  1. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 11:22 AM) Just got the LCD TV, now I am wondering whether to stay with the dish or go to Comcast. What do you guys think? I have DirecTV, a friend has Comcast. Both are fine, though I like DirecTV more because the HD-DVR unit is better quality, and the menus are much easier to navigate. A lot depends on where your house is, and if you have a clear view of the southern sky, though. The dish might have to be mounted somewhere where it'd be an eyesore (I speak from experience). Also, if you have internet or phone service through Comcast, it's probably cheaper to get TV through them as well. So, I guess I'd say go with DirecTV, unless you have Comcast for other things, or can't mount the dish in a good spot.
  2. So we found a place 3 blocks west of Western, 5 blocks north of Division. Agent called it "Bucktown", Wikipedia and other places call it "Humbolt Park." The area didn't seem too dangerous -- pretty much large condo buildings all around -- but I know Humbolt is considered one of the worst areas on the Northside. Does anyone know anything about the area just west of Western? Thanks.
  3. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 27, 2008 -> 01:16 AM) Dear KW, Please don't ever do this to us again. Don't put together a team that competes for 160 games near or in first place. It was obviously your fault that Swisher and his worst career year and that Thome and PK slumped for 5 months. All you need to do is sign a bunch of fast guys, trade Macdougal and Wasserman for Chone Figgins, it shouldn't be too difficult, I did it in MLB 2k8 no problem. Trade Bobby Jenks for someone like Carlos Gomez, we have enough depth in the bullpen to cover for him. Enroll in medical school so you can heal our best hitter, bullpen arm, all-star 3rd baseman and starter. And whatever you do, don't acquire any more MVP's or ROY candidates. Invest in fast guys who hit .220, that's where the division championships are made. Follow the lead of those "pesky piranhas" and build a team that scratches its way to playoffs and gets swept every year. Signed, Clueless fan base overreacting to losing. We can't do that. Trading one-dimensional power for one-dimensional speed only works in that cement dome. It won't work in USCF.
  4. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 10:59 AM) and Lee isn't pitching fo the Indians Here is the line-up I would throw out there for all four (hopefully 3) games and say get it done you are all veterans Swisher-Cabrera-Thome-Dye-Griffey-Konerko-Ramirez -AJ-Uribe Bullpen for all three games Dotel - Thorton - Linebrink - Jenks, that's it. I'd probably switch Cabrera and Swisher. I think Swisher's a pretty decent option at #2. I might even consider Alexei at leadoff. He doesn't walk, but at least he has productive at-bats. He can also go 1st-3rd pretty well. I'd also put BA in CF against the lefty & for defense.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 10:34 AM) In 18 games and 77 PAs vs. the Sox this year he is hitting .384. Yeah... probably something to that. He is a piece of s***baseball player against almost everyone EXCEPT the Sox. Someone please hit this guy in the knee with a crowbar or something. It's because we apparently don't pay attention to the fact that he'll swing at almost ANYTHING. We throw him pitches over the fat part of the plate, and Hawk slobbers over him when he hits them hard, as pretty much anyone will at this level. Then he takes an extra base on Dye or Griffey plodding over to get the ball, and all of a sudden he's a doubles/triples machine. I also don't understand why Wise was shading him to hit to the right side when apparently the strategy was to get him out on curveballs. At this point Gomez is swinging hard in case he hits it, so anything offspeed is probably going to be pulled.
  6. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 26, 2008 -> 07:15 AM) The funny thing is, he's not that good. The White Sox just have no defense against speed. This guy can't draw a walk and swings at everything, yet we throw fastballs down the pipe to him consistently. Gomez this year: .262/.301/.367, which is a delicious OPS of .668. BB/K ratio of 25/139. He's pretty much Juan Uribe of last year, with a slightly higher average, and less power. He's also 32/43 in stolen bases, which is a 74% success rate. Not bad, but at that rate he's pretty much breaking even with helping/hurting his team's chances to score. All in all, there's a reason he's batting 9th now, and not leading off. Of course, that doesn't help when we throw high straight fastballs and hanging curves to him consistently.
