  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 25, 2012 -> 09:42 PM) My point is it helps the Sox if Detroit wins it all. First of all, it should be the Sox playing the Giants. The fact Detroit breezed through the playoffs proves that could have been the Sox had the team not choked/ran out of gas/whatever. The second reason is Detroit will be complacent and lazy if they finally win it all. If they lose, they'll be pumped up to get back to the playoffs again. I mean our division is really s***ty. If they fall short, all they have to do is win a lousy division and try again. If they win it all, they'll maybe loaf and not care as much and Sox will be in better position. Sometimes I wonder if the stuff you post is your real opinion or if you just throw this crap out to see everyone get riled up.
  2. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 25, 2012 -> 04:37 PM) I learned C++ through my data structures class. That class taught me more about programming than the class I learned C and assembly in. I took 1 assembler class because it was required. I'd never touched it prior and have yet to touch it since. In my experience the only people that know and use it are nearing retirement ages. The 2 companies I've worked converted 99% of their assembler programs a long time ago. The C++ class I took was full of guys that had been in IT for years. So the professor kinda flew by a number of things and I had trouble keeping up. Most of what I've learned and use everyday I got from the first programming class I took, which was COBOL.
  3. I tried learning C++ once. Except the class was actually "Advanced C++" because I had taken a class for C many years prior. It didn't go well. I've been doing mainframe programming for almost 15 years now and OOP is just different enough that I haven't been able to pick it up yet. I am taking a free online course learning Python and it's going well so far. I'm hoping that if I can get at least one down, learning more won't be so bad. Openings for mainframe programmers are few and far between.
  4. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 25, 2012 -> 04:06 PM) I wouldn't reject you just because you like Ozzie Guillen. But based on the logic in your arguments regarding Ozzie Guillen, I probably wouldn't hire you. I have a kind of picture in my head of what Greg is like in real life. I know a couple of people IRL that sort of remind me of the way he defends certain topics and asks questions. On the other hand, I could be completely off base.
  5. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 25, 2012 -> 03:48 PM) 140,000 open IT jobs, only 40,000 graduating engineers. IT is such a wide field though. I can code in 4 or 5 different programming languages and I'm at least familiar with half a dozen more but I could go on a job search site and still find 1,000s of jobs that I'm not qualified for simply because there are still plenty of programming languages I don't know anything about.
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 24, 2012 -> 03:51 PM) I can't speak for the other cities, but in the case of Wrigley, I'd say it has the exact same thing or more so. They get a TON of tourists and super-casual fans, that only go on rare occasion. That kinda proves my point. Assuming a ticket base of around 25,000, the Cubs are getting over 10,000 non STH to show up 81 times a year. For some reason Greg thinks this is something that doesn't happen anymore. I can't imagine you can get those kind of numbers just from people that only come to the games once or twice a year.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 24, 2012 -> 04:23 PM) Cause he signed a four-year deal. Getting rid of a guy after one year is kind of brash. Now if they blamed it on the Castro thing, I guess that's fine to axe him after one. Considering his body of work the last couple of years, they probably made the right decision. Nothing he has said or done has indicated that it was going to get any better in the next 3 years.
  8. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 24, 2012 -> 04:09 PM) Excellent post. I do disagree that he cussed OUT his coworkers. He cussed around them a lot. He did call out his boss and got canned for it. So if you agree with that post, why do you think Ozzie deserved another year? If anything, the Marlins are saving him from himself. I imagine he's going to have a tough time finding another managerial job as it is. If he were to have 2 more years like the one he just had, he wouldn't be able to land a job managing the Bad News Bears.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 24, 2012 -> 02:48 PM) No questions about parking, but I like the Great America comparison. Baseball to families is a once a summer outing in many instances. Makes sense. It used to be something you did all the time. Those days are over in all cities. Except for places like Wrigley, Detroit, New York, Boston, St. Louis, L.A., San Fran...
  10. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 24, 2012 -> 02:41 PM) Mark did great. Bell let the fans down by reporting fat and lousy. Reyes was fine. Ozzie deserved more than one year. I don't know what kind of job you do but next year I think you should seriously under-perform your expectations, cuss out your co-workers, declare that you don't do all that much besides sleep and play on your ipad and at the end of the year call out your boss on what a horrible job he is doing. Then report back with the results.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 24, 2012 -> 02:40 PM) Miami should be ashamed of itself giving him one year and ruining his career. One fricking year?? All because of Loria's ego. Loria got called out by an underling. Grow up, Loria. He does get the last laugh ruining Ozzie's career, but Ozzie gets a laugh too. If he invests that money properly he's set for life and so are his kids. Ruining his career? Seriously?
