White Sox 1/8 teams not to receive revenue sharing nor pay CBT

Athletics Brewers DBacks Guardians Mariners Marlins Orioles Pirates Rays Reds Rockies Royals Tigers Twins are revenue sharing recipients (7 Central/14 total)

Blue Jays Dodgers Mets Padres Phillies Red Sox Yankees all pay CBT (7 teams)

Angels Braves Cards Cubs Giants Nationals Rangers White Sox (8) neither payor nor receipient

(Astros right around $244.8 million threshold depending on accounting methods used...)

Clubs can manipulate revenue figures by acquiring partial ownership of the broadcasters that air their games. While revenue from local TV rights is subject to sharing across the league, profits generated through ownership stakes in the broadcasting networks are not. Instead, they are treated as a subsidiary/investment earning.

Cubs White Sox Red Sox Braves Tigers Cardinals Yankees Astros Marlins

(Eg. YES Network shields $300 out of $500 million per year from CBT figures, and the Dodgers save $60 million per year just through accounting tricks with RSN deal, not even accounting for deferred contract savings)

"The point of revenue sharing is to maintain a strong, competitive sport. These teams (CLE MIL TB) have certainly done that. Others have certainly not. Bob Nutting of the Pirates has invested almost nothing into his team, despite the increased draw of Paul Skenes and a phenomenal rotation behind him that's crying out for some offensive support. The Cincinnati Reds haven't been quite so poor, but they certainly haven't done much around Elly De La Cruz. The Chicago White Sox have been a dumpster fire, while the Rockies have shown minimal interest in doing anything that will actually help them win (though they have spent money; we'll blame this one on ineptitude). Finally, the Minnesota Twins' recent culling is a poor look for the sport and their fan base.

It's hard to argue against the Brewers, Rays and Guardians receiving more funds than the Pirates or Rockies from revenue sharing. They're advancing the sport, performing well within their markets, and playing some unique brands of baseball that allow them to win on the margins. Teams with winning records could receive larger shares of revenue-sharing funds the following year, while teams who lose more than 100 games or spend less than a certain amount could be barred from receiving their full allotments the next year. Perhaps such a ploy would better incentivize small-market teams to compete with more urgency, addressing the competitive balance issue in MLB."

  • caulfield12 changed the title to White Sox 1/8 teams not to receive revenue sharing nor pay CBT

84/90 Rule

$2 million per victory reallocated from CBT, starting at 84 wins for revenue sharing teams...

Milwaukee +$28 million

Seattle +$14 million

Cleveland +$10 million

Detroit +$8 million

All teams lose $1 million for every loss (goes to competitive small markets, see four teams above) starting at 90 losses and up

Rockies -$26 million

White Sox -$13 million

Washington -$7 million

Minnesota -$3 million

Pittsburgh -$2 million

LAA -$1 million

-$8 million difference can be taken from either readjustments in local broadcasting tax valuations and/or revising upwards deferred contract values to higher present year payroll values

Notice the White Sox not even mentioned ONCE as a possibility by six different writers in connection to the top of the class free agents...and the likes of Quintana Bassitt and Keller at the bottom of the Top 40-50 aren't even realistic, either.

What's to notice? Getz has already announced how they're going to proceed during the offseason, and that's a cheap innings eater, and a couple of bullpen arms. MLBTR had one writer guess the Sox might have interest in Giolito, and one picked them for Cody Ponce.

Pence might be #100 on the GAME list.

Giolito had all the bridges back burned by JR.

Getz will be saying the same thing next offseason as well.

Bryce Harper's life basically threatened ... by MLB Deputy Commissioner after earlier threatening Manfred to get the "f$&@ out of the Phillies' clubhouse" with salary cap lecture.

Those details from ESPN were the only details on the altercation until a new report from sports agent Allan Walsh. During an appearance on “Agent Provocateur,” Walsh reported that, later, a “deputy” of Manfred’s allegedly threatened Harper.

