I don;'t know who he is, but i read all his posts at wsi and when he first reported nomar for maggs with the arod deal about 3 weeks before it was reported we all thought he was crazy. Other then that i don;t know who he is or where he came from.

Not that I am buying into this really happening, but didn't Gammons just say somewhere a day or two ago that the Ordonez-Garciaparra trade "wasn't dead"?

In a post here on this board someone made reference to the Sox doing the trade to save money on salaries. However, in checking the USA Today 2003 salary index I see that Nomar gets $11M and Nixon $4M. Maggs is listed at $9M and we have been reading that that goes up to $14M in 2004 (?) and we know Jose was picked up at $5M. I don't know what Nomar and Nixon get in 2004, but even with no increase in salary I don't see the huge savings. Plus the WSI report is now the Sox giving up a high ranking prospect in the trade and the Bosox a mid range prospect. Seems we are getting the shaft to save a million dollars and lose Nomar next year to free agency. The Bosox had a team salary on about $92M at the start of '03 and the Sox were at $52M. Both down from the previous year.

Magglio shoots up to $14 million this year, the others are pretty much the same.Williamson is eligible for arbitration. The White Sox might save a million and have an extra player. I still can't see where this makes sense for Boston.

Only way this makes sense for Boston is if they realize they can't sign Nomar to an extension and think the A-Rod deal fallout with him will create a horrible locker room situation, also if they think they can sign Maggs to an extension

I think this deal goes down because the BoSox firmly believe they can make the Arod deal, especially if they get a very good prospect from the White Sox. I mean if Nomar is gone, then Epstein only has to worry about one thing, getting Arod. He doesn't have to worry about getting Arod and then having to deal Nomar and Jose would probably put up pretty good numbers, at least in fenway.

Your reasoning makes sense, but we already have been told and have seen with the loss of 7 free agents of our own, that Reinsdorf is not going to spend any more money. I just don't see the deal making any sense at all. Magglio is a free agent in '05 and so is Nomar correct? Why do we care about national marketability versus Chicago marketability as far as signing or not signing Maggs or Nomar? If Maggs is popular here than that's a good reason to sign him and keep him in Chicago. If we can afford Nomar we can afford Maggs. I think it just boils down to who can help the club the most everyday.

Nomar is considered a bigger star because he is in Boston. This trade is an even deal in my book. Valentin can then go Texas.

He didn't resign anybody because he couldn't. We had Konerko on books, Maggs on books, Koch on books, Valentin as well....you add those guys salaries up, and you have like $33 mill. Then you also have to factor in that Thomas will probably(and did) pick up his end of the mutual option, and he makes $6 mill this year, putting him at $39 mill. He then picked up Loaiza's option(duh), which adds another $3.5 mill, putting us at $42.5 mill. He then figures that you probably have to give Carlos $6-8 mill, so he gives him $7.5 mill a year. We are at $50 mill, and the budget he wanted in place was $58 mill. You then give Garland $2.5 mill, Buehrle $4 mill, and Show $1.5 mill, you are at your budget with like 10 players.

 

There wasn't much he could do do retain those players. We really need a trade to get rid of some salary badly.

You can forget about the "marketability" of the potential Nomar vs. Maggs deal. Nomar is not exactly a social butterfly in Boston as far as making personal appearances and the like. Now, having Mia Hamm in the stands might not hurt, though.
