  1. here is what i think about the sox start....you cant win a pennant in april but you can lose one...we have played easy teams but we havent played near to our expectation...but we have a winning record and we didnt lose the pennant in april like we did in '01 starting friday the twins come in followed by a long west coast road trip..these are the teams we have to beat or atleast split with to show we are capable of playing with the big boys..the season starts friday so what im going to do is wipe everyone's slate clean..pitchers start with an 0-0 0.00 and batters with 0 - 0 .000...from friday one we will see who has the heart to step up and be accounted for and who are just pretenders...firday..our "real" season begins
  2. Yep. Not much he can do, not like they'll just change their mind and call it a homer, just because Manuel yelled at them. Someone is going to say they lost this game, because Manuel didn't show enough fire. But at this point I'd like to see Backman up here. You guys are totally missing my point. The goal of the arguement isn't to overturn the call. Once the call is made that is it. The object is to get your own team fired up and take away the punch in the stomach that you just recieved by losing a 2 run HR to incompetence. YOu are standing up for your player. That is the other point. im not missing your point..im just not gonna get upset aboutnit because i know how manuel is...he is not gonna change...he is into this spiritual existance thats one with the universe...might be great for him as a human being but it sux for him as a manager...but he wont change so why worry about it?? ive been on the wally backman / nick leyva bandwagon since about july of last year..thats all i can do about that
  3. whats nice is if josh clears waivers then we got him all year..he can bounce up and down between the majors and minors without a threat of losing him or we can just trade him for something more useful............maybe some good offense for birmingham????? well , if we still had MJ im sure josh would be gone...we kinda need him around right now..we could trade him as long as inthat trade we got another catcher with ML experience who could sit at AAA waiting for sandy knees to give out lets work a deal with josh and maybe one of our many lefty relievers in the org for jamal strong from the seattle org..fastest man in baseball
  4. i take it that means his broken bone in his hand is feeling better???? i have not been keeping up on these things lately sorry..........kinda slacking and busy with the last homestand i havent had much time to look it up ......thanks......... since his return i see he had 2 doubles and a homer
  5. leave cotts in AA for now..he is having success...he didnt have much success last year so let him enjoy it..the only reason to run him up to AAA now is if we are getting ready to bring him up..if thats the case we are in trouble
  6. whats nice is if josh clears waivers then we got him all year..he can bounce up and down between the majors and minors without a threat of losing him
  7. what christensen did deserved a banning for life from baseball..the fact that scrubs drafted him after this incident happened speaks volumes...if the sox drafted this guy id have been seriously pissed..there is a huge difference using a baseball as a weapon against a human then against a bird the catcher had a tryout last year with the schaumburg flyers...ron kittle said he had some positives but needed to work on certian parts of his game..he was encouraged to put the work in and comeback this year for another try out...i dont think this kid was a serious prospect..probably a late rounder..double digits..but then again mike piazza was picked i nthe 57th round only because he was a relative or family friend to tommy lasorda so you never know...
  8. i saw sanders pitch in ST..bigtime fan of his...it was only one inning but i was trying to compare his st uff t o kelly wunsch's because i figured he was battling kelly for the lefty spot...his stuff is much better than kelly's...doesnt mean he will be a better pitcher than kelly..but he has the tools to be..now its up to him...but i felt he should have gotten the last spot if we took 12 pitchers..be real interesting to see what happens when danny comes back
  9. detective worked was too hard on that one hsc..was talking to jentheA'sfan and few others over on the A's board afew weeks ago ...geez..all of them said how art howe really misused billy down the stretch lst year...on top of the innings pitched in which billy throws more pitches per IP than any pitcher , howe had him up and down alot and didnt use him..brought him in in the 8th inning when they felt he wasnt properly warmed up...they said koch lost it for the most part down the stretch and in the playoffs last year and his performance this year comes as no surprise to them... maybe KW should take a hnadle and check with fans of another team about the value of players...what could it hurt??...looks like the A's fans nailed billy koch
  10. I'm not talking about just bad preformance knocking. I am all for ripping someone who is playing badly. But some people seem to have anti-fan groups with agendas against certian players. I wonder why Maggs doesn't have one, but some of our teams superstars do? you wanna know why maggs doesnt have an anti-maggs fan club???..look no further than his at bat in the 7th inning
  11. someone please tell the skanks its april and not sept then
  12. i was never a fan of gary ward as a player and i sure cant see what he has done that makes hm so much more valuable than von joshua....we really screwed letting that guy go...he had the guts to call this team out publicly about how lazy it was...of course KW didnt like that since it was one of hi additions as the main target...under von players were forced to work hard with a plan for that players style..and it worked...too bad some player revolted and cried to KW about "VON IS TOO HARD ON ME..CRAMPING MY STYLE this team is very talented..and it ha splayed reasonably well so far this year considering the hot run of pitching it has run up against...but i hope we are not getting a reputation as a team where lazy players go to collect a paycheck...ts wierd but the fact that jose valentin and magglio are loved so much by the fans because of their tireless work ethic and devotion to playing the game right..what does that say about a majority of the other guys??...everyone should play the game the right way.. a guy on another site said today about the b****ing of jimenex why no one ever b****es about maggs???...got me thinking why we do b**** about players...mostly its not because of good or bad performance..its about effort or the perception of the effort they put into their craft
