  1. How could anyone have ever predicted that a high-school right-hander from a cold weather climate that was throwing a knuckle curve seemingly since birth would be an injury risk?
  2. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 09:38 AM) Oakland loves the White Sox farm system. They could conceivably roll three guys out of the bullpen next season that were, or should have been, in Birmingham in '07. Wing is a California guy right? A move to the West Coast is certainly an improvement for him then.
  3. From today's USA Today: OAKLAND ATHLETICS-Assigned LHP Jay Marshall outright to Sacramento (PCL). Agreed to terms with LHP Ryan Wing on minor league contract.
  4. I don't think this warrants its own thread, so I assume this is the proper place to put it since we've talked about prospect rankings, but Aaron Cunningham was named the #7 prospect in the Arizona system by Baseball America.
  5. QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 09:35 AM) who else did we just lose, I only heard White Sox org at the end? I'm guessing you're referring to Garry Bakker. Gone to the Mets in the AAA portion.
  6. QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) Goodbye Ray Liotta. And Ryan Rodriguez.
  7. Hernandez is gone. To Oakland. First Marshall, now Fernie. Billy Beane knows the Sox system better than KW
  8. Are there any real first basemen left in the system at this point?
  9. The Sox have reportedly traded Chris Carter to the Diamondbacks for Carlos Quentin. Discuss.
  10. QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 06:34 PM) how sure of that are you? On a scale of one to ten, with seven being the highest, I'm about a green. I'm completely sure. Unless he recently started switch-hitting. Like, since the end of the season.
  11. QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 11:37 PM) I have a question... is he a righty or a switch hitter? I've seen sites contradicting each other. Right-handed.
  12. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 10:57 AM) When I look at our roster...if we could clear a spot on the 40 man to pick up a guy, I can certainly see us having room for a doubles hitting Right Handed OF with decent speed. It'd be an excellent guy to stick into a quasi-platoon with Owens and to give Dye/whoever else we get some extra rest. In 2006 this kid stole 39 bases between single and double A. That sounds an awful lot like the kind of guy we might want. Barton's intriguing, and an odd story. It's not often that you see a guy go undrafted out of a powerhouse like Miami and then rake (even at an advanced age) in High-A and Double-A. Teams were scared off by an internship that he had lined up at Boeing thanks to his aeronautical engineering studies in college. Cleveland went after him and signed him cheap as a FA. He can play. I can't comment on his desire this past season, but he can play a bit.
  13. QUOTE(buckweaver @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 09:56 AM) Perhaps they just listed all prospects alphabetically.
  14. Minor League Baseball.com is unveiling their Top 50 Prospect list over the course of five days, with ten prospects per day. Today, the first (and probably only) White Sox farmhand appeared on the list, as Gio Gonzalez checked in at #24, sandwiched between Arizona's Carlos Gonzalez (23) and Texas' Eric Hurley (25). Here's what they said about Gonzalez: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/ne...&pid=461829
  15. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 01:00 PM) Where did you get those numbers? I've been looking for a reliable place to find those stats for some time. I've got a friend that works for an Eastern League club, and he was nice enough to share his log-in information to the official Minor League Baseball stats site.
  16. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 08:31 AM) I kind of doubt that, given that Lucy threw out nearly 50% of runners against in 2007. That's a very high rate. I don't know Armstrong's numbers, because MILB doesn't publish that stat (I only know Lucy's because he is an AAP of mine and I did a quick count from the box scores). But anything higher than that would be extraordinary. I think you need to re-check your math. Lucy (BIR) 39cs-115att = 34% Lucy (CHA) 9-25 = 36% Lucy (Total) 48-140 = 34% Armstrong (WS) 29-90 = 32% Armstrong (BIR) 9-21 = 43% Armstrong (Total) 38-111 = 34% I'd give Armstrong a slight benefit of the doubt assuming that the W-S pitchers are less skilled at holding runners on. Granted, the base-stealers aren't as skilled there either, but I think they still have the advantage on the pitchers.
