If the money is the same at least he gets to pick where he is llay8ng during the season as opposed to relying on the Sox to trade him. And if the Sox had to outbid a team to overpay him to sign for only half a season, it wouldn't be worth it.

Huh?  You think the Rockies didn’t sign Quintana with the plan to deal him at the deadline as well?  I also doubt Quintana signed with the worst team in baseball because he wanted to play in Colorado for half a season until he is inevitably traded.  Colorado simply offered him the most money, but I doubt he wouldn’t have accepted the same deal from the Sox.
