That is interesting.  And begs a certain question.

No one seems to understand the postseason eligibility list this year, myself included, so I'm going to go ahead and guess this is very precautionary if we had an injury to Abreu or something.

This would be my guess as well.  With CoVID considerations, we probably had to submit something like a 40 man roster, that covered all of the possible players in the playoffs will be, and then we would pick the 28 man roster from this list, and 99% for sure that Vaughn won't be on it.

You are probably right.  As much as I want to read into it, this is probably just precautionary.

Yup. Obviously. We make it to ALCS or WS and Abreu/Encarnacion get hurt... Here comes Vaughn.

Has anyone ever made their major league debut in the postseason?

Hahn clarified eligibility last week during his press conference, and struck down some misconceptions including the Sept 15 active roster deadline date bantered about here and elsewhere. The rules regarding the expanded playoffs, including taxi squads, the elimination of the bogus extra inning rule for playoff games, and other aspects can be found here:

https://www.mlb.com/cardinals/news/mlb-announces-expanded-playoffs-for-2020

The roster rules can be found here: http://m.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/postseason-roster-rules-eligibility

Hahn indicated the White Sox playoff roster will be submitted to the league on the date it is due to allow maximum flexibility among the 40 players eligible.
