southsideirish
It has been reported that Gagne lost 25-35 lbs this off season and Giambi, even though he says he lost only 4, has lost about 20 lbs this offseason. Were they one steroids? There have been speculation about both of them in the past about being on them. What do you guys think?

What do you guys think? it is very possible to have never used steroids, work very hard, move fat into muscle and change the body proportions (off the stomach, into chest, shoulders, arms, things and calves) and look all diffferent and certainly slimmer and only have lost 4 pounds. It is possible. It is what I have done the last two months, I am mad that all I have lost is 4 pounds but the three inches off the stomach and the extra bulk on the upper arms and shoulders - look way slimmer but hardly any weight changed so if I can do it, Giambi can do it

Gagne was overweight, and similar to Zambrano decided to lose some baggage in order to gain endurance. Its quite possible that he could of taken steroids for the exact reason he decided to lose weight (which is prolong endurance), but he's a closer......not exactly vital for him to pitch for an extended period of time. Loaiza21
No way Gagne took steroids. He's looked the same for as long as he's been in the majors.
Chisoxfn
Well, on the flip side Giambi has had some serious knee issues and under-went surgery. It could be that he wants to lose some weight to take the pressure off his knee, which really hindered him this past season.
southsideirish
giambi Yes gagne NO my reason for giambi is look at him my reason for gagne is look at him, and roids are no good for pitchers it makes u more injury prone to tear something. From reports last year and now this year Gagne was definately on it. It doesn't help to add mass in your legs as a pitcher? You are right it hurts if you bulk up the upper body, but it helps if you bulk up certain muscles in the lower body. The ass, legs, calves, lower back all help a pitcher get more on velocity. Add this to the fact this guy only had to produce for one or two innings at a time and it makes it very reasonable for him to take roids. Roids give you that certain burst or explosion you need. It does not help in the stamina area. Roids make anyone more injury prone, not just pitchers. However, with the propery stretching exercises it isn't as relevant. Pitchers can gain just as much as hitters can.

He didn't lose the weight in his stomach! He lost it in his chest. He used to be big time barrell chested. He lost a lot of muscle mass there. There is a significant change. How do you explain that? BTW, I highly, highly, highly doubt either one of them took steroids. Just a gut feeling I get.

There is no evidence and many other possibilities than just the fact a guy looks thinner this year that exist. As much as I am against steroids, I find it ridiculous that people are tossing around accusations like this.

You mean the whole 2 and a half years he has been here? It was tossed around before this year. Now that he has come in this much thinner it will really get going. I had a post before in a thread that Aboz said that pitchers have nothing to gain from taking steroids. I brought up Gagne's name because it was reported before that he was on them last year. This is not the first time he has been rumored of being on steroids and it isn't the first time Giambi has been rumored of being on steroids. I don't think anyone here accused them of being on roids. All I asked if anyone thought it was possible. Where are the accusations?

Well when these two guys have been brought up in the past and then come in thinner when testing starts is a little strange. Especially Giambi with his upper body so clearly less built. I think a lot of people will try to put 2 and 2 together. I have noticed that both Sammy and Bonds came in looking pretty much the same. I am sure the names will eventually leak out. Until then everyone will just be guessing. I would also like to know why, if you convert 52 out of 56 save ops two years ago and 55 out of 55 save ops last year, you would want to change anything at all that you did in the past. Unless he was doing something wrong. Obvious that extra weight wasn't doing anything to hurt his performance.

YASNY
Hey Rex! Can we still accuse Sosa of using steroids. The board wouldn't be the same without being able to do that.

I agree that testing should be much tougher. But Giambi has also had knee problems and had surgery in the offseason. So perhaps he just cut back or changed his workouts? Have we seen him without a shirt? He could be ripped, opting to lift less for bulk, and we not know it. My thought is, if a guy didn't stop working out altogether, he isn't going to just drop 25 pounds of lean muscle tissue because he got off steroids. Steroids don't build mass without the workouts to go with them. So for a guy to lost that much mass, in that short of a time, it tells me that he changed his workout regimen, or reduced it because of the surgery. I am far from a body builder, but I have been around gyms, trainers and athletes enough to see some amazing tranformations. I have seen guys go from being pretty big to losing an amazing amount of body fat in a hurry, yet still maintaining the lean muscle tissue. I have seen them get big in a hurry, just through a regimented workout and normal supplements like MetRx, for instance. My guess is that Giambi didn't lose as much lean muscle tissue as he did body fat, which gives him more of an appearace of losing "bulk". Either way, whether on steroids or not, I am tired of all the accusations. I agree the weak testing policy following no policy at all, has created it, but I still think that is a pretty big stone to throw when you don't know for sure. Pastime
I was a fat blob like Gagne for a few years, and then I had to lose weight for health reasons. I'm still not at my ideal weight, but I lost 25 lbs on that Atkins Diet in just 4 months. Maybe that's what happened to Gagne. I have never met the man, or ever talked to him, but I just don't think he would juice up. As for Sammy, now that the team is full of real star players, his ego has shrunk tremendously and he's resigned now to just being a PART of a team instead of being the focal point. Losing that huge-ass ego of his has to be worth at least 20 lbs of weight loss. :fthecubs :sosasucks :knob
Al Lopez Ghost (old)
I understand that about 7% of those tested last year tested positive for steroids. If you look at Tuesday's sports page for the New York Daily News, there are pictures of Giambi in civilian clothes. He doesn't look like a Yankee, he looks like a Backstreet Boy. And, yes, it's across his chest that looks the most dramatically smaller. I think it's a good guess that Giambi was on steroids and stopped. But he can prove the doubters wrong, just go out and hit about 40 homers, which he has averaged over the last 4 years.
