September 29, 200322 yr Beside the obvious ones of fire Manuel, re-sign Colon, a really important thing the Sox organization needs to address is getting new advanced scouts, or whoevers in charge of that kind of stuff, videotapes whatever, because the Sox CAN NOT keep getting dominated by people they've never seen. I don't know for sure, but I bet no other team in the Bigs got beaten more times by a call-up, or rookie than the Sox have the last 2 years. It's f***ing pathetic and has to be addressed for 2004.
September 29, 200322 yr ABSOLUTELY! That has been a VERY disturbing trend against the Sox for a few years now. Some scouts need to be hired, or fired, or whatever the case may be. It's an embarrassment to be run over by unknowns only to see them get shelled by other teams.

You're right, and I think their major league scouting is pathetic. They keep trading for major leaguers who can't play. Todd Richie, Billy Koch, David Wells, Royce Clayton are the most grievous examples. Now I know Everett, Robbie and Colon are contrary examples, but those other guys were flat out bustouts. Wasn't it someone's job to look at these guys????

Rex can correct me if I'm wrong considering he knows about the minor league, but that responsibility should fall on the White Sox' advance scouts. Whoever they are..... and I agree with you Cali..... they're s*** and this problem now for 2 years needs to be addressed. These guys are to scouting unknowns what Nardi was to pitching.
September 29, 200322 yr Author It actually wasn't as bad this year as it was in 2002 this year, but this year they faced more guys it seemed like than 2002. In 2002 it seemed like the same guy they never faced could dominated them 2 or 3 starts in a row. This year they seemed to get to the guy the second time around, but there is no excuse for the Sox to not hit them everytime. You won't find any Yankee, A's, Red Sox fans who are scared s***less when their team gets to face a call-up...

Bingo, this is a problem with either the advanced scouts, or a problem with the team listening to the advanced scouts. And the thing is with some of the players we have, we might have good scouts, but they are being ignored...

Bingo, this is a problem with either the advanced scouts, or a problem with the team listening to the advanced scouts. And the thing is with some of the players we have, we might have good scouts, but they are being ignored... Th at's my thought exactly. I have no idea what scouting reports come in, but those reports have to be communicated to the players and the players have to take them seriously and adjust accordingly. That said, there is no way that every Minor League pitcher can be seen and have a legitimate scouting report done before he makes the Majors. There just aren't enough scouts to do that, especially if it happens before the draft, when they are concentrating on amateur players. Even if the scouts have seen a guy once, that may not be totally indicitave of how he will pitch the next. He may have added a pitch since he was last seen. Obviously this differs somewhat for a guy that has been in the Majors for a half-season, but just has not yet faced the Sox. They should have better reports on those guys. As far as Minor League guys, I do know that scouts are rarely seen at parks until after the draft in June. Hell, one example of s***ty scouting....... Enemencio Pacheco pitched twice in Birmingham after the Carl Everett deal was made and to my knowledge no Texas Rangers scout was in attendance. They finally caught up with him in his 3rd start. In missing his 1st start after the trade, they missed a guy throwing a three-hitter through 7 IP throwing 95 mph and just dominating.
September 29, 200322 yr Interesting thought. I think it also comes down to confidence on both sides. Pitchers ahve to know we suck the first time we see someone so they get pumped a little bit more and vice cersa.
September 30, 200322 yr Somes teams are cutting the advanced scout. Read an article in BA a while back on this. Saying they could do just as good of a job watching it from tv. They said the only thing they really missed was the outfield alignment and such. I think the Cards, Rockies and Padres were some of the teams that dropped them. I do agree things need to be changed, but Rex and others brought up a good point in regards to the players having to listen to them.
September 30, 200322 yr Great point. We do seem to flame against guys we've never seen before. The Sox have done this for a long, long time, tho. It's part of our hex.
