Korey Lee Called Up

I think the plan is to have this guy as the starting catcher next year, and until Quero is ready.  Might as well see what he's got now, and identify things to work with him on before next year.  Or if he's absolutely terrible, at least they find out now and can start targeting other catchers to bring in for next year.

Pair him with a veteran like Hedges for next year. Or keep grabbing former top prospects and pair him with Mejia.

    .574 OPS at Charlotte with a 40% K rate. He's ready.

  • But, keep in mind, he can hit .130 from BOTH sides.

  • I have not seen that.  I think he is young, inexperienced calling games, the arm is just average (unlike Lee’s cannon), but he has a pretty quick release, I think he’s been decent at blocking balls an

Hedges is being paid $5 million this year and literally has a .454 OPS. This is a great example of why I say the White Sox should pair Lee with Seby Zavala next year, he's just as bad as Hedges, but he's also much cheaper!

I was going more for the defensive stand point.

I don't have access to their BP numbers, but both DRS and Fangraphs/UZR find them both to be positive defensive catchers. Hedges is a little more positive this year, but Seby was just as good last year. This isn't an upgrade worth any money.

This - The sox problem isn't that we have bad catchers, everyone has bad catchers. The Sox problem is we have given a mammoth amount of at bats and penciled guys into spots who are not good and given them LOTS and LOTS of at bats.  In particular - the amount of AB's we have given and how they designed the lineup with Sheets/2B is horrendous.

Gavin Sheets

2B

We also have had guys we thought would be good who got a lot of at bats and/or hurt - doesn't matter who have not been good:

Tim Anderson

Yoan Moncada

Eloy Jimenez (his bat doesn't make up for his defense at this point)

Andrew Vaughn

When you add that up - that is 6 spots that are below average and I'm leaving out Benitendi cause he's been about what you would have expected.  Maybe people wanted more power/extra base hits - if he had that - he's probably on track for a 2-2.5 WAR type of season vs. a 1+ season.  Maybe I'm being harsh on Vaughn, he's okay - but he certainly isn't above average.
