Is your implication here that the Sox should've just signed him instead? You understand that isn't a draft right?

Yes, but it's also fair to look at what could have happened...he's not exactly lighting the world on fire just yet.

Anybody worthy of note has been thoroughly scouted, and they're either signed or under agreement for their age 16 year. If David Keller was walking along the beach, and stumbled upon an unknown 17 year old kid throwing rocks into the surf at 101 mph, he could certainly sign him for under $10k. He could sign hundreds of kids for under $10k and that doesn't count against the pool allotment.

If scouting were such an exact science, Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. would have signed for a lot more, and several more would have received a lot less. But I’m certainly glad you are satisfied with the White Sox international operations. The fact is, there were players available at some point, but the White Sox are always holding on to a decent size of their allotment. The strategy hasn’t work other than for JRs bloated wallet.

I'd always rather spend the $1.5 million but Aldrin Batista was a pretty good outcome there at least.

I'm sorry but you have no idea what you're talking about this time. It's just not the same this year under new leadership.

It’s hilarious how the Sox will waste millions each offseason on bum veterans nearing retirement but choose to save a measly $500K instead of trying to acquire more young talent.

I've argued this for years. It's ridiculous. I'll be expecting David Keller to spend his full allotment in 2027 and beyond.

Hope so.  I still don’t understand it.  Money is money.  Why give a 34 year old outfielder $2 million but try to save $500K on young prospects?

It’s like most restaurants that post under new management signs. Most still suck.

It's not that they're cheap though. It's just poor planning and not enough investment into the international market. Ken Williams and the previous front office liked to hold money over for late arriving Cuban players. In order to spend the entire pool, you need all of these agreements in place years in advance. There aren't just talented players sitting around waiting to sign after January 15 in most cases. Having money remaining isn't a good strategy. With a new international director though, it's difficult to blame them.
