k0na breaks story on Danks 5 years/$65mil ext...Heyman confirms
Buehrlesque replied to DirtySox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This is great news if true. Do you guys really think rebuilding hinges on a Danks trade? The Sox were/are plain and simple NOT going to get any value in return for a rental of Danks (coming off a down year) in a market crowded with Gio, Jurrjens, Garza, Davis/Neimann, etc. Any return for a lame duck Danks would not be something to hang your hat on rebuilding a farm system. Bottom line: Danks in the Sox rotation for 5 more years > Some middling prospect. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 10:59 AM) They could also be theoretically leaving room open for drafting someone in the Rule 5. Eh, it's possible, but I think it's more likely they're just prepping for some trades. KW hasn't done much with the Rule V in a long time, certainly not enough to leave 4 spots open for someone. He usually just passes. In fact, didn't he leave the Winter Meetings early last year, before the draft was even held?

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Dec 2, 2011 -> 10:40 AM) Can someone explain to me why with 4 slots on 40 man, we wouldnt protect more players? I know this is probably a dumb question! It's not a dumb question- I don't understand it either. Unless the Sox are expecting a massive influx of players from the Danks1/Quentin/Thornton/whoever else trades that might go down next week, I don't know why they wouldn't protect Danks2/Kuhn/Short/Doyle. Not that any of those guys are super special, but in an organization thin on minor league talent, and with room on the 40-man, why not?

Selig announcing changes including Astros and Wild Card
Buehrlesque replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 17, 2011 -> 04:21 PM) The extra wildcard team idea is just a way to make sure Boston doesn't miss another playoff appearance. Now they can get BOS, NY, and TB in every year. I know this is the snarky stock comment about the extra Wildcard, but I disagree. All the new system does is increase the competition for the Wildcard spot. If you win your division, you're set. If not, you have to sweat it out in a one-game playoff. After the one-game playoff, the posteason is exactly the same as the past 16 years. -
What should be the Sox focus in the offseason?
Buehrlesque replied to harfman77's topic in Pale Hose Talk
100% agree that the very first thing that needs to be addressed is the coaching staff and manager (and possibly the GM). One other thing: when talking about the OF next year, I see most people saying De Aza in LF, Rios in CF and Viciedo in RF. I would switch it around a bit: Viciedo - LF De Aza - CF Rios - RF That's the best defensive outfield. If the Sox bring in a new coaching/management team that objectively evaluates talent vs. just going with what is already entrenched by veterans, they'll do this. -
IF the Sox come back and finish only 1 or 2 games out,
Buehrlesque replied to balfanman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 29, 2011 -> 12:15 PM) If you finish a game or two out after you make a late run at it I think it would be easy to satrt cherry picking and second guessing everything trhat we didn't think was done right. We dug ahole early by going 11-22. That was it IMO If the Sox have this epic "late run" that gets them back to 1 or 2 games out the day the season ends, it would also be easy to dismiss the run as coming in garbage time. Now that the pressure's off (their chances at the division are pretty remote), you have to take W-L performance with a grain of salt. -

Buehrlesque replied to balfanman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (balfanman @ Aug 28, 2011 -> 04:46 PM) Let's say that the Sox get hot riding Viciedos' hot bat, Detroit cools off a bit, and the Sox finish only 1 or 2 games out of first. I would be soooo ticked off at O.G. & K.W. for letting their personal agendas get in the way of the team. It would be my personal opinion that Ozzie & Kenny should both be fired immediately after the season and should never, ever have a job in baseball again for being selfish enough to destroy a teams season with their egos. Maybe I'm just venting, and I know it's a small sample size, but jeez. I'd say the bigger concern if that happened is the organization would be so pleased with the way the team fought hard and finished the season that they [would bring Guillen and Williams back. That is the true doomsday scenario. -
Sox Did Not Put in a claim on Kubel or Thome
Buehrlesque replied to The Ginger Kid's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) Buster_ESPN Buster Olney It would have made sense for CWS to either claim both Thome and Kubel, to block Cleveland, or neither;no place for CWS to use them. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:31 PM) I don't know. IF the Sox think they could keep Kubel next year, this might be a nice move to try and help pick him up. Plus, it would give the Sox the ability to offer him arbitration if they'd like. Kubel would look nice in the lineup next year and would probably see a bounce back in his power numbers moving away from Target field. I don't buy Olney's claim there, for what Chisoxfn says. There's no risk in claiming Kubel. If the Sox somehow magically got him cheap, you would have a productive player, whether used correctly or not, who at the minimum would be worth draft picks. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 02:19 PM) The Sox will pull him back. It is just an attempt to stuff the wires to get the players they would be interested in potentially trading, not claimed. Each team only gets so many claims per day as I understand it. That's what will happen. If the Sox had a sell-high chance on Konerko, I think they should take it. But I'd be shocked if they did.
-
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 01:28 PM) DKnobler DKnobler by ESPNChiSox Also on waiver wire today: Danks, Floyd, Konerko, Thornton of White Sox. With Chicago 6 1/2 out, would Kenny trade anyone? I'd love to see what would happen if someone claimed Konerko. He makes a ton of sense for the DBacks, if he even gets that far. It could completely reshape this Sox team, but it will probably never happen.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 12:17 PM) I guess I'll be the one who steps in and defends Hendry's ridiculous contracts here. In 2006-2007, when Hendry was signing anything that could move, the Tribune Company was clearly planning to sell off the Cubs. Everyone and their grandmother knew that. Jim Hendry's job at that point was to maximize revenue, to show how much money could possibly come in from a winning team. Even if they had high expenses, it gave a revenue baseline that could be used in selling the team. Hendry did his job. He put together a team that made a 2 year run at trying to win a World Series. Made it to the playoffs with easy victories in the Central twice, and sold out that ballpark every game. Set them up so that they could ad additional ads and those sort of revenue streams. Dude was told to win. Not to win while maintaining cost control, not to make sure this team is competitive for the next 5 years...win for those 2 years so that the team could be sold at a high value. Didn't see this post until right now. Right on Balta. I'm surprised more people, especially Cubs fans, don't see things this way.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 02:27 PM) Link Exactly.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Aug 19, 2011 -> 12:39 PM) Is till think the problem with the cubs was john mcdonough's involvement in player decisions. I think his mo was to attract fans not wins and forced this issue on Hendry whether it was soriano, pinella or whatnot. Yes! And the former owner, Sam Zell. I can't say they "forced" Hendry to dole out those big contracts, but clearly their vision was spend a lot on marquee names, make a big splash, and watch the value of the club go up. Hendry wasn't the greatest GM in the league, but he was also a victim of circumstance.

