There is wayyyy too much b****ing on this board over Alonso and McCann being acquired. $2.5 million is cheap and Alonso cost almost nothing. They are all in on Harper and Machado and if they don’t get them, there is probably a plan B. People really need to let things play out and see what happens. Seriously.

Alonso has been horrible and Jay hasn’t even suited up yet.  It has pretty much been $13 million wasted because the recruiting effort failed.  $13 million dollars isn’t nothing.  No one is complaining about McCann’s $2.5 million.

I'm happy with this because it rules out Grandal.  He is going to get paid a lot and cost a draft pick.  I don't really buy into him.  This also may show that the Sox have some level of faith in Zaval

This thread is as SoxTalk as it gets. Everyone freaking out about a backup catcher who is nothing but a one year placeholder. Chill.

The real story here, is that McCann has worn number 34, that must be what Kopech meant on with his cryptic messages earlier in the offseason.

It is nothing one none of it is long term money. They didn’t give Machado the extra 50 million because Jerry wouldn’t commit that to one guy not because they signed Alonso and Jay

The Sox payroll is around $92 million for this year.  $13 million is 14% of the total payroll.  When you have a low payroll to begin with, you can’t afford to burn 14% of your payroll on bums.

Who can’t afford it?

The Sox can’t afford to waste 14% of their payroll if they want to actually be good.  $13 million could be a good starting pitcher or outfielder instead of two bad bench players.

The Sox can certainly afford it.

Sure, but they refuse to spend with the big boys so millions of their payroll can't just be thrown away.
