    • No. If you'd considered it as long as I have you'd recognize it's at best a toss-up. At worst the inflated expectations surrounding Joy, combined with the anxiety caused by its absence, make Sadness a reasonably preferable alternative state. And as I mentioned, I recognized this long before most; surely that's a position worth defending. And the people who are all "Joy is joyful?" Insufferable. Is it even possible to experience Joy alongside such people? And where were they three years ago? Actually, where were *you* three years ago? No answers, huh, JoyBoy? Yeah, you would ask what that means. You've told me all I need to know.

    Without sadness, joy would be merely pleasant. With it, joy becomes meaningful.

    But there is a peculiar vanity in choosing sadness in advance, then congratulating oneself for having anticipated disappointment. That is not wisdom. It is simply despair wearing the spectacles of a philosopher.
