December 4, 200322 yr how does this affect the Sox chances of keeping Bartolo? If the Yankees and Red Sox are outta the mix and the Phillies have already added Milton ($9 million), who is going to pay him? Angels? Cubs? Braves? Orioles? Tokyo Giants?
December 4, 200322 yr how does this affect the Sox chances of keeping Bartolo? Has to improve the chances. Whoever signs Millwood will likely be out of the running as well, so the competition keeps whittling itself down.
December 4, 200322 yr Author Has to improve the chances. Whoever signs Millwood will likely be out of the running as well, so the competition keeps whittling itself down. I haven't even heard Millwoods name lately. Who is left in the running for him? I gotta imagine with the Phillie Milton trade, they are out. The Red Sox are now concentrating on relief help after getting Schilling. Who is left in the running? Is Anaheim interested in Millwood?
December 4, 200322 yr it helps us with colon and unloading konerko. another first baseman off the market for the dodgers to trade for.

Don't discount the new stadium they are building giving them enough reason to take a chance. I'm sure they would try to sign Millwood to a one year deal, two max.
December 4, 200322 yr This prolly means the Yanks aren't in pursuit of Brown anymore, so the Dodgers might be more willing to part with Perez. Seems like there's an abundance of high priced talent out there with very few people willing to take on the contracts....
December 4, 200322 yr i could see atlanta getting millwood back, they don't have to pay sheffield anymore. all in all the vasquez move is good for the sox. one less suitor. i would be fine with the sox offering bartolo a three year deal with a club option for a fourth year. year one 8 mil base w/ 2-3 mil in incentives year two 10 mil base w/same year three 12 mil w/same year four 14 mil w/same total guaranteed money 30 mil with incentives met could make 39 mil. the sox would probably trade him after the second year.

Atlanta wanted to cut their payroll from $94 mil to $80 IIRC. I don't think they have the money for Sheffeild and still be able to replace the pitching they are losing.

I don't think they have the money for Sheffeild and still be able to replace the pitching they are losing. i don't think atlanta has any intention of resigning sheff. that's why i said they don't have to pay him anymore. i thought that the yankees had pretty much come to terms with sheff. my guess is millwood either stays with philly or goes back to atlanta at a slight discount.
December 4, 200322 yr Great for us, now the Dodgers won't have to worry about losing two pitchers and they'll do the Kong trade (they would have if they would have traded Brown to the Yanks).
December 4, 200322 yr Baseball has resorted to this; There is no set formula for winning so let's try to drop our salary and hope for the best. Except the Yanks and Cubs. We could be really close again but we do nto spend and it is more obvious than ever. why would the Yanks go after Vazquez and not Colon. There is something fishy there. Is there an agreement with the Sox and Colon that can not be signed until someone goes? Konerko/Valentin for Perez/Izturis then resign Everett and Colon..... I hope it is something like this.
December 4, 200322 yr Great for us, now the Dodgers won't have to worry about losing two pitchers and they'll do the Kong trade (they would have if they would have traded Brown to the Yanks). I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees still traded for Brown. I don't think they are done adding to their pitching staff. If they can't retain Petitte they may still make a run at Kevin Brown.
December 4, 200322 yr Author Yankees need a 1Bman now too. Kong could go there now I hate to say it but a Weaver for Konkero trade with the Yankees picking up some cash now becomes MUCH more likely.
December 4, 200322 yr why would the Yanks go after Vazquez and not Colon. Vazquez is three years younger and is not perceived as an injury risk, and is cheaper! I hate to say it but a Weaver for Konkero trade with the Yankees picking up some cash now becomes MUCH more likely. Bite your freaking tongue!!!! Yankees need a 1Bman now too. MSF, unless Giambi's knee is still a problem, the Yanks don't need a 1B. A DH perhaps, but Giambi should be able to step right be in at 1B this year.
December 4, 200322 yr Vazquez is three years younger and is not perceived as an injury risk, and is cheaper! B How many starts has Colon missed in his career? How is he any more of an injury risk than Vazquez? The money they save on Javier over Colon will be moot as Javier is a FA after this season. They also need to replace Johnson who was cheap. I felt that Colon for the $$$ and no talent being given up is better than Vazquez.
December 4, 200322 yr Notice I said perceived injury risk. That's what happens when you are fat. People perceive you differently. You are seen as an injury waiting to happen. You are also perceived as lazy if you are fat. Whether it is true or not, perception can be as harmful as reality.
December 4, 200322 yr Geez, are the Expos some b****es or what? I could have swore that their GM said 1,000 times that he would NOT trade Javier Vasquez.....and what does he do? Trade him for some nobodys....Great.....
December 4, 200322 yr In addition to his weight, I think part of the perceived injury risk is his number of complete games and number of innings. I have also read rumors about arm trouble. The arm trouble might be garbage made up to scare the Yankees away. (nice job KW). I don't know if he is lazy or not but he could use a personal trainer and a dietician. So could I for that matter. I'd lose 50 pounds if they offered me a 3 year 36 mil offer. 103 mph screwball
December 4, 200322 yr What the hell are the Expos thinking. They could of done so much better hten this. Vazquez is one of the best young pitchers in the NL and all they get in return is Nick Johnson. Johnson is good, but he's a good position prospect, not quite the best either. This deal is absurd considering the importance of pitching. And Juan Rivera is over-rated. This just pisses me off. Minaya pisses away a valuable pitcher and gets a first baseman in return. What a joke of a move...just like the Colon deal, he could of done better then what we gave him. Well on the plus side Colon is now gonna go to the Sox or Angels, unless another team jumps in and hte Phillies have pulled their offer off the table and Millwood now has limited options. I think the Sox end up getting one of those two and Odalis Perez. And if that happens I'll be hella excited.

I hate how the Yanks just jobbed the Expos for Vasquez, but it does seem like it works in our favor. If we can just get a staff, I think we'll be fine. It really seems Ozzie will make our offensive attack more balanced. We know we'll still have the pop in the lineup, but it'll be nice to see that we can play small ball at the same time.