“Don’t ever say that again to the commissioner,” Walsh said, quoting what was allegedly said to Harper. “Don’t ever disrespect him again publicly like that. That’s how people end up in a ditch.

Even some Phillies' fans are wary about trading for Tatis, Jr., moreso on the payroll side.

"The Phillies are operating at 10's of millions above their budget. Middleton doesn't mind losing money in an era where they win a WS, but he's not going to be willing to lose $100m per season. Keep in mind, every dollar the Phillies spend this year in free agency or trades is likely to be taxed at 110%. Ie, if they bring in Tatis......that's around $60m per season with the CBT tax.

The Phillies have the 4th highest payroll in baseball. They are not cheap at all.....there's just a limit."

Ofc this one seems to be more about getting rid of Castellanos and has zero chance of actually happening.

He is absolutely the best trade target out there for a team that wants a star.  The Padres haven’t won anything with him, he has had injury issues, and now a “down” season.  The Padres are rumored to be looking to cut payroll.  Name another star player that can be acquired for their age 27 to 35 seasons on a 9-year, $286 million dollar contract?

He was a 959 ops hitter before all the issues.  He has since fallen off about 100 points over the last 2-3 years.

Now he's more like an 800-825 guy with the GG defense carrying his fWAR values.

It all depends on how badly SD waunts to cut $$$ commitments.

They're still stuck with Bogaerts, an injured Darvish, Musgrove, Machado, Cronenworth...would make no sense to not also trade Machado and go into a full rebuilding phase with prospects acquired for Tatis/Machado.

Except back end of Machado deal is also about as ugly as the Bogaerts contract.

But then what do you do with Jackson Merrill in Y3?

  • 9year contract extension with the Padres
  • $135 million guaranteed
  • Average annual salary of $15 million

"If Tatis appears unlikely to return to his pre-suspension production levels, would the Padres at least explore his trade market? Like Machado and Bogaerts, Tatis can veto any deal, and it would be difficult to recoup fair value for a player of his caliber. In other words, it seems unlikely."

Unlikely, but surely more likely than the chances they trade Bogaerts or Machado. Bogaerts is past his prime and would have almost no trade value. Machado would have some value, but he is too expensive to get back anything close to what he's worth."

Cardinals are planning to "salary dump" Nolan Arenado on the market...looks like he has played his last game for StL. Also looking to dump Sonny Gray deal as well.

To Philly to replace Bohm...theoretically.

Kona

Takahashi posted, a right-hander who turns 29 on Feb. 3, was 8-9 with a 3.04 ERA this year for the Pacific League's Seibu Lions, striking out 88 and walking 41 in 148 innings. He had gone 0-11 with a 3.87 ERA in 2024 after compiling a 22-16 record in the prior two seasons.

Takahashi is 73-77 with a 3.39 ERA in 11 seasons with the Lions.

Under MLB's posting agreement with Nippon Professional Baseball, the posting fee would be 20% of the first $25 million of a major league contract, including earned bonuses and options. The percentage drops to 17.5% of the next $25 million and 15% of any amount over $50 million. There would be a supplemental fee of 15% of any earned bonuses, salary escalators and exercised options.

"Kona Takahashi put up the best two seasons of his nine-year NPB career in 2022 and 2023. These seasons vaulted him into the conversation of the next Japanese pitchers primed to move stateside. After the Seibu Lions denied his off-season request to be posted, he will assuredly be posted come the winter of 2024 if he puts up another productive season at age 27.

While Takahashi doesn’t post the strikeout numbers of other top pitchers in NPB, he prevents runs as well as nearly anyone. And in the lower run-scoring environment, he has thrived as a pitcher who challenges hitters with his offspeed and breaking pitches in the zone."

Not to be confused with younger fireball throwing Hiroto Takahashi.

Numbers have been much more pedestrian in recent years.

Think a tier above Sugano, but no sure thing for breakthrough success in the majors unless his off speed-dominant reportoire can somehow mirror the success of Imanaga in his first season with the Cubs.

Korean/KBO infielder posted as well.
