I recently dumped DirecTV. We're now running a Vue + Netflix/Hulu combo. So far I'm happy with the switch. Vue is WAY cheaper than DirecTV, but I still get basically every channel I actually would have cared about.

 

While it runs great on my PS4, it's not as great on a Roku. The menu/navigation sucks and the system occasionally has to be reactivated for some reason.

Also, how is the DVR function? The hardest part in the switch is going to tell my daughter she's losing her movies/shows that we've DVR'd over the years and we are starting fresh. I also read that the Vue DVR only stores for 28 days and then deletes?

Vue works on up to 5 devices at once.

 

The Vue "DVR" isn't really a DVR since you're not actually saving anything to a box. I haven't used it much, but it's more like keeping track of an On Demand show for you for a month.

I switched my parents over to Sling TV about a month or so ago. They have the blue package and then the news channels as well as one of the movie packages (sundance/TMC/etc). It ends up being about $35/mo for that plus about $70 for their broadband package, for a total of $105 or so.

 

Saves about $65/mo over their previous setup with the cable company and they still get 95% of the channels they watch.

 

Other than some initial technical hiccups (and my parents are nearing 70 and REALLY not tech savvy), the transition has been pretty uneventful.

 

If it weren't for this darn baby development channel that my 15 month old is mesmerized by, I would probably seriously consider making the move myself.

On Sling at least, it is the real channel. But it is still delayed.

Vue advertises it has ESPN (nothing about WatchESPN). I never tested it against ESPN.com or any live-updating app to see if there's a delay though.

With Vue, you can use it as a provider for a lot of the actual network apps and use them instead of the Vue app. I tried Vue on my Roku and i hated the interface.

I will probably end up getting Sling, since I can Chromecast it. I don't think Vue has that option yet.

For about the last 4-5 weeks I have been using Vue by getting free trials every week with a new account (can't believe they haven't stopped this yet). And I like it. Sometimes the sports channels aren't a smooth stream but still good (not sure why that happens), I usually restart the app and it works better. The DVR kind of sucks but it does the job if you just want to record shows and watch them within 28 days but I heard recording sports is really hard to do. I haven't tried Sling TV at all because I am satisfied with what Vue has been doing.

Fixed it for ya.

I switched to Vue last week and am running it through the PS3. The guide lags quite a bit, and there's the occasional buffering/random time when the system resets itself, but overall I've been happy with it. I get all the ESPNs and BTN as well which is huge. Best advantage over cable is that I'm not paying to rent a box, and no contract, so I should save a ton of money on the switch.

 

Edit: It is the actual ESPN on Vue, not the Watch ESPN app.
