I am really curious WTF this actually means.  Hopefully a reporter asks a meaningful question about it before he reappears at some point in the future.

Typically this would only be granted/used for personal reasons/emergencies (non injury/baseball).

Sox should have sent Tanner McDougal to the futures game instead. That guy is on fire. He also has

the natural ability to make the jump to the Majors. Add him to your follow list.

I'd say he's a better prospect than Schultz.
