I think Balta may have made this claim…regardless, I don’t like when people use board generalizations when it was literally one dude who said something dumb. Almost all of us knew Alonso was going be capped, people just didn’t want to give up a pick for him.

No, I said that Prince Fielder was substantially better than Alonso throughout his career, was younger, and was coming off a much better season than Alonso had last year. Alonso getting comparable money even after salary inflation was silly.
Bob Sacamano
Yeah, I don't think anyone other than Scott Boras was saying he should sign for Prince money.

Here’s the problem. The guys that aren’t in the downswing of their career and/or don’t cost a draft pick are like super sought after and cost a s%*# ton of $$$ (Soto, Ohtani, etc). Realistically, the Sox are never going to sign a top 2/3 free agent in any class so we’re left trying to find relative value from the top 10 guys outside of the top few that they can’t afford (or choose not to). Guys like Alonso, Kim, and Santander fit this billing. Yes, you’re going to lose picks. Yes, they’re probably going to spend majority of the contract on the wrong side of 30 but that’s what makes them affordable to a bottom tier franchise like the Sox. In other words, beggars can’t be choosers. Edited February 6 by JUSTgottaBELIEVE
caulfield12
"Last winter, four Boras clients — Cody Bellinger, Blake Snell, Matt Chapman and Jordan Montgomery — waited deep into the offseason to sign. All four settled for short-term deals that included opt-outs. Alex Bregman, another Boras client, remains on the open market the week before pitchers and catchers are due to report. The Soto megadeal was historic, impressive and all the other descriptors you want to use, but it’s tough to grade the Alonso situation as anything but a loss for Boras." https://sports.yahoo.com/mets-win-staring-contest-with-scott-boras-bring-pete-alonso-back-on-short-term-deal-180841663.html Edited February 6 by caulfield12
