Trade Whispers - Starting Pitchers
I’d be ok with moving Heuer, but I struggle with what team would take him back as an important piece of a trade. The Reds potentially?

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
Good point.

Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
So why do any of these pitchers expect below market extensions if the offers are so bad? ?

Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
If we wants to maximize his earnings, then he won’t sign an extension. If he wants to lock in some guaranteed money because of the risk of injury then he’ll take less than market. That’s how these things work. I’m sure no-one would say Nola’s deal was bad if he ended up getting and missing time.

Lucas Giolito isn’t a free agent.

This is not true.

Based on what?

Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
Why are you using a 3B as comp for a SP? That is not how these things work. Pitchers are naturally far more risky and that’s factored into the price of an extension, hence why the Nola deal plus some markup makes the most sense.

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
Isn’t 40 inning jumps the status quo? I won’t pretend to understand how COVID will impact things, but if it impacts Cease it will likely impact most pitchers to some extent. A deep bullpen plus having extra starters in Kopech, Lopez, and Stiever will be critical.

Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
In what world does a pitcher get paid market rates for signing an extension three years prior to free agency?
-
Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
You don’t get market value when you sign an extension three years prior to free agency. And as I showed you before, the best comp is Nola’s 5/$61M extension. Lucas getting 5/$75M would represent a 23% increase. It’s incredibly unlikely he’d get more than $75M over five years.

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
And they will be adding another decent starter.

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
I would wager large sums of money that the Sox are still trying to extend Giolito & Lynn after this move. If it weren’t for COVID, I’d expect the Sox to be closer to $160M next year rather than the rumored $135M to $140M.

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
Why wouldn’t Cease? Just cause the shortened season?

Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
That’s too rich. I think he ultimately agrees to something around 5/$75M.

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
I didn’t think club options counted as guaranteed years. Technically I think it should be an $18M AAV, but this contract is basically unprecedented so who the fuck knows.
-
Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
Depends on how you view the 4th year, but realistically this is 4 year deal with an AAV of $13.5M. But it is the biggest contract given out this offseason which shows pathetic things have been moving.

I like the way you think Pal!

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
I don’t think they will sign a DH only guy, it will be someone with some defensive versatility.
-
Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
You talking about Kopech?
-
Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
Our playoff bullpen should be nasty as fuck, especially if you assume Kopech gets moved there come October: CL: Hendriks SU: Bummer* SU: Kopech SU: Crochet* MR: Marshall MR: Heuer MR: Fry* MR: Foster MR: Lopez/Burdi/Johnson

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
Need a left-handed bat too, but those two and maybe a backup catcher is all we need.

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
Portillo’s I believe mentioned 3/$39M.
-
Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
So is this the largest free agent contract of the offseason? I thought I saw that mentioned somewhere.

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
Just wasn’t sure why they structured it this way and my post was before they mentioned the deferred element of the buyout.
