May 11, 20187 yr Nationals center fielder Adam Eaton underwent arthroscopic surgery on his injured left ankle today, reports Jack Magruder of FanRag Sports (Twitter link). Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post had reported yesterday that Eaton was visiting a specialist in Wisconsin, and that evaluation revealed a “cartilage problem” that necessitated the operation, per Magruder. Eaton remains in a walking boot, and there is not presently a timetable for his return, per Magruder. Looks like we sold high. Still has 3/28 left but since the trade the Nationals have gotten 133 PA out of him.

"We had images three different times, two MRIs and a bone scan throughout this process, and there was nothing seen," Rizzo said. "But because each and every time he got out of the immobilized boot, there was consistent pain." He said that the operation discovered "an unstable chondral flap, which is a little cartilage flap, so a little tear, but it was a flap. But on the images, the cartilage was always flat. But when he was in the process of doing things, running and moving, the flap would get stuck into the lateral gutter of the ankle. It would cause inflammation and pain. How does that even happen? This is a big deal. This is the cartilage that covers the bone. He will have exposed bone in the joint. That flap of cartilage wont cause inflammation any longer but that exposed area will get sore and eventually expand. He will be a case for a joint resurfacing or a total joint replacement later in life. This issue is essentially traumatic arthritis that most people get in the knee.

I kinda feel for Eaton even though I think he's kinda a jagoff. Based on what ptatc wrote it seems probable that he played on a lot of sprained ankles over the years. As a guy that short and driven he probably had a chip on his shoulder his entire career and played through countless small injuries when he perhaps shouldn't have. But, he's set for life and the Sox made a helluva trade on paper so far. I think if Gio and Eaton both end being nothing burgers for their new clubs Lopez and Dunning will give the Sox about 15-25 WAR over the next 5-7 seasons. Edited May 12, 20187 yr by chitownsportsfan

May 13, 20187 yr Author Will that injury affect his ability to play CF longterm? Because if it does and he become a LF/1B/DH then all that surplus value evaporates. Anyways I hope the best for the kid but I'm glad we didn't hold onto him any longer then we did. Hard to see us getting much for him right now. Should also be a cautionary tale for other veterans like Abreu/Garcia if they aren't part of a longterm plans and we receive a good offer we should move them. Edited May 13, 20187 yr by wrathofhahn

It shouldnt effect him too much while hes young. He will have some soreness and swelling but it should be manageable, depending on fhe size of the defect. He will start to have issues earlier than most people with arthritis type issues though.