  17. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 04:55 PM) There are 4 catchers on the roster now. Sox haven't had 4 catchers on the 40 man for as long as I can recall. I don't think AJ is going anywhere. Who's looking for young cheap good defensive catching as part of a trade? Well. I know Boston probably is. And they happen to have a young, readily available, relatively inexpensive center-fielder with top of the order speed (something the Sox (not Sawx) recently lost in a DFA) and a penchant for defensive wizardry. Without considering whether or not you would WANT Coco Crisp, how much would it take to get him?
  18. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 04:43 PM) He did hit well in A+ this past year (though he was repeating), the system is very thin on catchers, he's got more than 4 years service in (and, I think, would have been an FA). Plus I think they want to keep the pressure on Lucy, who they are probably not at all sold on even as a future backup. In my humble opinion Armstrong is superior to Lucy defensively, especially when it comes to arm strength. Looked to be in much better shape this year than last year as well. I'm a little bit surprised about Harrell. Hope he comes back healthy and firing on all cylinders.
  19. According to the Chicago Tribune... The White Sox cut ties with injured leadoff hitter Scott Podsednik by designating him for assignment Tuesday. The move comes as little surprise as the Sox sought an upgrade. Podsednik, one of the heroes of the 2005 World Championship season who was eligible for arbitration, is now a free agent. The move was made to make room for shortstop Orlando Cabrera on the 40-man roster. The Sox added pitchers Jack Egbert, Adam Russell and Lucas Harrell and catcher Cole Armstrong to the 40-man roster, which is now full.
  20. QUOTE(scenario @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 12:23 PM) Another point many people miss about Gio's year... He didn't just lead the Southern League in strikeouts... He led ALL of minor league baseball (all teams at all levels) in strikeouts. I had the chance to see him at both the beginning and end of the year. Totally different pitcher in my mind. He went for the strikeout less, pitched to contact more, and (I think) lasted longer as a result. Seems like he really learned how to pitch this year. Keep his age in mind. Even though he was repeating Double-A, he was still amongst the youngest pitchers to play a full year in the Southern League.
  21. QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 07:58 AM) I'm really starting to like Chris Getz...ive never seen him play but im starting to think he could be one of the Twins type guys that always bug the hell out of us, which would be a good thing to have on this team He doesn't do anything spectacularly, but he does pretty much everything well. If not for the injury that robbed him of almost two months, he would have been a Southern League post-season All-Star. The offensive performance in Birmingham really suffered without him at the top of the lineup. He's a big leaguer, maybe not an everyday guy, but he's a big leaguer.
  22. Gio Gonzalez was named a Topps' Double-A All-Star. Basically, he was the top LHP in Double-A according to Topps and MiLB.
  23. QUOTE(3E8 @ Nov 10, 2007 -> 08:11 PM) Has anyone had an extended look at Egbert the past two seasons? The mediocre stuff thing may be overblown, his secondary pitches could be developing better than we know. Over the past 300 innings he's struck out one batter per inning while allowing less than 8 H/9. This can't be just smoke and mirrors and cunning and guile. At southsidesox.com's recent community prospect list I have Egbert as our #3 prospect behind Gio and DLS respectively. What exactly are you asking? I had the chance to see Jack several times in W-S and Birmingham.
  24. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 12:45 AM) He may have dynamite stuff... No. He doesn't. He has dynamite height if that counts for anything, but not dynamite stuff.
  25. 10/31: Saguaros: 3 Desert Dogs: 4 Egbert: GS, 3.0 ip, 5 h, 2 r, 2 er, 0 bb, 3 k Hernandez: 1.0 ip, 1 h, 1 k (still no earned runs allowed in 8.2 innings of work this fall) Sweeney: 1-4, scored game winning run in 9th after singling and stealing 2nd
