I dont know if someone wrote something about this yet, but it looks like the Tigers are going to increase their payroll by 20 mil this year to about 70 million. How is it that they could increase it this much???? Why cant we even pay out that much to our players????

One big part of that is that they have the city of Detroit to themselves. They don't have to split all of the advertising revenues like Chicago does.

They are also banking profits from the AS game. Their season ticket base is, at least, more than doubling this year.

Their owner Mike Illitch I believe is willing to spend to get the team back up to .500. Of course with their being no hockey, it'll be interesting to see the attendance figures for this season, since Detroit is mainly a Hockey town. They could sign Troy Glaus or Steve Finley in the next few days possibly, they are going very hard after them both.

Well JR will need to increase the payroll to 71 million to justify we have the largest payroll in the AL Central.

I can't imagine Finley going to the Tigers. He is a West Coast guy. Unless Ilitch totally overpays for a 39 yo outfielder...he'll stay in LA or go to SD or back to AZ.

However they do it, it's good thing. The sox haven't had to increase salary, with the other AL central teams in low budget mode. Now with some pressure from Det. the sox will have to keep salaries at a good level above $70 mill]

Well I don't know if this is also a right reason. But I believe the owner of the Tigers does own the Red Wings also. Since the NHL is in a lockout, he has more money to spend on the Tigers since he doesn't need to pay the Red Wings.

They can't co-mingle the two. The finances must be kept separate. When the Bulls were a cash cow everyone used to scream at JR to use some of that $$ for the Sox and it couldn't be done.

He would have to take the $$ from the Wings budget to do so, which is not allowed. Unless I guess he chooses to take the $$ out of his personal pocket. FWIU the hockey owners still had to fund their teams in case they played this year. I would imagine that the Wings $$ is sitting in an interest bearing account waiting to be distributed. When are they supposed to decide if the players are getting their salaries or not anyway?

I don't think they're worrying about that at all, since they're going to kill the entire season and are already threatening next season too.

Finley will be signing on the West coast. That's all there is to it. His family lives in San Diego and he has gone on record saying that he wants to play close to his family. Around the trade deadline last year, he refused to go to any other team outside California. If he signs anywhere but San Diego, LA, or SF, I'll eat my hat.

I don't know anything about his personal finances. But I'd bet he's not taking his personal $$ to pay for the Tigers increase in payroll. Like I said earlier, the funds were likely planned due to the AS game.

 

And like I also said, the hockey $$ was alloted way before the lockout so it's not like he has all those players salaries at his disposal. Also, that $$ is not for his personal use. It's invested in a business. Regardless.. it doesn't matter. He can't take from one and pay for the other.

It isn't legal. Baseball teams cannot be used to fund hockey teams, and vice versa. All of the major sports have rules and by-laws against it.

I think you think that because he doesn't have to pay the hockey players he has extra $$.. is that what you're trying to say..?
