So Jose is in the same company as Ripkin, ARod, and Tejada? Wow! Maybe we should pay him double!

WHITE SOX EXERCISE OPTION ON JOSE VALENTIN

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have exercised their 2004 club option for $5 million on veteran shortstop Jose Valentin.

Valentin, 34, batted .237 (119-503) with 28 home runs and 74 RBI for the White Sox in 2003, while posting a .969 fielding percentage, the second-highest of his career, at shortstop. His 28 home runs tied a career high (also in 2001).

Valentin became just the fourth shortstop in major-league history to hit at least 25 home runs in four consecutive seasons in 2003, joining Cal Ripken (1982-87), Alex Rodriguez (1998-present) and Miguel Tejada (2000-present). The switch-hitter became the 11th player in franchise history to hit at least three home runs in a game when he connected three times on July 30 at Kansas City.

In 10 full major-league seasons with Milwaukee (1992-99) and the White Sox (2000-present), Valentin has batted .246 (1,082-4,392) with 196 home runs and 652 RBI. He has a lifetime .958 fielding percentage in 1,093 games at shortstop.

It was a good move in picking up Jose for another year. Maybe we can sign him for a second year as he mentioned.

:puke

K-layton made the same comparisons for himself..... only difference is that he claimed he was upper echelon "defensively."

Thanks for mentioning the Choice again. Whenever I get all negative about our shortstop situation I just have to remember the Klayton era and JosE6 gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

$5 million for that garbage. If they can spend that, then KW better not use that spending a dollar if you only have a nickel crap. It would have been an upset if he received $2 million on the open market.

f***!! :fyou Jose, go back to Milwaukee.

f***!! :fyou Jose, go back to Milwaukee.

Yeah.. it's HIS fault the Sox paid him that much...

With the Sox picking up his option I wonder who they'll now hire to try and piss him off? ;)

f***! f***! f***! f***! AND f***!

5 f***s for 5 million dollars wasted.

That's a pretty expensive f***. :bang

i really dont understand why we signed him...he has shown us limited range and an average that always ends in the .230's...well since we got him back and we are paying him 5 million i hope he plays a lot better...

Five f***s, actually. That's only a million a f*** -- small potatoes (if you are Robert Redford). :D

But expensive if you are Hugh Grant.

Hey, maybe he'll have a career year, wait, don't you need a career before you can have a career year? Hey it could be worse (that should be the slogan for 2004)

Jose will teach the rest of the team how to have fun and get the job DONE!

I also think he made tremendeous strides hitting right-handed in the past 2 seasons. Who knows, he may hit RH exclusively in 2004.

5 mill is a bargain. Only a true leader could have taken less than his market value.

just a sad commentary on how barren our farm system is at shortstop.

nuttin at Triple A

nuttin at Double A.

nuttin at single a -- unless Gonzalez and Morse turn it on.

it's Valido or bust -- and he is 3 or 4 years away.

That's why Jose is a White Sox lifer.

I needed a good laugh what a joke of an article.

I really believe the Sox giving Jose 5 million sort of shows us that they aren't too worried about money. Sure they may try to move Koch and Konerko, but I think a signing like this says they may try to re-work Magglio's deal and lock him up long term. I really hope so.

This move shows one of two things:

1. The team will spend more money than we think.

2. Kenny Williams is truly trying to unseat Ed Lynch as the most clueless, stupid, brain-dead moron GM in baseball history.

You should be working in politics, as the Master Spin Doctor.

The press release is the second way to use Ripken, ARod and Tejada in the same sentence as Jose Valentin. The first, more common, way is to say "Boy, Jose Valentin is no Ripken, ARod or Tejada!"

It also shows that some sum dumbass GM's r gonna overpay for talent once again this off season.