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 24, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) "Big" veteran is right. I wish the Royals would hire him. You are right though. The Miami Marlins ended the career of a WS winning manager probably. Amazing. Dombroski might hire him, though, if he likes him. Or maybe Hahn. It will take a guy with a White Sox background.Think of the resume about to go to waste because of Loria. It's unbelievable how you keep trying to pin the blame on the ownership for this. Ozzie has nobody to blame but himself. Think of all the great current and past managers in MLB and see how many of them acted the way Ozzie did/does. I'm betting you won't be able to find any.
  13. I can only imagine that this is a reference to how long it takes to get to the ballpark and then back home after the game. For someone like me that lives 2+ hours away, that's exactly how I look at it. Sox games were always a once or twice a summer thing. I just always thought I was in the minority because I very rarely hear anyone else use that as an excuse. I'm completely shocked to hear Brooks say that this was the #1 reason people didn't come to the games.
  14. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 22, 2012 -> 05:00 PM) It was a throw away post That's why you posted 2 more times defending it? If you're going to make a bad post, at least stand behind it. Don't come back 3 days later basically saying you didn't really mean it. And then continue defending it.
  15. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 03:51 PM) The White Sox were the 8th best team in the league and failed to make the postseason. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 03:27 PM) Thank you captain obvious.
  16. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 03:30 PM) Tell your partners in crime that. There's a party going on in here for being the 8th best team in the AL. I haven't seen anyone celebrating. Got any links? You're the only person here that thinks their placement against the other 13 teams in the American league matters at all. Until they get rid of the divisions and just start sending the top 4 teams to the playoffs in each league, it doesn't matter.
  17. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 03:09 PM) The other side of that is, if you don't make the postseason, it's no achievement to finish 10th (or 8th.) Thank you captain obvious.
  18. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 02:48 PM) No asterisk, however unlike you I don't think it's good strategy to strive to be the 7th best team in the league going forward. They should strive to be the best team in their division because that's all that really matters. Who really cares if they are the first best team or the 10th best team in the AL?
  19. It's a badly worded award. He should have won the most improved player award. Comeback should mean he was good 2 years ago, bad last year and back to or above career norms this year. Rodney hasn't been what you could consider "good" since 2005.
  20. QUOTE (champs2005 @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 02:00 PM) We can argue all we want, but rest assured that Brooks Boyer and the Sox brain trust now will NOT assume that more people will show up if the Sox win. That's just ignorant. We had nearly 30,000 for that make-up game against Detroit on 9/17. Then they proceeded to go on a 1-5 road trip. I'd bet my house that if they went 5-1 and came back home with more than a 1 game lead they would've hit 30,000 a few more times. Had they won the division they would have certainly passed the attendance total of 2011. But they didn't. Finishing the season in 2nd place with 85 wins ≠ winning.
  21. QUOTE (champs2005 @ Oct 19, 2012 -> 12:28 PM) Another big conclusion was no one said they werent going to the games because they didnt think the team was any good or werent winning. So much for that commonly-posted theory that if Sox win then fans will come. We've been over this but here's the cliff notes version: Expectations for the team were low at the beginning of the season thus the season ticket base was low. "Winning" means post-season appearances, not jut spending a few months in first place and crashing at the end of the season. It will take a few years of consistent winning to really build the season ticket base up and thus the attendance numbers. It's not going to happen overnight or even within a few months.
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 17, 2012 -> 05:01 PM) There are also several successful people on here in alot of different arenas. There is good advice on this board in many different facets of life. One area that isn't really covered is female perspective because as far as I know, we have very few that post here.
  23. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 17, 2012 -> 05:35 PM) So, tomorrow I have a phone interview for a job at Walt Disney World So which character will you be dressed up as?
  24. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Oct 18, 2012 -> 10:51 AM) I think Kenny "officially" moving upstairs will help, as there were plenty of people I spoke with this year that wanted him gone more than Guillen. I think fans will see a "change" in style under Hahn, and my get excited. Has this been made official yet? Everything I read still refers to KW as the GM and Hahn as the asst GM.
