QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 08:00 PM) Wow. Was certain that was fair. Second angle shows it's foul. Or not.

QUOTE (Baron @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 07:20 PM) They cant decide on s*** even with replay. Hard to blame them when you have a split here despite the several replays. I think the roll in the glove was enough to call him safe.

Think he's safe

Getting the runner over won't matter when Jose goes yard here

Danks only 86-88. Spring Training reports had him at 90-91 without reaching back. Hmm.

Was it just me or did Rios catch it from the bounce off the facade and make some sort of signal indicating like he'd caught it on the fly?

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 11:01 PM) Like what I've seen so far at the plate. He's another statue in the field, however. When the Sox become contenders again, this lousy defense thing is going to hurt us big time in big games. But as far as Jose the hitter. BOOM! I like what I've seen despite that 1-for-25 or whatever it was. Really? He looked awkward stretching for a few balls early but seems to have corrected it. He also misplayed one ball hit pretty much straight at him, and got a silly interference call on a rundown. But I think he's showed some pretty nice range for a big man. That deflection he made tonight on Leonys Martin's single in the top of the 3rd was one not many first baseman would have even got a glove on I reckon. He's made some really nice plays on balls hit hard either side of him. Maybe a little less reliable with the scoops than PK right now but a big upgrade in range I think.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 10:53 PM) Abreu will be fine, I think people are going to like his total overall numbers at years end as he is named AL ROY. I think they definitely would if that happened, because Tanaka looks awesome

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 09:46 PM) The key is that the power is as good as advertised. The rest of his game should improve with time. He could hit some huge ones too. One tonight seemed to come off towards the end of the bat and still comfortably made it out.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 10:16 PM) Son, that was a serious White Sox winner. Play of the game was when Gillaspie and Flowers collided on the pop-up, and Tyler wanted to kick Conor's ass. You could just sense the tension. I hope he kicked his ass after the game. I'd be wary of fighting Gillaspie, not that he'd fight back at the time, but you'd wake up one night and he'd just be sitting motionless on a chair next to your bed, stroking a knife

Thought we could do with a place to discuss Abreu's performance and progression. His two fairly long cold streaks this season have been mildly concerning, but both contained some fairly hard-hit outs, and after tonight he's hitting 33% better than league average. His at-bats can be incredibly schizophrenic, at times he has swung at absolute muck out of the zone and at others has demonstrated an excellent eye. He seems to be struggling a little bit with changeups, but given his quick improvement on his first-base technique, I wouldn't be too worried about him adapting. I've been pleasantly surprised by his range. Got to be excited about what he can do power-wise when the Cell warms up.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 09:05 PM) Definitely. He should (and I think does) feel pretty lucky after today. I hope he doesn't take it too hard, but works with Coop a bunch on control and repeatability. Seems like his release point is all over the place, to my amateur eyes. I suspect (or maybe hope) it's a case of trusting his stuff a bit less with the velo drop. He had a couple of very wild pitches but apart from that most of his balls seemed to me to be a result of nibbling, fearing that hitting the zone with his reduced stuff would lead to a pounding. Hopefully he can tick back up again and put some more MPH difference between his fastball and his off-speed pitches and start trusting his stuff more again.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 09:59 PM) You and your damn advanced stats lol Hey, baseball allows me to get that nerdy side of me out, I'd get lynched if I brought up statistics in relation to Manchester United

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 09:56 PM) Not a super encouraging start by EJ, but he's young and this is often what you get with young pitchers. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that run was unearned because of Flowers' throwing error, not Johnson's wild pitch. I'm pretty sure the run is still earned if someone scores on a wild pitch. Yeah, that's right. Briefly flicked away and missed the throwing error. Still, the run scored due to the wild pitch, so not a blameless unearned run for Johnson.

Just looking at his advanced fielding stats, they have him killing it at SS and 3B, but pretty damn bad at 2B. Any theories on this or is it solely sample size?

Return of The Axe, you know that he is back

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 08:01 PM) One hit, two runs (one earned) AT Texas? Lucky or not, that's an awesome result in that ballpark. Way to go EJ, he's done well since his rocky start. He walked 5, and only 1 run was earned because of his own wild pitch. The end result was good but he did not pitch well. Still, the rest of the season he's pitched better than his end results, so we'll take it. Hopefully he's scuffling a little bit because of his drop in velo and it comes back and he looks like 2013 MiLB Erik Johnson. I would say it's fairly encouraging he can put up a 3.49 FIP after losing 2-3 mph.

K/9 of 2.0 on the season, very concerning.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 09:00 PM) "Ugh we only got an ace and not the GOAT pitcher. What a waste." No I mean obviously it was the right pick and that but listening back, the hype was huge, across the board. I'll bet if you said at the time that by 2014 his career ERA would be 3.10 and his best year would be "just" a 4 WAR year, 99.9% of people would have taken the under. He's been excellent, but people thought he'd be historic. Of course the TJ probably didn't help.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 08:42 PM) He hasn't been inconsistent in the slightest degree. I am not sure why everyone thinks that. He's had four starts this year and has a 6 ERA with a 3.22 FIP and a league leading 14.1 K/9. He has been an ace when he's on the mound every single year. I think it's more disappointment compared to they hype coming from being the best college pitcher of all-time. I'm working through old Baseball Prospectus podcasts, in 2010 right now and they're talking about him as a slam-dunk to basically instantly be the best pitcher in the game, and one of the greatest of all-time.
