  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 04:24 PM) Nah, instead of being the next coming of Christ, he'd be the next Adam Dunn because he strikes out too much. And they would demand he gets traded for a closer.
  2. Choo 9, Andrus 6, Rios dh, Beltre 5, Carp 3, Adduci 7, Martin 8, Chirinos 2, Odor 4
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) USCF is playing as a pitcher's park this season. I think bottom 3rd for HR. He's given up a ton of homers, but the team has lost 3 games he came in for a save, which is right in line with the 4 the Sox lost each season Reed was their closer. The White Sox have lost 6 games they have led in the 9th inning this year. That's just wrong. Reed blew 8 saves in 2013 and the Sox lost 7 of those games. May 5 - Sox lead 5-3, Reed gives up 2-run double to Billy Butler, Sox lose in 10 June 11 - Sox lead 5-4, Reed gives up a HR to Bautista, Sox lose in 10 June 28- Sox lead 8-5, Reed gives up 4 runs including the dagger Swisher HR, Sox lose 9-8 July 31 - Sox score 2 in the 9th to go up 5-3, Reed gives up 2 sac flies, Sox lose in 10 September 7 - Gillaspie breaks a 2-2 tie in the 10th, Reed gives up 3 hits, Sox lose 4-3 September 21 - Sox lead 6-5, Reed walks 4 guys and allows Detroit to tie the game, Sox lose in 12 September 24 - Tank and De Aza hit solo homers in the 9th to give Sox a comeback 4-3 lead, Reed gives up a 2 run bomb to Giambi
  4. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 01:33 PM) Fractured clavicle. Ugh, and so it begins.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 01:24 PM) The 2005 White Sox won the WS losing their 3rd closer. And check on the Red Sox, Bailey, Hanrahan, blow out and they win the WS. I don't know why Jones was the #1 closer. Lindstrom won the job and was 6 for 9 before he went down. If Addison Reed does that, he's horrible. Matt Lindstrom turns out to be the glue that held the bullpen together. He wasn't very good. I have mentioned, I like Nate Jones, but the truth is, the next save he gets will be the first of his career. Hahn weakened the bullpen by trading Reed for what is turning into essential nothing. Exactly. How many saves did Bobby Jenks have going into the 2005 season? If multiple WS winners were able to go though multiple closers, why would you hold onto Addison Reed if you could get a young, talented hitter?
  6. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 01:06 PM) Supposedly that Dalton contract only has 17 million guaranteed. Not much risk there for the Bengals. Nice move by the Bengals then.
  7. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 12:59 PM) Uh oh. Hopefully nothing major. He really looks like he has a shot at being a pretty good slot receiver. Sounds like he landed on his right shoulder and that's what he was holding coming off the field.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 12:25 PM) It wouldn't have solved all the woes, but if you take history into account, it alone makes the team at least 2 or 3 games better. The DBacks have lost 3 games when leading in the 9th. The White Sox the 2 years Reed was closing, lost 4 each season. They have lost 6 so far. Right there they are contending. Asking someone exactly what they would do is a set up because I don't know what was available as far as trades. All I'm saying is he picked the wrong guys and shouldn't have traded Addison Reed. Reed was very underappreciated, and like Alexei Ramirez, who seems to be a popular guy to want to trade, is a guy who is going to cost a lot more to replace than he cost. I seem to have missed hearing about the Dbacks #1 closer option getting injured after one appearance. Then I also missed the part where their #2 closer option got injured a month later. I also missed when that happened to the 2012 & 2013 White Sox. I guess Addison Reed deserves credit for staying healthy which Jones & Lindstrom couldn't do. Is that Hahn's fault?
  9. Baez getting called up tomorrow. So it begins...
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 11:27 AM) What is a positive trait is converting your saves. Lindstrom was 6 for 9 when he went down. That's not a percentage that keeps your team in wild card contention. 2 of those 3 blown saves he gave up zero earned runs. He was pitching better before his freak injury, I'd bet his save percentage would be higher than 66%. Reed just had a nice two week stretch of 3 saves in 6 opportunities. He would have lost his job if his team wasn't worse than the White Sox and in need of justification for such a dumb trade.
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) Yes. I understand injuries can set you back, but it's Nate Jones and Matt Lindstrom. I will say, since he's been injured, Matt Lindstrom has become a lot better pitcher without even throwing a pitch than he was when he went down. It's not like Addison Reed is any better than Jones and Lindstrom. He's given up more career homers than Lindstrom in less than half as many innings. That's not a positive trait for a closer.
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 10:32 AM) You don't pay guys $3 million to not pitch in high leverage situations. The problem is there are so many pitchers on the team this board says do not belong in high leverage situations, which means there are one or two guys who do, and they cannot pitch in each of those situations. The bullpen is horrible. It's a bunch of scrap heap pick ups that didn't work out, and it is costing the White Sox at least a shot of trying to win the wildcard. I would bet everything I own, Rick Hahn doesn't use lack of luck as an excuse with some of these guys and bring them back next season. When the top 3 relievers in your preseason depth chart are not on the active roster, that's gonna happen.
