I can, because it has been. The fact that players get DFAed when there are no other teams who want to trade for them isn't "bad roster management". The fact that somebody like Wikelman Gonzalez made it all the way down to the Marlins means that more than half the league (who probably have shitty records, in part, because of a lack of credible bullpen arms) - passed on him. He got injured. He's probably overweight. He hasn't snapped back to his 2025 form after recovering. They took a flier on him and he didn't work out. Next.

I really can't understand the people who, after every single DFA of a guy who just didn't work out, kneel down on the ground, cry, and shake their fists at the sky.

I think it's a question of why keep Tyler Gilbert instead of a rookie who is a decade younger if neither one is gonna reach the MLB roster this season.

  • Hope all 4 of these guys involved ultimately have long and successful careers with this franchise.

Do you think all assets of a deal are equal?

  • I think that's harsh. He's young there's a lot of room to grow. Not comparing the 2 but I still remember that a rookie Dylan cease could not be trusted to pitch in game 3 of the playoffs. People wante

Because Gilbert, in his present state, is more of a realistic option for the big league bullpen, in an emergency, than Wikelman Gonzalez is.

At least until he leaves the Sox.

Right. Players can't be placed on our 26-man roster unless they're actually in our organization. I didn't think this needed to be spelled out so plainly, but here we are.

Urquidy, Shane Smith, Sandlin, Schultz, Schweitzer (that's a lot of S's), even Rock are arguably better options than Gilbert though none are particularly good options for this stretch run. Wikelman has a chance to actually be a good back of the bullpen guy. His pitch mix is unique and fairly devastating if he isn't walking 5 guys per 9. Maybe he'll never stop walking the world but Gilbert also struggles to throw strikes. Seems like everyone in the system does nowadays.
