Why would he catch often? I mean, I have no problem with Grandal getting early rest DHing a lot when Vaughn isn't up (assuming he starts in minors) and the position is more open but I don't want to lose Abreu, Vaughn, or Grandal's bat "often."

Yeah he probably makes sense on a team like Pittsburgh or some rebuilding team where he can play every day with a good veteran back up to learn from.

Whatever the cost (couple mill maybe), save it to use on a pitcher mid-season if needed.

I think the point he is trying to make is if you use the excuse that they want to see him get minor league at bats for a couple weeks (just enough to get to that cutoff), you suddenly don't have that argument with the AAA season being delayed.

Yep. Just toss at least a 7-year deal and buy out the 4 arb years he would have waiting until mid-April.

I feel like that shouldn't effect guys currently in the MLB though. Guys called up prior to any changes in the CBA and service time should be grandfathered in under old rules in my opinion.
