How good is Jose Valentin?

Featured Replies

I know Jose has taken his share of bashing here, and so did KW during the off season when he extended him to a $5M contract.

Guess what folks?

Yesterday, the two NL shortstops in the race for the AS start were Renteria and Adam Everett (they were separated by 6 votes as of yesterday)

How much better is Jose compared to them?

Jose beats or is as good as Everett in every category except hits but Adam has 30 more at bats.

Renteria has more hits than Jose but again he has 70 more at bats, and Jose is better or equal to Renteria in OPS, OBP, HR, RBI and SLG. The only category Renteria is better than Jose is BA.

One can argue that Jose would play int he AS game in the NL folks.

Now, even if we compare Jose to the AL candidate Derek Jeter (Nomar is not considered since he has been injured most of the year to draw enough data), Jose has 90 fewer at bats than Derek which explains 30 fewer hits, but still has the same # of runs, similar BA, similar OBP, similar HR , similar RBI but much better SLG and OPS. And this is despite batting so lower down the order in front of Sandy/Olivo as opposed to Jeter batting in front of ARod, Sheff, Giambi etc

Now Tejada is much better than Jose, granted, but Jose is doing very well this year folks. Jose should be given more respect.

Jose:

0.266 BA

0.578 SLG

0.910 OPS

0.332 OBP

Adam Everett (Houston):

70 H

0.272 BA

0.358 SLG

0.671 OPS

0.313 OBP

Edgar Renteria (St Louis)

43 R

81 H

0.289 BA

0.396 SLG

0.730 OPS

0.333 OBP

4 HR

32 RBI

Derek Jeter (NYY)

0.785 OPS

0.331 OBP

He's also cut down his errors, too!

My only other concern is his strikeouts, which seem high, but I didn't look into the data to make a comparison.

I think the strikeouts are due to the fact he stopped Switch-hitting.

But he has been hitting LHers better every day lately

Jose is second on the team in Win Shares.....for hitters.

Only Frank has more... Jose has more than Pauly, More than Maggs, More than Lee, More than Uribe.

Now Tejada is much better than Jose, granted

Now how's that?

Defensively? Please, the new beefed up Tejada has range of about three steps in either direction. Hell, he made more errors the last couple of years than Val - and that usually is Jose's weakness. Why do you think Tejada's ZoneRating is among the worst in the league? Because he sucks up everything hit in his defensive zone? I still remember him giving us a win in Baltimore with his lazy throw to 2nd.....

Baserunning? When Tejada goes from 1st to 3rd on a bunt single or scores from 3rd on a pop-up to the tarp, then we'll see.

Offensively? Jose has a better overall OPS.....OPS with Runners On.....a much better RISP.....and of course 'Close and Late'.

Tejada's obscene RBI total has more to do with opportunities than efficiency - he is hitting 3rd in the line-up, with Mora getting on base for him every other at-bat and Roberts stealing his way into scoring position.

Carlos Guillen, though is having a great year. Best SS in AL this year.

But enough about Valentin - we've had a month-long respite from Valentin threads and I rather like it that way. Can we maybe not jinx him, yeah?

He went from being a bum to being a savior in a matter of weeks.....He is neither.

Great last line by Brando.

I was about to jinx Jose by starting a thread on him saying

how hot he is and how great he is.

He is what he is ... but he's definitely one of our gamers.

I've always supported, Jose. Sure he makes you wanna break something with one of his bonehead plays in the field or his looking straight foolish at the plate at times. But if you know baseball and you look at the big picture. You realize Jose is a very valuable asset to this team.

nice to see jose getting alot of love here...great post

Doesn't matter -- these threads are auto-jinx.

Turning the DP before the ball is even in the glove....:headshake :puke

First unearned run in 2.5 months (since TB game).

Ban sox-r-us.

Brando is right. We have jinx woes regarding Jose.

Somebody blast him so he will stay hot.

At this pace, he's having a dare I say, MVP season.

He got a HR too

Jose is what Jose is. You take the good with the bad. In the long run, the good will greatly outweigh the bad and Jose will, once again, have proven to be a very valuable asset to the Sox.

Not a Jose fan.. but I respect the man so much on this team. :cheers To Jose.

f*** the stats

Jose is playing his best ball ever for us and the stats don't show that

last Sunday his fake at 2nd on Patterson who slid into second while Timo was catching a fly and doubling out Patterson at 1st was priceless -

what a fake job -

Jose has been doing stuff like that all season, best he has played for us, and that smart baseball is bound to and has already had an effect

Go StJosE6!
