If you'll recall, when Mourning was negotiating with Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey in the off-season, he insisted on a fully guaranteed four-year deal without granting interested teams a physical related to his kidney condition. NBA insurance policies generally start paying teams 80 percent of a player's salary after the player misses 41 games in a row because of the same injury. Yet it is almost impossible for teams to secure insurance for pre-existing medical conditions like Mourning's. Meaning the Nets would have had few options beyond paying extra (and highly expensive) premiums to secure the added insurance required to cover another kidney failure, since Mourning was suffering from focal segmental glomerulosclerosis long before signing with the Nets.

A: The circumstances here are unique, but Mourning is entitled, if he chooses, to waive the salary protection on part or all of his Nets contract. Far-fetched as it sounds, it's not inconceivable that a player in Mourning's position would volunteer not to collect the full amount, on the premise that he was physically unable to complete even one of the four seasons on the deal. If Mourning does wind up collecting the full $22 million, New Jersey will have paid him more than $1.8 million per game.

Wow it sucks to be New Jersey. That was an expensive risk, and I can't believe anyone would pay that kind of money for a guy who you couldn't recoup your losses from.

In Portland, they are saying that the Blazers should trade Bonzi Wells to New Jersey for Alonzo's contract, just for the salary cap room. That would be interesting. Throw Rasheed and K-Mart in that trade and I would do it from a Blazers perspective.

Wells has been in trouble all of the way back to HS. (Wells went to Muncie Central HS in IN and Ball St U) It doesn't surprise me that he has had as many problems as he has had. Same with Zach Randolph. I actually first met him his sophomore year at Marion HS in IN. I know knew his HS coach really well. Both of those kids got away with murder (almost literally ) back then and never had to grow up, and now it is biting them in the ass.

Zach was arrested twice in HS. The big charge was running guns for a gang IIRC (somekind of weapons charge) but they pleaded that out, and he got off pretty easy. His biggest problem is he has been told how awesome he is for so long by so many people that his work ethic has always been in question, as well as doing the right things. Sounds like not much has changed judging by him punching out a teammate last year...

I would rebuild it around Randolph. People around here are tired of Sheed, (at least the fans that count, the ones who are going, or not going, to the games) and people are really high on Randolph. He is a very good player, but hopefully he can stay in shape, because he is a little heavy as is.

The Nets are on the hook for the full amount of Zo's $22.6 mil. They were unable to have the contract insured.
