2017 Independents Thread

Ask and ye shall receive

I feel like views are getting so extreme these days, on both sides of the political spectrum, and that's why I'd have trouble identifying as a supporter of either of the two major parties. We shouldn't have a two party system to begin with, but that's a separate issue.

I feel like I'm a Republican but facts suggest strongly I'm an independent. I never vote for the Republican presidential candidate. I despise Brownback and all he stands for. I loved Bernie and he's a socialist. I despise a lot of democrat candidates for president. I love Ventura.

So I guess I am an Independent.

A majority of people are actually independent. Yeah they feel forced to pick a side but I have voted for just as many Republicans as I have Democrats. This thread creation is good for business.

I've always considered myself an independent. I've worked for both Republicans and Democrats. However, between our current Governor and current President, I'm finding it harder and harder to identify with most aspects of the Republican party. Living in the south Chicago suburbs, there's not a lot to choose from on the Republican side locally. So if you look at my voting record, I have probably voted 95% D in the last few elections and I don't anticipate that changing anytime soon.

Not on this board. This place is Democrat haven, not heaven. We've got some real party poopers on here. I never knew it til Trump won. They assumed Hillary had it but boy they showed their real colors once the Democrats blew their layup in the last presidential election.

I'd argue it's close down the middle, edge towards Republicans.

That tide turned about six years ago on this board. Before that there was a much more active Republican slant to the board. Especially the daytime crowd.

No way. Current version of the board is heavily left-leaning. As Tex said it wasn't that way before, but it sure is now.

Apple CEO Tim Cook: Russia-bought ads are only "0.1% of the issue." Bigger deal is social media being used to divide

I agree. The purchased ads are much less of an issue than people being just plain gullible and spreading B.S. themselves on social media.

Of course he's going to blame the other tech giants. He's the CEO of Apple, his company isn't a social media company, so blaming social media takes Apple off the hook entirely.

Well right, but if people are always going to be gullible and prone to spreading BS, then we should regulate the ads that get placed on those platforms. The purchased ads were spread virally BY those people, and ended up being shown to half the electorate. That's much bigger than .1% of the problem or whatever he said.

To only a very limited point, and that won't really solve the issue.

The real solution is properly supporting education, stopping the editing of history books to make people feel better, and teaching kids and teenagers skills for modern world effectiveness. Hell, I'm all for a class where they simply have to learn how all the main logical fallacies work.

Regulation can help a bit here, but mostly, you need a public better educated on not just history and political science (though those help), but on how to critically evaluate information presented to them. In the information age, this is absolutely key.
