June 30, 20187 yr Davidson looked VERY sharp on the mound today. He looks like he may have what it takes to an a relief pitcher. The breaking balls were filth. Do the sox use him as a 1b/3b/dh/relief pitcher? The guy would be super valuable if he could pull that off

I had the exact same idea of making a thread mentioning Otani and Davidson but thought it more as a fun thing rather than serious. The hitters had no idea what to expect from Matt . No advance scouting. but according to him he loves pitching.
June 30, 20187 yr I've always been somewhat surprised that aren't more guys that play the field/pitch. If you can throw 90+ I'd at least throw some MiLB bullpen innings to see what happens. The roster flexibility of having an extra bullpen arm (even mediocre) would be fairly valuable.
June 30, 20187 yr Author Matthei O'Davidson will be an inning burner in blowouts from here on out. Book it. Valuable roll to have honestly.

It's just not practical, when you boil it down. Look what happened with Ohtani. Guy hurts himself pitching and now you lose a bat in the middle of your lineup as well. The Angels have been on a downward spiral just about since. It's a good way to cripple a team. The Angels lost their cleanup hitter and ace of the staff (at least, it was shaping up that way) SIMULTANEOUSLY. It would probably work more often visa/versa as well. The grind of playing a position on 3 or so days in between starts every five -- You're still playing over 100 games as a positional player and then you tack on the starts. Yikes. Good way to wear down and regress at both pitching and hitting. Good way to take a guy who is great at one thing, "good" at another and just make him average all around (if not injured).

It probably doesn't make sense for a guy like Oh tani, but Matt D is a fringe big leaguer. He should be perusing every avenue in bringing value to a team. One roster spot it worth a mediocre bat and arm.

June 30, 20187 yr I wouldn't try Davidson out as a two way player but I'm not against letting him pitch from time to time in mop up work to save an arm in the pen. Like last night.