  7. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Sep 25, 2008 -> 09:26 PM) ozzie is a dumbass if he doesn't put BA in CF Agreed. Then we won't see that goofy lefty in the game. The Twins have him, and Nathan left in the bullpen. Everyone else isn't very good, IIRC.
  8. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Sep 25, 2008 -> 11:48 AM) East Rogers Park is nice...West Rogers Park is up and coming, but still not a great neighborhood. And have you thought about Jefferson Park? It's on the blue line so you can get into the city...but right on the highway and past the Nagle curve so you'll miss a good deal of traffic going out. I have. A friend of mine lives in Portage Park, which is right by there. He complains constantly about how awful the Blue Line is, though, which is one of the reasons I haven't looked at much around there.
  9. My girlfriend found a place she really likes in Rogers Park, near Devon and Ashland. I'm going to see it with her on Saturday. Any opinions on Rogers Park/that part of Rogers Park? I've heard it's not the greatest area.
  10. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 07:51 PM) 2 runs scored WITHOUT ONE ball hit hard. Minnesota baseball at home. At some point you can't say it's luck. I mean, you cannot be this lucky, can you? They know how to play at home. Things that are easy outs on the road are cheap hits here. They're really going to have to change their team philosophy once they get that new stadium.
  11. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 24, 2008 -> 09:46 AM) First question: How old are you, and what do you want to be near? Is it important to be near nightlife? Commuting? The Lake? I'm 26 and work in the northeast corner of the loop (Michigan and Lake). Being near Metra/CTA is very important. I'd also like to live somewhere where driving isn't a huge pain in the ass (like driving downtown is), on the odd occasion I have to drive somewhere. Being near the lake would be very nice, but isn't necessary. I'd like to live somewhere relatively quiet, but close to restaurants and things to do (besides going to bars all the time).
  12. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 11:53 PM) LAMO. Dude, I heard that the other day for the first time in yeeeears. Alma, how soon do you need a place? I own a big 3bed-2bath condo in Tri Taylor that will be available on 6/1. $1,300, your own parking space in the back of the unit, you pay all utilities. Within the next month or two, I'd think. At most, 6 months from now. How do you like the Tri-Taylor area?
  13. I'm looking to move in with my girlfriend sometime soon, depending on when she can sublease her current place. We're definitely sticking in the city, likely in the mid-1000s range for price, and would like a 2+ bedroom with space enough for an office or two, central air, and some sort of parking arrangement that doesn't have me driving around, looking for a spot for 20 minutes. Any suggestions? Does anyone here own or know someone who owns some nice property they're looking to rent? I've been looking mostly at Ukrainian Village and Andersonville, and am also considering St. Ben's, Roscoe Village, Tri-Taylor, and Bridgeport. Any suggestions on the safety/value of those locations? Any other areas I should check out? Thanks!
  14. Wait until the second-gen Android phones come along. HTC has much better phones than this, and Google is known for decent "beta" releases, then adding tons of functionality later.
  15. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 07:59 PM) After not even competing in this game, it's a two game series. Scott Baker 6 STRONG as expected and will probably go through this lineup easily for 2 more innings, saving the Twins BP. Expect more of the same NO MATTER WHO they throw out there tomorrow. Now, who believes the Whitesox can split a two game series in the dome WHEN THE GAMES COUNT? I don't. Season over. Do you have anything new, or just "waa waa season's over even though we'll still have a 1.5 game lead with 5-6 to go"?
  16. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 08:28 PM) I'm not sure the Twins will win out the rest of the year, but I can easily see them sweeping the Sox. This team has a history of choking to the Twins down the stretch. I really doubt we'll be swept. This has been a bad game, but it's not over yet. If we get Baker out of there by the 6th we have a shot.
