John Kerry and his red rider BB gun

Was Dem presidential hopeful John Kerry seen this weekend waving a gun which would have been banned if legislation he co-sponsored became law?

Kerry co-sponsored S. 1431 last year (“The Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2003) which would have banned a "semiautomatic shotgun that has a pistol grip.”

Opponents of the bill successfully argued how nearly all guns have "pistol grips," inluding millions of Browning Auto-5 shotguns produced since 1903.

Photos show Kerry's hand resting on the "pistol grip," as loosely defined in the bill. [section SEC. 2; (H) (ii) and (B)(42): "The term 'pistol grip' means a grip, a thumbhole stock, or any other characteristic that can function as a grip."]

Kerry was presented with the semiautomatic shotgun during a Labor Day stop in Racine, West Virginia.

"I thank you for the gift, but I can't take it to the debate with me," Kerry told a cheering crowd as he held up the device.

But Kerry's gun bill would also banned any "gift" transaction!

It is not clear if Kerry submitted to a waiting period and completed the required paperwork (Form 4473) or Brady background check before he claimed the gun.

Is it so unreasonable for a politician to vote to ban something even though he may enjoy their use or whatever, if he or she thinks that it is the right thing to do?

I did vote against guns...just before I got this gift and now Im voting for guns

;)

speaking of guns.. i would love to see a shooting contest between Bush and Kerry.

Who do you think would win and why?

Well.. if it was a "10 paces, turn and fire" contest...

Bush of course. Kerry would be too busy trying to deciding all the details of what to do... is it right to shoot Bush, where should I shoot him, should I wheel around and shoot at 9, what would Teresa think? etc....

Meanwhile Bush would call in the Air Force and have him drop a MOAB on Kerry.

End of dual.

i HATE guns

I think Bush would win a duel. After all, he's got the tutelage of Zell Miller (if you saw a recent ep. of Hardball, Zell actually said he wished he could challenge Chris Matthews to a duel  )

And we all know that Kerry looks like Lurch (or Ash in Army of Darkness when he comes through the Necronomicon portal and has the huge chin) but is anybody with me that Zell sorta looks like Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars?

As for guns, if guns are taken away then only criminals will have guns. People will be clamoring for them and getting them if they want to. Complete prohibition of a problem never solved anything. Education to get people not to be dumbasses with something be it drugs, guns or whatnot needs to be stressed rather than kneejerk reactions removing the problem from the country...and as we know kneejerk reactions usually fail horribly.

There's nothing wrong with guns in the hand of a trained professional for defense or sport.

Having said that, I cannot see the NRA's position that every law-abiding citizen should own a window mounted gatling gun for defense of life and/or property either.

Handguns, shotguns, and rifles should be and are a right for every law-abiding citizen to own but should only be sold to said purchaser after extensive use and safety training.

Well.. if it was a "10 paces, turn and fire" contest...

We would all win

I can tell you this afterwards Kerry would receive a Purple Heart and no one would have seen Bush.

Yeah, that's EXACTLY what the NRA says.

And that's EXACTLY what the 2nd amendment says.

Gun murders in USA 2002 = 11,127

Population of america in 2002 = 280,562,489

Just so you know japan dosen't allow guns.

Hmm, looks like without guns people tend to not die by guns

Why do we need guns, give me ONE good reason?

Because a well armed militia could protect us from hostile governments including our own. ;)

Mexico also has very strict gun laws.

There really is no intelligent reason to have guns. It's just a stupid thing many Americans and Canadians claim to have the right to have, when they certainly should not have the right to. It's very oldfashioned and backwards.

There are approximately two million defensive gun uses per year by law abiding citizens.

Not exactly sure what is meant by a defensive gun use? Like against a break-in or car theft?

So you would ban all firearms including rifles and shotguns used for hunting and recreation?

It doesn't seem fair to me to take away firearms from millions and millions of law abiding, honest, tax paying Americans because some people use them in commission of a crime.

I know it's a nice hot button issue with the Dems. I am not a gun owner but I know many and they are sane responsible citizens. The majority of gun owners enjoy shooting, whether it is target or hunting.

"Claim?"??? Ever read the Constitution? :headshake
