Can some of our very well versed sox aficianado's inform me about this player. I heard he was BA's top prospect awhile back, and never panned out.... (where have I heard that before.) He was injured most of 2004 and Cleveland relaesed him or waived him. Either way, they exposed him and we grabbed him. Cleveland has a lot of good young outfielders. With Grady Sizemore, Franklyn Gutierrez, Coco Crisp, Jody Gerut etc. it was always going to be hard for Escobar to make it with them. Here are his numbers from 2001 to 2004. 2001 - Norfolk AAA - 111G, .267, 12 HR's, 52 RBI's, 18 SB's, 35 BB's, 146 K's. 2001 - New York Mets - 18G, .200, 3 HR's, 8 RBI's, 3 BB's, 19 K's. Missed 2002 with knee injury. 2003 - Buffalo AAA - 118G, .251, 24 HR's, 78 RBI's, 8 SB's, 24 BB's, 133 K's. 2003 - Cleveland - 28G, .273, 5 HR's, 14 RBI's, 7 BB's, 33 K's. 2004 - Cleveland - 46G, .211, 1 HR, 12 RBI's, 23 BB's, 42 K's. 2004 - Buffalo AAA - 16G, .286, 4 HR's, 10 RBI's, 4 BB's, 15 K's. He began the year fighting to be the backup to Milton Bradley in center. When the mercurial Bradley was traded just before the start of the season, Crisp and Alex Escobar were set to share the position. But Escobar received the bulk of the playing time, even as he struggled in the field. The Indians moved him to right and moved Jody Gerut to center, leaving Crisp as a mere observer, much like his days at St. Bernard's. In June, the Tribe sent Escobar down to Triple-A. When he's right offensively, he generates line drives and above average power while utilizing the entire field. He also has speed, and if he puts everyting together he could be a 30-30 player. A standout CFer, he offers the best OF defense and arm in the system. Escobar struggled in AAA and the majors last season ['01] as his plate discipline deteriorated. He was befuddled by conflicting advice from a variety of Mets coaches before reverting to an open stance w/ his legs spread wide and his hands held high. While his arm is strong, it isn't always accurate" Bats: r throws: r BD: 9-6-78 Interestingly enough, Escobar is a Venezuelan. Maybe Ozzie has some sage advice for him. I hope it's a guy who hits for a bit less power but can get on base more consistently and can at least run well enough that he can regularly go from first to third on a base hit.
