Exactly. They only mean something to someone like Drury trying to make a team. There are very few of those.

S.Wilson for example.  Clevinger for closer.

Drury and Gallo.  Narvaez might get traded or go to Charlotte.  Lee/Thaiss also could be traded.

Dalbec is history.

Shane Smith is on the team due to ST.

Shane Smith was on the team due to being a rule 5 and the team sucking this year. May as well carry a talented 25 year old pitcher.

And the fact that he's throwing harder than anyone in the entire organization other than Grant Taylor...plus, it's not a guarantee.

Aren't the majority of Rule 5 picks offered back to their MLB teams at $50,000?

Look at 2023...more than half had to be offered back to their initial organizations.

Half the teams in the MLB are usually competing for something.  The Sox are in the other half.  There is no reason they can’t easily keep Smith on the roster.  Losses will be in abundance already and the Sox have shown they have no problem playing a man short to save a few bucks.  They will do the same to retain a decent pitching talent.

Those teams weren't ulin this situation. Of course they can return hom. But in a bad team a talented pitcher will stick.

1985-86 White Sox were in a similar situation as today when they picked Bobby Bonilla in the Rule 5 draft...dead in the water.

5-14, 5.18 ERA   Shane Smith will beat that...at least.

Doesn't matter the results. They are in the situation to keep a talented pitcher on the team because they will be bad anyway. That was the point.
