Which is why it’s hard to argue how much free cash flow the team is actually generating.

What are the terms in years and interest rates for all those loans?

One would imagine an ownership group is going to be more likely to prioritize paying down debt...it’s exactly what the Padres are doing, but that’s eating into 10% of their potential spending (including stadium improvements and renovations the Sox don’t have to worry about.)

What is the net positive of adding another $300 million contract to Harper?   How much more can they earn with him...but what happens if he joins the list of bad contracts at the exact time you’re trying to extend your contention window and “fix” the starting rotation and bullpen?

For one thing, it guarantees that you won’t be able to keep Baez AND Bryant, if that was ever a realistic possibility in the first place...not to mention Contreras and Rizzo, along with Hendricks and Quintana.

Signing Harper would force Heyward into CF, and/or a trade of Almora/Happ.  That doesn’t make much sense either.

And it would cause Boras to lose one of his biggest bidders for another of his clients in Bryant, which isn’t ideal.

  2. Awesome post kiwi! Ive talked to a lot of aussies on line and even drank beer with a few bands from Oz. Also spoke with a few from NZ ( one being a cousin originally from Ireland) and two things I can say is they are 1) mostly happy people with good hearts and 2) sarcastic as all hell. I mean seeiously sarcastic. Its hilarious. But you already know this. ;)

Alright Manny. Its 3am and I have a cold Modelo in my hand but you havent signed yet. What gives dude?!?!

I think projecting someone like Madrigal can be very tricky. There are recent examples of shorter players like Mookie, Altuve, Albies, Jose Ramirez etc significantly exceeding their power projections in part because their contact ability is so special. I'm not saying it's *likely*, but I also don't think it's outside the realm of possibilities in a few years Madrigal is actually hitting for more power than Moncada.

I just dont see it with Madrigal. I have no doubt he will add some power but not enough to overtake Yoan. I mean no disrepect to Madrigal but there's no comparing him to Moncada. Ill take Yoan with his power speed and eye over Madrigal's hit tool anytime.

When I think of Madrigal's potential it makes me happy. When I think of Yoan's potential I sport a Louisville slugger in my jeans.

They are 180 degrees of different players. Complete opposite.

Lol you aren't kidding. As much as I like Madrigal his tools are nowhere near what Moncada has. There's still five tool potential in Moncada. He showed flashes of it last season.

You can make the same point for the White Sox.  No one really knows their pain point.  The rumor out there from team reporters is $300 at absolute tops, but our offers don't appear to have approached anywhere near there as the highest one out there is $250.

Good point. To me the difference is that the Sox were in on these guys from day one. The Sox had an idea of what it would take to get involved and are still in the mix.  The Padres jumped in because they thought they thought they could get an all star player on blue light special.

Trying to look at this objectively based on rumors and quotes from both teams, I do feel the Sox are willing to go higher than SD.

SD is the perv that purposely shows up late to the party looking to score a drunk chick.

One thing that could really destroy things for the Sox is a 3rd team involved at a serious level.

If I remember right when the Padres tossed their hat into the mix they had said they jumped in because the bidding was low and they would remain serious as long as the bidding was reasonable. Something to that effect.

What makes the Padres so confusing is nobody in the media knows how much is too much before the Padres bow out. I'm thinking they jumped in because of the rumored 175M but they might back out if this get into the mid-upper 200's. Ha ha, or so I hope.

She follows the marvel universe obviously, unless she is just really into Norse mythology.

Both of us love the Norse mythology but she is really into the marvel universe. I have her to thank for getting me into the marvel movies because I had not seen any until she took me to see Thor.

Why put any info out at all.. all it does it get people pissing and moaning if it doesn’t happen right away. I wouldn’t say a word if I had connections.

Reading too much into this because it's the soxtalk  way.. I would say you have sources and have kept quiet. Well done dude! 😛

That’s right. If you cannot share it, then don’t imply you know something. If your source doesn’t want anyone else to know then don’t say a peep. That includes eyeballs, and other hints you know something is up.

Yep better off keeping it hushed until the news actually breaks. Too many Eric Forman secret squirrels lurking around the interwebs these days.

For those who know other systems better - if the Dodgers wanted to beat an offer involving India, would there be any way for them to do it without Verdugo?

I'll go with dirtysox 's suggestion of Ruiz.

If you ranked him against India which one would be considered a better get for the Marlins?

Hope you don't mind me throwing in my two cents.

IMHO, for the Marlins to pass on a 20 year old catcher with his tools that raked at AA would be insane. Nothing against Verdugo, would love to have him but Ruiz is easily the bigger prize. Then again the Marlins did draft Kolek...

Well no, but it ticks me off when people boast about having inside information only to go off the grid when someone asks what they know. To me, there's no point of someone sharing that they know something if they aren't willing to elaborate at all.

Agree 100%. I understand people can't always share what they know since they run the risk of losing their source. But to come in here like they know something but can't say is attention whoring and nothing more. Not pointing the finger at anyone in particular, just that we've seen this before in the past.

Other than no-name randos on social media, has anyone seen anything that says White Sox don’t have the highest offer?  Or that another team has even made an official offer...that may or may not exceed that of the Sox?

There is a fine line of “not getting bent over” and “showing genuine interest”. The Sox have done a good job of showing that they are legitimately interested and will do what it takes to land Manny.  They have also set the line in the sand that they won’t just acquiesce to egregious demands that the perceived Manny market was “supposed to be.”

If it comes out later that some other team got Manny at say 8/250 and Sox wouldn’t pony up that 8th year, go after Hahn and the FO.  Until then, people are indicting based on unsubstantiated claims and imperfect information.

    Well said sir, great post!

The Sox are at the table. We should all be thrilled. Actually signing means nothing.

That said, I don't know how people conclude anything from these quotes. Hahn is actually complementing the fan base for not acting like a psycho took out their entire family if Manny goes elsewhere. I doubt anything has changed regarding his status since Thursday or Friday when it was assumed he would be a Soxfest surprise.

Besides, everyone said Levine was full of crap when he mentioned the Sox offer. If SD suddenly enters the fray, doesn't it mean an 8 year $250 million offer really isn't on the table and Levine was probably correct? If they were willing to go there, why wouldn't they have been in since the beginning?

Those are some big baby blues. This means the Sox are signing both Machado and Harper, right?
