable as he can play three IF spots.
-
Sarge Jr.
Sarge Jr. is more likely to go to LAA. If that's the case, I could see the sox making a play for figgins. He'd be cheaper than both Pierre and Matthews.
-
Little blurb from the Trib on CNNSI
Blalock has been mentioned as being on the trading block. But who would replace him at 3b? If they don't have anyone internal, Fields would have to look good to them. I'm sure Tex. could get some pitching for Blalock
-
Dave Roberts looking like a strong possibility
I think Roberts is too big of an injury risk to gamble on. Though it might mean overpaying for a guy like Pierre, the sox should be able to count him in for 160 games. Roberts should get a decent contract as well. Not Pierre money. But he'll get $5 mill a yr for 2 yrs at least. Pierre should get like $8 mill a yr over 3 yrs.
