October 2, 20178 yr Can someone with Fangraphs subscription do me a quick favor? I had a bet with a buddy on Byron Buxton's fWAR being under 3.5. The website only publishes the number to the 1st decimal, at least to non-subscribers, and guess what...it landed right at 3.5. I did the actual math and came up wit 3.482, but I'd like to confirm with Fangraphs (seems I should be able to get it taken out one decimal place..it is definitely rounded on the website). Do they publish the numbers past the 10th decimal for subscribers? Any other idea on how I could confirm? Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Edited October 2, 20178 yr by ChiSox59
October 2, 20178 yr Wow, I'm not sure what's crazier, that he finished with 3.5 (after his 1st half) or if it really will come down to the rounding on your bet!

Haha yah! Pretty wild it came down to this. I looked pretty safe 4-6 weeks ago. Especially safe in May! But Buxton is a real nice player. Definitely excited for this bet to be over....the daily updates from my friends got exhausting (I live in MN). But, I am a numbers guys, and pretty confident I did the equations correct. But of course he wants further evidence, so I am trying to oblige.

If you did the calculation, isn't that the proof your friend is requiring?
October 2, 20178 yr Author QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) If you did the calculation, isn't that the proof your friend is requiring? Yah, but he wants it from fangraphs. I don't necessarily blame him, we have some decent coin on the bet. He says that the numbers I am using to calculate it are also rounded, so it could change. Potentially true, but probably not enough to get it over 3.5. Basically we're just trying to find the number out two or three decimal places from fangraphs. Not sure if possible or not.

Basically we're just trying to find the number out two or three decimal places from fangraphs. Not sure if possible or not. The simple way to deal with that is to calculate all the inputs. Then there can be no dispute. That said, if the original calculation was 3.482, all of the rounding error would need to be in his favor to get to 3.500. Edited October 2, 20178 yr by Dam8610
October 2, 20178 yr I'm a subscriber but I don't see WAR past the first decimal. And I assume your bet was just based on fWAR? Because Buxton's rWAR is 5.1.

October 2, 20178 yr Wow that's a tough one! I mean technically it is under 3.5 but nobody goes beyond 1 decimal point. So who wins? You both have a case. Maybe it's a wash and you double the bet next year. What a bet. This blows my mind on many levels.

Definitely won't be re-doing this bet next year. The daily updates I got from my friends and Buxton inched closer to 3.5 made it quite painful. Plus, the dude is really good. If he didn't start 2-50 or whatever, he would have been handily over 3.5. I'll take my winnings and move on. We do a Sox-Twins heads up win bet every year though that will continue. Not much suspense there this season.
October 3, 20178 yr Ah i thought he had 3.5 and above so going to any decimal places more than the standard could be a technicality worth arguing. And good lord man I'm not suggesting another Buxtob at 3.5 bet. Sweet Moses. You and your buddy had the definition of a sweet ass bet. Nice job punking that Twinky