  17. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Sep 23, 2008 -> 07:26 PM) Do you really see this team winning ONE game this series? My whole adult life this team has NEVER been able to beat the Twins in a pennant race. In 2005 the Twins weren't in it... This season is no different. Buckle up boys because we're going to need to win our last 4 games of the year including the makeup game just to make it to a 1 game playoff as we will be trailing by a 1/2 game after Thursday night....Twins will go 5-0 to finish this season after the easy W tonight which we've already given them You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Seriously. Just stop.
  18. Yeah, I'm sure this 10 year old kid cares about first amendment rights. I'm sure he even knows what they are. I love when parents use their children as outlets for wacko ideas.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) I think you over estimate the capabilities of the average user. It might be Unix under the hood, but when it comes down to it these are users under the controls, not sysadmins. They are not thinking security and safety when they browse the internet. True, but I don't see how an antivirus program is going to address this problem, either. It's just another line of defense that has questionable validity, in my mind.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 22, 2008 -> 01:36 AM) Not to pick on you, but how exactly does having a Mac change the need for anti-virus. And better yet, how does the addition of a windows based hosts on your network raise or change the threat level for your Mac system. Apple being on an Intel architecture and becoming more popular makes it a more appealing target. The view, and it not just you, that the mac is not a target for malware is wide spread. Making it a very attractive target. Linux has malware, hell just take a road down malware and virus history and you see the first worms on the Internet were based on exploits in sendmail on Unix systems. If its plugged into the internet or a network and especially if you have a browser or other applications on it you are at risk. My point in mentioning Windows hosts wasn't that they raise the malware threat level for a Mac, it's that a non-Windows system can often relay Windows malware to machines, especially on a LAN where security is generally more lax. I also don't disagree that Macs *are* targeted for attack a lot more now than a couple years ago, due to the rising popularity of the OS. That being said, there's still a minuscule amount of malware for non-Windows machines. I just don't see the need for an unwieldy, slow, sometimes invasive antivirus system on a *nix machine, when intelligent usage, a properly configured firewall, Firefox browser extensions (primarily Noscript), and userspace management tools such as jailcell and SELinux can stop or limit threats before they're even on your system. Granted most users won't know about the last thing I mentioned, but the first three are as easy to find and configure as any antivirus software.

I don't really think you need an antivirus program for your Mac, since it's Unix-based. No real virus problems to worry about there -- unless you have Windows machines on your network, in which case I'd just recommend running antivirus programs on those. Some things I would recommend: Open Office 3.0 for Mac -- unless you absolutely require MS Office for some reason, there's no justification for spending the money on it. Open Office is more than good enough. Note that it's currently in release candidate phase, not full release. This really doesn't mean much, though, since by RC time most applications are without any major bugs. Leopard's built-in firewall Otherwise, just use this. Try them all out; see what you like and/or need. I suggested the native Open Office port instead of Neo Office, since Neo requires X11, and Open is native. Other recommendations: - Camino - Adium - Quicksilver - The Unarchiver - Transmission - VLC - Seashore
  22. Wikipedia on Mitochondrial Diseases Any sort of disease that affects the "generators" of your cells = bad. Baldelli probably doesn't have much baseball left in him, unfortunately.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 16, 2008 -> 08:38 AM) In all seriousness what are his options? He can't bring in Jenks in the 7th, and Thornton is the only other psuedo-dependable guy out there. I have said it before, and I will say it again. If none of these guys step up, we aren't winning anything anyway. He HAS to try to find SOMEONE for the 6th and 7th innings. If no one emerges, this team is either going to lose out to the Twins or get beat in the first round anyway. You're right, but some people don't care about that. They need a scapegoat, and Ozzie's convenient.
  24. Been playing Final Fantasy IV and Trauma Center on DS a lot. Also trying to download the Warhammer Online open beta, but the queue is just insane on FilePlanet, and it's the only place I've seen to get it. Plus the file is like 9 gigs.
