Rafael Devers traded to San Fran

Featured Replies

Devers was in the second year of a 10 year contract.

I was reading an article earlier today how Boston was going to have to trade a young OF....guess they went another way.

They aren't sending any money to SF that's why the return is ass. But that will be a fun one for their front office to explain to the fans.

This is eerily similar to them trading Betts cause they didn't want to pay him.

Devers' contract is probably gonna be terrible in about 4 years, but still. They basically got salary filler and one decent prospect back for a 4 WAR third baseman in his prime.

Devers is currently in the second year of an 11-year, $313.5 million extension he signed in 2023. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Giants will be picking up the remainder of Devers' contract. The Giants currently have baseball's best defensive third baseman in Matt Chapman, but he is injured for a few weeks, so it is possible Devers could play third base in San Francisco or just stick as a DH.

The move came shockingly close to first pitch for Sunday's game. Harrison was set to start Sunday's game, but Sean Hjelle took the mound instead at Dodger Stadium. ESPN's broadcasters said they found out around 90 minutes before first pitch. In an in-game interview from shortstop, Giants star Willy Adames said he found out around 20 minutes before the game and expressed his excitement at welcoming Devers to the Bay.

"Everybody's so excited," Adames said. "Me personally, I'm thrilled to have him on the team. Obviously, he's one of the best hitters in the game, and to have him on the team, I think he's going to help us do a lot of damage in the division. Obviously, we need a bat like him in this lineup, so now when we get Chappie back in the lineup, it's going to be exciting."    sfgate.com/sports

Well, it's going to be a battle until the end for the last WC spots in the NL and especially the AL.

This should open up more playing time for Campbell Anthony Mayer and also (temporarily) put to bed rumors of an impending Duran trade.

A 4-WAR DH in his prime.

Given Harrison's potential upside, it's not fair to completely slam the Red Sox. Devers has a big contract, but it doesn't feel out of line with some other recent deals -- such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s $500 million contract. Maybe the Red Sox will take those savings and go after some more pitching help, either at the trade deadline or in the offseason.

Still, when you're looking to trade a player because of a broken relationship, it's hard to get fair value in return -- and it feels as if the Red Sox came up short here. Maybe this will prove to be the best move for the organization in the long run, but their playoff hopes for 2025 take a hit.

Grade: C

SF got an A- trade grade...fwiw