  13. this was the guy i posted about in ST where i said he will make kelly wunsch expendable..this kid has real good stuff..and 3 lefties i nthe pen...suck on that twinkies
  14. did anyone else catch this..in the 7th down 5-1...very well could have been maggs last at bat to keep the streak alive...from a 2-1 count he takes trwo pitches that were borderline strikes called balls to draw the walk to get us a baserunner...he gave up his 18 game hitting streak to help the team...its why is a superstar in my book
  15. You call that arguing? I call that asking the ump what he is doing for dinner tonight. He was out there for all of 10 seconds, besides the time he was waiting for an answer. He abandoned his team at a critical juncture. for jerry thats argueing
  16. ball was 5-7 feet fair when it passed the foul pole..but the big thing was it wasnt a homer that wrapped around the pole..it landed in a seat that was about 3 seats over from the foul pole...the ball in its flight at no time was in foul territory...horrible umping tonight...cant say anything else about it you knows its bad when manuel gets off his duff to argue TWICE in one game
  17. 3 lefties in the pen just in time for the twinkies
  18. I'm not talking about just bad preformance knocking. I am all for ripping someone who is playing badly. But some people seem to have anti-fan groups with agendas against certian players. I wonder why Maggs doesn't have one, but some of our teams superstars do? Thats another good point. We have people here who are completely against certain people no matter what they do. Some hate them cuz they like the person whos spot they took (hsc and baggs are Aaron Miles fans, which is why they hate DJ, I liked Miles but I was even more in favor of DJ, and I have been since the beginning, after all, hes done pretty good) and some hate people because their just idiots (KW for example, people would still rip on him after he fleeced everyone in the Colon trade). I wasnt a huge supporter of Williams but when he made that trade I congratulated him. All Im saying, is give credit where such is due and criticism where such is due. There are certain players I like basically without exception, like Frank and DJ. But I will rip on em when I think they arent doing well enough... i dont hate jimenez because he took miles spot...i dont even hate him...ive given him credit for his hot start and the talent he possesses..i just dont want to see anyone derail this team this year..it is so damn important that we win so we can resign colon , pick up maggs option ,ect...the team has to come first this year..thats something that hasnt happened since '00..anyone who could even remotely have a chance of screwing that up im gonna watch real close
  19. im not the only one that thinks koch sux..from baseball prospectus 2003 Rule of Commerce: Stock up on inexpensive goods that others overvalue. In the case of the A's, it's saves. Run Isrighausen's saves up, let him move along and become someone else's financial problem-we'll take the compensation. Run Billy Koch's saves up, and send him to an organization that can't even identify its own good relievers for Keith Foulke, Joe Valentine, and a patient catcher with some upside. It's a good plan, and as long as some GMs pay more attention to baseball's arcane accounting system than performance, someone will always overpay for a "proven closer."
  20. if the bears dont draft leftwich maybe they could sign him
  21. with the spread of SARS in toronto will that have any effect on baseball there???...CDC is saying you shouldnt go to toronto and to avoid latge crowds if you do..should games in toronto be cancelled or postponed???...what happens if the jays ort a visiting team goes in there and has a full blown attack of SARS??? anyone hear any comments from the players association on this??
  22. too early to tell..be a nice problem to have though...make that a great problem
  23. geez heather you jinxed the shut out last night in the chatroom by talking about it and now you just ensured the collar for maggs tonight..YOU DONT TALK ABOUT THESE THINGS!!! i like this version of magglio...no huge games but no collars either..just a steady consistant performance
  24. Ummmm .... do you know something? lets just say i have heard things...............nothing official yet but ....something to worry about just the same........ ok, here is a list of players who might be hurting sandy, paulie and jon garland which i do not think so. I would sub Koch for Sandy. His Fastball is at least 5 mph slow... that saids possible injury to me. ive believed all along now that billy bean pulled a fast one on kenny...he new koch was hurt or was atleast readt to pitch like crap due to misuse by art how last year...koch has to be hurt..you just dont lose 5 -10 mph off your fatsball..especially when you are a fastball pitcher
  25. ask oakland fans how well koch "did his work" last year...ask toronto fans how well koch "did his work" there..ask san deigo fans about DJ "doing his work" molto..has koch deserved to be ripped on from day one??..and i didnt rip on koch before the season started...even i didnt think he would pitch this bad..unless of course you consider me bring up stats showing foulke was a much better pitcher as "ripping" on him...i ripped on williams for making the deal...billy bean knew kocbh was screwed up thats why he made the deal..art howe really overworked koch down the stretch and we are the benficiaries of that "overworkedness" im one of the few giving koch an excuse...i think he is pitching hurt..but even healthy he is not in the same class as foulke..and the fact we gave up MJ and had to resign alomar and keep josh paul on the roster as insurance against injury for sandy really makes this trade look bad right now.... if all our players are so great and nev er deserve to be ripped on..why havent we won anything since '17???...think maybe some of our fans are guilty of wearing rose colored glasses???