Random question: Have the Sox hit back-to-back homers at all this season?
-
Didn't see this posted anywhere, but apparently Ozzie just bought a $1.95 mil, 6,000 sq.ft. house in Bucktown. (Nothing compared to Paulie's 16,000 sq.ft. house in Scottsdale, I'm sure.) First of all, weird to think of Ozzie living there. Secondly, does this have any affect on his future with the Sox?

QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 12:12 PM) I'd say so, the Phils' #1, #2, and #4 prospects per BA. If you can get Brown, Singleton and Cosart for Quentin and Thornton, you do it right now, regardless of the outcome of the Red Sox series this weekend.

Jackson & Teahen to TOR for Frasor & Stewart (RHP)
Buehrlesque replied to macsandz's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 11:23 PM) CWS get Rasmus STL gets Jackson, TOR prospect TOR gets Teahen I really have no clue. This simply doesn't make sense. I know you were just spitballing there, but Sox would have to give up more to the Cards (and/or Blue Jays) to make that work. -
Jackson & Teahen to TOR for Frasor & Stewart (RHP)
Buehrlesque replied to macsandz's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 11:16 PM) That was my first thought when I saw the thread. According to the Rasmus story in the Post Dispatch last week, the Sox and Cards may need a 3rd team to get a deal done because the Sox did not have the prospect(s) the Cards were looking for. Maybe the source got confused and Jackson is really going to the Cards, with something else coming to the Blue Jays? As described in this thread, this trade is pretty silly. But this is KW style trade, and Frasor is definitely a KW guy. With De Aza being pulled from Charlotte's game tonight, you'd think a move is coming. -
7/18 GT: Sox @ Royals, 7:10pm

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 18, 2011 -> 05:09 PM) so, so true. I look around at every other roster and they're making moves not only driven by injuries but needs as well. I hate it. Teahen four days in a row... maybe they're showcasing him for a trade? -
WTF are we waiting for ? Call up Viciedo !
Buehrlesque replied to macsandz's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 20, 2011 -> 10:43 PM) Kenny is definitely putting this squarely on Ozzie, and I love it. Kenny is the GM, Ozzie is the manager. Kenny should NOT be putting this on Ozzie, it's KENNY'S call! Unless... Kenny is just giving Ozzie enough rope to hang himself with- setting up and pre-justifying a potential firing at the end of the season. -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jun 20, 2011 -> 08:40 PM) I think you've hit the nail right on the head here. He's Jerry Owens. He's Dewayne Wise. He's Pablo Ozuna and Timo Perez and Darin Erstad. He's got the blood of Rob Mackowiak coursing through his veins. Ozzie does stupid s*** all the time and Kenny just backs off or backs him up -- and BTW that's the real problem with that whole relationship, not that they fight, but that they just simply don't seem to complement each other's strengths or cover each other's weaknesses anymore. You hit it on the head: they clash. KW wants Adam Dunns and Jim Thomes; Ozzie wants Juan Pierres and Mark Kotsays. It's not a productive working relationship anymore because they have such different visions.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 20, 2011 -> 04:32 PM) DEFEND THE CUP Am I the only one who thinks Omar looks a little like ARod in this photo? -
QUOTE (kapzk @ Jun 17, 2011 -> 12:03 PM) Also nice to see him not strikeout as much. Has been 6 games since he struck out more than once. In fact he hasn't struck out in the last two games. This is what I am encouraged by. If he can just get the bat on the ball, god things will start to happen. If he starts getting the ball in the air, homers will come.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 17, 2011 -> 11:09 AM) Morrison is hot in the water? Have I missed something? And the Marlins are not in utter collapse. They've been without arguably the best pitcher in baseball for a while now and he won't be back until mid-July at the earliest. Hanley just got back from the DL. That team is pretty good when all their components are in place. Manager likely to be fired? Has he been there a full year yet? The Marlins are 1-14 in their last 15 games and are now in last place. That's utter collapse. Not saying they won't rebound, but that's as bad of a 15-game stretch as you can get. Morrison is in trouble for a topic near and dear to Sox fans' hears, tweeting. He made comments about the team firing its hitting coach that didn't sit well with ownership (the same ownership that for some reason wants Ozzie, who is constantly going off at the mouth). Enough to get traded? Probably not. But that was a sidetrack. The main point of this thread is Kenny/Ozzie vs. Hahn/Martinez.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 17, 2011 -> 10:55 AM) That was never "on the table". The Marlins asked about Guillen, and we told them that was what we wanted. Who's to say the Marlins wouldn't take that offer today? Morrison is in hot water with ownership, the team is in utter collapse, their manager is likely to be fired, and the organization loves and clearly wants Guillen. Not saying it's a sure thing, but it's not impossible.
