I was watching the D-Backs/Dodgers game a few minutes ago and the announcers were discussing the trade. They said that the Angels, Yankees, and Boston were the most likely contenders to get him, and the Philliles, Cardinals, and somebody else (I think it was the Giants) are also possibilites. They also said that RJ said that he wants to go to the Giants the most. The Sox weren't mentioned anywhere.

 

Do we still have a chance to get him?

They still have a shot, but a pretty rare one, imo. The price just seems too steep at this point and if KW gives them Garland, I'll be insanely pissed.

I just can’t see Randy Johnson coming to the south side of Chicago. I can see him moving out of Arizona, but heading over here would be a dream.

I agree! For a few reasons. RJ is at the tail end of his career. He wants another Ring with the best proven contender around. The Yanks and Cards have shown domination more than anyone. Don't get me wrong....... I'm happy with our team, but put yourself in RJ's position. He sees us 1/2 game in first in a weak division, and sees others who have a lot more wins than us and are 7 - 9 games in front of everyone else in a tough division. If you were Johnson and was at the tail end of your career, why would he choose us, when there are a couple of real dominating teams out there that look unstopable? Plus, they are in tough divisions where it would bring out the best in RJ's competitive juices. Lets face it, we still have some weaknesses. Shoney is a huge questionmark as of late. Loaiza isn't real sharp right now. And we have a hard time winning games against the west coast, and against other ace pitchers in the league.

I agree that the Sox have virtually no shot at acquiring RJ, but I find ESPN in general a very untrustworthy source for trade rumours. As I recall they had Garcia all but traded to the Yankees before the Sox got him. I really don't remember the Sox even being mentioned as a potential destination for him. ESPN has strong ties to the Northeast and their bias shows when these rumours come up. A better source are the local web sites.

If he stays in Arizona or is traded to an NL team(other then the Cubs), it's fine by me.

Exactly...plus the Sox typically are pretty quiet about stuff. If its a bidding war, the Sox stand no chance unless they give up Garland...but I'll be really mad if that happens.

 

If they want Garland, I'd turn my attention elsewhere if I were KW and try to pick up someone like Miguel Batista or maybe take a chance on Benson if the Pirates are willing to give him up for nothing. We all know how much it kills me to even mention Benson's name.