  13. No specific contract details yet, but the Bengals just gave Andy Dalton a whole lot of money. Another typical QB quandary in the NFL. You aren't sure if he's good enough to win it all, but you are too worried about replacing him to let him go.
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) ...and here are the others: Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming I call BS on that one. People in Florida are crazy.
  15. Rick Hahn had a plan for the bullpen and that's what needs to be looked at: Closer - Faced 4 batters then got seriously injured. Twice. RH Set-up man - Was moved into the closer role, struggled early than settled down, then was also seriously injured, has pitched a total of 19 innings LH Set-up man - Veteran FA signing who had his worst season in 10 years, then was released There's not much Hahn could have done about the injuries, but I guess you can blame him for Downs, as a bad FA signing usually goes against the GM, but I don't think anyone expected him to be that bad. That's the thing people have to remember though, guys like Belisario & Petricka weren't even expected to pitch the 8th inning, let alone the 9th.
  16. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 07:04 PM) Good call. Forgot where he came from. I was around, but was a young 19yo pup in 07, does anyone remember what it was like in the 07 season?? Just looking at that bullpen, god god almighty.....Were people calling for Ozzies head back then? That was when KW decided to just sign as many flame throwers as he can, if he could throw 95+ MPH, he was sitting in the Sox bullpen.
  17. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 08:29 PM) How do you suggest fixing the bullpen? Taking another chance on guys like Belly and Downs? Do I have a simple fix? No. But Andrew Miller is gonna get a hefty contract, and bullpen guys can be so fickle, I hate to spend that much salary on a guy. Scott Downs was one of the most reliable lefty relievers in all of baseball the last 10 years, so the Sox gave him $4 million and now he's in Kansas City. I bet you can find a guy for less than half the price that will be just as reliable.
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 07:52 PM) I agree with you. I keep reading how below average Reed has been, but they have lost 3 games in his save situations. The Sox have already lost 6 games leading in the 9th. That is 3 games right there. Plus, everyone talks about Lindstrom and Jones being out made everyone else worse. Wouldn't that mean not replacing Reed made everyone else worse? Try not to take it too personally. It is just stubborn people who got too excited about some decent numbers put up in Reno and they don't want to admit they were wrong. Hahn made some great moves in the offseason. The Reed trade wasn't one of them. Even if Matt Davidson never plays a single game for the White Sox, that still can't be considered a bad trade. As a rebuilding team that is not contending, you can get a top 100 prospect for a mediocre closer? You make that trade every single time.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 01:40 PM) Just don't overbid on Miller just because...well, chasing performance in short relievers (see Kelly Downs or Jim Johnson) is just like buying last year's 130% returning mutual fund on a high, only to see it lose 30% the year you buy in. This x 100. I will not be happy if they pay up for Andrew Miller.
  20. QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 3, 2014 -> 07:40 PM) 4-5 days ago I made a simple, one sentence, non-combative statement saying that Sox trading Addison Reed didn't help the bullpen, or if he were still here it would be better, or something like that, and I was promptly villified by 3-4 posters, 2 of whom are mods, basically insinuating that I don't know what I'm talking about, calling me a troll and that our bullpen is fine without him, even telling us what the Sox bullpen ERA is vs Reed's ERA, etc. etc. as if his 26 saves are irrelevant to the discussion, or words to that effect. The fact is the Sox bullpen imploded this weekend, and Reed had a scoreless inning today with 3 K's, not that that makes any difference. I still say Reed would have helped this team this year. A lot. Given that the Sox #1 & #2 closer options have pitched a total of 19 innings this season, I imagine Reed would probably be on the DL now too given our luck.
  21. I can hear the Cleveland fans booing from here
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 2, 2014 -> 03:35 PM) Whoa. ESPN Stats & Info ‏@ESPNStatsInfo 12m P.K. Subban's new deal will pay him $72M over 8 seasons - tied for third among defensemen in total value, trailing Shea Weber and Ryan Suter Duncan Keith's $5.5 million cap hit is quite the value.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 2, 2014 -> 08:50 AM) Baez and Russell would be very highly thought of around here if they were White Sox prospects. After a slow start, Baez has jacked his numbers up in AAA. Until they get called up to the majors and strike out once. Then it's "Trade that bum!".
  24. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 1, 2014 -> 11:23 PM) Is Paul George really in need of everyone's prayers? He got a bad injury, apparently some people get squeamish to look at it, but he's going to be okay. He's not dead. It's dubious to say his career is really threatened by this. He'll be back and pretty much the same guy. He's gonna miss out on his chance to make millions. Oh wait...
  25. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 1, 2014 -> 07:03 PM) Wonder if Cubs said the A's had to take him if they wanted JS That trade started and ended with Samardzija. Oakland is trying to win the World Series, not build depth. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 1, 2014 -> 10:12 PM) Jorge Soler having a monster year. If he stays healthy, he might end up being a top 20 prospect. Are they hang another Baseball America top 20 banner at Wrigley?
