Seattle Mariners ace Freddy Garcia should be next on Yankees' blockbuster list. This time Garcia would bring a more traditional type of aid. While the Yankees are monitoring superstar outfielder Carlos Beltran and remain the favorite (again, just ahead of Boston) to sign him long-term this winter, their immediate need is for a dynamic arm. There's no evidence anyone else of Garcia's ability will become available, either. Major-league execs remain doubtful Arizona will deal Randy Johnson, or that Milwaukee will part with Ben Sheets, meaning Seattle could be sitting in the catbird's seat for sellers. Mariners GM Bill Bavasi hasn't officially started his sales job - he said he wants to wait a week or two before deciding whether to begin a selloff - but Bavasi did say of Garcia, "He might be the best pitcher in our league."

Although Horacio Ramirez is eligibile to come off the disabled list, it doesn't look he'll start Saturday night against the White Sox in Chicago. The Braves left-hander, who hasn't pitched since May 25, is still bothered by shoulder tendinitis. "A lot of the soreness and stiffness is gone, so there is progress," said the left-hander, who is scheduled to throw in the bullpen today. "But I'm not completely pain free." If Ramirez can't pitch Saturday night, the Braves' likely starter is John Thomson.

Andruw Jones is playing with a heavy heart. The center fielder's grandmother died last week in the Netherlands, and the body was flown back from Europe for a funeral Saturday on the island of Curacao. Jones considered asking for a bereavement leave, but decided to stay with the Braves for the weekend series in Chicago. Backup infielder Jesse Garcia left the team in May to attend his grandmother's funeral in Texas.

We have a better shot than the yanks IMO. We have more young, position talent in the majors/minors, and that's what Seattle is looking for. Unless the yanks plan to $$$ some dough to get him..

I actually agree with Gammons. I'm lookin at the Yankees system right now. They don't have s***.

The yanks have some good prospects. Halsey (the most ready), Navarro (their best prospect), Cano (good too) Cabrera, (the youngest in this group) Mendez (another youngster) and DeSalvo (good, but in Class A at 23) We have more to give and better all around players in our system. We have the advantage.

I don't know much about the minor leagues, but I do know that 23 in A-ball is s***ty as hell, especially if he is a good prospect for you.

Not sure why he Yankees arent moving him up with his good era, k to walk ratio etc.. but thats beside the point. We have two potential stars in Rauch and Borchard/Rowand (not a star but potential to be a solid player) and they are position players. I only see one of those for the yankees (Navarro) Time will tell, but I'm confident that Garcia is comming to the southside.

With Kevin Brown's back injury, the Yanks will really go afta Freddy Garcia now, and I think they'll get him too. It'll be a 3 way deal, with the Yanks givin up some prospects and Jose Contreas to get Garcia.

Remember the deal when they got Jeff Weaver from Detroit, with the Tigers getting Carlos Pena from the A's. I could really see sumthin like that happenin, especially if Steinbrenner pays all of Contreas' contract.

The red sox and Yanks are always thought to be the "leading" teams to get players. They always start the rumors because of all the east coast media willing to hop on a "big story". Yet both systems are bare of upper minor league talent to make in season trades. Esp. for guys like Beltran and Garcia.

 

The best these teams can hope for is getting perennial losers [like the Pirates, Milw, etc] to take lower level guys for their major leaguers. Though the Yanks will take on a guy with a big contract, [like Bret Boone].

 

My guess is Sea. is weighing all the offers and the Sox can match what other teams will offer for Garcia.

 

KC is doing the same thing with Beltran. The KC Star is saying the price for Beltran won't be as much as they expected, unless that team can try and talk with Beltran about resigning. Teams don't want to give up premium young guys for a few month rental.

I still don't see the Yanks being able to land, Garcia. Even with their deep pockets. The M's want some solid talent in return. The Yanks don't have it. Or at the very least don't have the same caliber of talent we can offer them.
